A Bird With Broken Wings Is Bound To Fall - Chapter 1
In the hallway decorated with white flowers, the sound of Giselle’s footsteps lonely resounded. She walked out of the mansion, wearing a white dress with pearls. White silk gloves gently wrapped around her hands, but to Giselle, they felt like cold handcuffs on her wrists. Red roses adorned her long, curly red hair. Even though she was alone in the empty space, she looked so beautiful that no one could compare.
Giselle’s blue eyes, clouded with tears, sparkled in the sunlight. Even that looked beautiful. Halfway through, Giselle noticed a figure standing at the end of the hallway and stopped. She then took a deep breath and opened her mouth.
“Be careful of this behaviour from now on. I’m about to be the Marquis’ wife. I don’t want to be swept away by useless rumours.”
It was fortunate that the bride was alone on her way to the wedding hall. Giselle casually warned him before taking her steps again. Michael tilted his head and caught Giselle’s profile as she passed by him. Giselle walked stiffly in front of him with her head held high, not bothering to give a glance at the man. He opened his mouth to stop her.
“Congratulations on becoming a new bride.”
Giselle bit her lower lip at his sarcasm. Having already passed him, she thought it was a relief that she didn’t show him this expression, one that seemed she was about to break into tears at any moment. Giselle, who still held her head high, quickly took a deep breath and nodded in feigned serenity.
“Thank you.”
However, she couldn’t hide the hoarseness in her voice. As Michael took steps toward her, the sound of his boots, duller than Giselle’s, echoed.
“You will enter the wedding hall today and become the beautiful new bride of the Marquis’ family.”
Without having to look back, Giselle could feel Michael standing right behind her. She could feel his breath above her head.
‘Yes, a curse.’
Giselle had every intention of taking the blame. She wasn’t afraid of being cursed at. She had said more harsh words to him and could bear this much insult. No, it wasn’t an insult, it was justified anger.
So she calmly held her breath as she waited for his next words.
“Tomorrow you will remain a widow of misfortune.”
The words that flowed from his lips were reproaches of a completely different kind than she expected. No, it was a threat.
“Michael.”
“There will be no problem if you don’t enter the ceremony hall. If you want to save that Marquis.”
“Don’t be frivolous. It’s not something that can end like that.”
Even if he killed the person that was now standing in the wedding hall, who was to become her husband, nothing would change. She had to marry today, even if the Marquis was dead.
“With threats like that, you can’t scare me.”
At her words, Michael nodded his head enough to make his black hair flutter.
“The dress suits you so well, it’s a waste to wear it like this.”
Then, go in as you please.
Michael gently pushed her back. Really, he was now acting like someone who wanted her to walk toward the end of the aisle. Giselle knew very well that what was being felt inside was the exact opposite of what was done on the outside. She opened her mouth, prepared to take a shot at him.
“Michael, we are nothing. We are just kids with nothing.”
‘Because of me, I can’t see you getting hurt.’
She let out her sigh and swallowed the words following after.
“If you’re saying that to put your gut at ease. Okay, go ahead.”
He was not feeling hurt anymore. Giselle’s meaningless, pointed words didn’t touch him very much. He reminded her of what he knew.
“As always, Giselle.”
‘Just like every day we’ve been together.’
Michael smiled bitterly and stroked the ends of her red hair that rustled at the end of her waist.
“Everything is up to you.”
His hot hand climbed up her slender waist as if to caress her, and in one breath, squeezed her shoulder tightly.
“Think carefully, then move your steps.”
At his warning, Giselle calmly snorted.
“A widow? It doesn’t matter.”
‘I’d rather be grateful.’
Giselle strode forward.
Yes, there’s no way Michael could kill the Marquis. There was no way that a commoner’s son could kill the Marquis. It was clear that the words were just said out of anger.
“Then I will be hanged for brutally murdering the Marquis.”
Michael’s calm words dragged Giselle by the ankle.
‘Are you going to die?’
That one sentence made her feel like a beast caught in a trap and unable to move. Giselle reflexively turned her head and looked at Michael for the first time. Then he burst into a small laugh at her and asked her again.
“Does it matter if my neck hangs in the square?”
“What?”
Giselle’s plump, red lips quivered. Giselle called him in amazement as she watched his black eyes, which she loved so much, curl up with laughter.
“Michael.”
