A Breath Of The Wild Fanfic - Volume 1 Chapter 28 28
“Joseph how was school?” said a figure I think fondly of.
“It was good, we looked at the filtration of water in Science.” I said before a feeling of incongruity washed over me before I asked, “When was the last time we talked?”
“We TaLkEd YeStErDaY.” He said before the area surrounding me lit up into flames and burnt away.
I woke up to find my face covered in tears and snot, I looked at the blue flame and felt the comfortable warmth wash over me, wiping away any sadness I’d been feeling. I got up and went downstairs to wash my face and clean off any of my tears and snot.
I walked down the stairs and went to the water pump and wiped down any sweat that had acc.u.mulated alongside the snot and tears on my body. After that I changed out of my pyjamas and went inside to eat breakfast.
After consuming some hearty fried wild greens, I walked towards the lab section and noticed Symin.
“Good morning,” I said to a drowsy looking Symin, “So where’s Purah?”
“Oh, Joseph good morning. Purah is sleeping in today, she went to bed later than usual as we worked late. We may have gotten a bit overzealous, but she just wanted to keep working.” Symin said before sighing and saying in worry, “She seems to really want to complete this experiment.”
I nodded, sharing his sentiment, “I just hope she doesn’t get ahead of herself; she might tire herself and that would be detrimental for her health.”
“She won’t allow herself to die, she has to help Link. We only have so long.” Symin said to me, we both sighed. “But worrying won’t help her, so we just need to make sure she doesn’t pass away, she’d never forgive herself or us.”
“I’d bet a million rupees that she’ll outlive the both of us.” I said making a joke to lighten the atmosphere. It worked and soon we were joking around and I was asking questions.
“So how does the luminous stone work as a screen?” I asked taking advantage of the positive attitude to ask a question.
“Oh that, we use that power source in a way that shows the data of the rune being used by the plate,” he tried to explain, “The luminous stone reflects light really well, but it’s also really good at holding energy for lengths of time. What we do is make the energy move in waves that bounce off all the little crystals inside, while also making it receptive to touch from the outside to use the rune assigned to it. It should work but we can’t seem to get it to work properly, Purah thinks we aren’t moving the waves properly, while I think we’re using too much energy.”
As he droned on, I thought back to Earth and started pondering over what I knew about tv screens. And I voiced out my thoughts, “Are you putting in separate sources of energy? Because if you are then the energy might entwine overloading the stone’s capacity for energy, you said so yourself that the luminous stone is good at holding energy. It works similarly to light going through glass, it refracts and separates the light into separate colours from the light spectrum. The crystal probably already sucks in the ambient lighting, meaning you don’t need to use energy for both purposes. Depending on the energy source, the light should untangle into usable data.”
(AN: sorry for that block of words, I have no idea if that’s correct. I spent like 20 minutes staring at words trying to explain different types of TV’s to me.)
I looked up after rambling for several minutes to notice that Purah had walked into the room and had listened to my rambling, she said, “That would explain a lot of the issues we’ve been having. So, where’d you learn that anyway?”
“Home,” I said melancholically, “info was easier to access.” The dream from the night before flashed through my mind, a tear slid down my cheek before I closed my eyes and calmed myself down.
“Oh, well then.” She said embarrassed before continuing with a cough, “*cough* So Symin we now know what we’re doing, want to get back to work or should we comfort Joseph a bit before eating.” She joked teasingly.
When I blushed in embarrassment, Symin said with a smile, “while I’d love to help Joseph here, I think he’d get angry if we went too far.” They went to the kitchen to eat some food.
While I was recovering from my embarrassment, I walked to the library to reread the books about Kakariko village. After I recovered, I went to the kitchen to snack on an apple.
I walked towards the scientist duo and initiated a conversation, “So when was I going to Kakariko village?” I asked forgetting when I was supposed to leave.
Symin answered, “It’s been 5 days, you’re supposed to leave in 2 days, might want to start preparing for your departure.” He said while he grabbed out a slate of luminous stone and started carving the Sheikah clan symbol onto the back of the material. After he noticed the look of confusion on my face he commented, “We use the symbol to mark the creator’s clan, and we also use it as a focusing point for the runes to take effect from.”
I nodded while still confused, he laughs at my obvious effort at covering my lack of knowledge. I thought back to my planned meeting for Damien the Goron blacksmith, and I decided to manage my money.
‘I’ll need to buy supplies for the journey, I was so close last time I went to Blatchery Plain, at least I would’ve been close if I were in the game, I was still half a day away from it in real life.’ I thought to myself.
“Actually, in regard to my visit to Kakariko village, what am I actually supposed to be doing there?” I asked, it having dawned on me a few moments before hand that I still had no idea what I’d be doing there.
“I told you before, remember? We’re trying to show you off to the elders, and we need you to search the surrounding areas for the fairy fountain. I saw you looking at books about the area surrounding the Kakariko village, so you should know where to find it.” She said in a serious voice, before giggling, “I also want to brag about you, I’ve been sending Impa letters about your improvements. You see, as no one knows where you came from, and the fact that you are also the only being with runes built into your soul and body, besides the fact that you’re also human. Basically, any improvements you make are marked as an achievement of our lab, and hey, any rewards we have could improve the quality of our lab.”
“Okay then, ignoring the fact that that means that I’m pretty much your property, why would we need to show me off?” I said ignoring the fact that they said I’m glorified property.
“Oh, I didn’t say that to anger you. Though it certainly comes off as that, we still need to make sure that there aren’t any side effects of the combination of rune and body that could harm you.” She said clearly put off by my way of thinking. “Besides it’s probably safer that they think you’re our property, if they thought that you were just a servant or something, they could easily force you into a trap. Who knows how many Yiga spies that have infriltrated that could kidnap you, we certainly don’t want you to get enslaved or executed on the spot for being a danger to their plans.”
“That still kinda stings, but it’s understandable *sigh*.” I sighed, accepting her reasoning.
That night I went to sleep tired, but those feelings all faded away as I stared into the blue flame before sleeping.