As Michael took a step closer to her, Giselle had to raise her head to look up at him. Her hardened eyes and trembling mouth seemed to show her anger and resentment.
“If it’s something you have to do, even by stepping on my corpse.”
Michael whispered as if he understood enough.
“Walk right in.”
‘If you can, yes.’
Michael knew very well that she couldn’t.
“You.”
Giselle shuddered as if she had heard some absolute nonsense. The beautiful make-up on the eyes done by the maids flowed down from her blue eyes, mixing with the tears.
“Look, Giselle.”
He whispered, wiping her eyes with his thumb. The low voice broke her heart.
“You’re so bad at lying.”
‘My lovely fool.’
Michael wrinkled his brow as he watched Giselle’s cheeks stained with tears.
It hurts.
“No.”
Giselle quickly denied it, and she had to keep blinking her eyes to look up at the face of the man she loved so much. Her tears covered her eyes, and she couldn’t see his face properly.
“We should go together.”
His large hands wrapped around hers. He buried his face in her small palms and begged sadly and pitifully. Michael’s breath on her palm shook her.
“The two of us should go see the stars as we promised.”
Hearing his quivering voice, Giselle burst into sobs.
‘I want to go. Really, with all my heart. I don’t want to let go of this hand.’ But Giselle knew all too well that she couldn’t, and she closed her eyes without even pushing his hand away.
“I don’t deserve you.”
“Giselle.”
Even if he called her that, Giselle couldn’t go. Her own father, her sister… And now she was putting his life on the line, but she still couldn’t do whatever she wanted.
“Do you know why I can’t follow you?”
Even if she remembered it as a horrible year. But if he… he should go the way he wanted to, she hoped. Giselle continued her words, forcing herself to not burst into tears. But it was a futile effort, as tears raced down continuously from her eyes.
“Because I’m scared.”
‘I’m afraid to lose you.’ Giselle opened her quivering lips, looking at Michael’s face, which she couldn’t understand, and forced her stiff tongue to move.
“Did you really believe that I could live in the mountains with you? Leaving all this behind?”
Giselle wiped away the tears hanging from the tip of her chin, gesturing at what she was wearing.
“You wouldn’t know if you haven’t lived like this since you were born.”
Giselle listened to her own trembling voice and wished she looked very ugly. She wanted to look disheartened and disgustingly ugly. She wanted Michael to want to leave this place.
“I can’t live like that.”
“You said you loved me.”
He didn’t want to lose Giselle today, so he didn’t want to cry. But her words hurt him. Watching the tears trickle down Michael’s black eyes, Giselle let out a sigh. She didn’t want to see any more.
“I love you.”
Giselle closed her eyes and took a deep breath. It was easy for her to mix lies with truth.
“I love you, but not to the point of giving up on this.”
“Giselle.”
As Michael grabbed her face, Giselle quickly pushed him away. Then, she raised her voice abruptly.
“So, don’t waste your time and leave. You will live singing in the mountains without me.”
Giselle swerved around. She didn’t even see what Michael looked like because she couldn’t see him like this, she didn’t want to.
“Because there must be many women who would like that.”
When she finished speaking, she covered her mouth. Her sobs leaked out and it seemed to ruin everything. She actually wanted to beg him to follow her too. She wished she could die with him. However, she couldn’t kill Michael with such a selfish choice.
“Was that- are you serious?”
At Michael’s question, Giselle nodded her head instead of answering him and held her breath. She didn’t eat anything recently, but it looked like she was going to vomit everything up. With his demeanour calmer than he had just been, he asked her sharply again.
“Don’t think about anything else, just think about us. Is that the truth?”
“Yes.”
Michael didn’t believe her lies and swiped her face as if to judge. Because this couldn’t be true. Yes, even if it was simply a lie to push him away.
“Another woman?”
The more he thought about her words, the more fierce his eyes grew. He felt the urge to shut up Giselle, who was uttering words he would never have dared to imagine. However, Giselle knew that Michael was just one of the kind-hearted and innocent people. He caught her breath and closed his eyes tightly to avoid revealing it. It took a lot of effort and quite a long time to control that anger.
As his silence lengthened, Giselle’s face contorted. Now that she had Michael in front of her, she was ashamed of the wedding dress she was wearing to marry another man. And, what broke that suffocating silence? It was another major figure at the centre of the matter.
“We have to start the wedding. What is my bride doing with an uninvited guest?”
