- Chapter 3 Getting Information From Small Talks Out Of Boredom
Grrr!* Cass’ stomach trembled and asked, “What number is it now?”, his voice echoed inside his own dark cell.
Outside the metal bars, a guard was standing and leaning on the wall and said indifferently, “221”
The source of light are only from the torches hanging on the wall in the hallway prison. Cass leaned on to the brick wall adjacent to the metal bars while locked in the prison. He raised his hand and looked at a piece of paper he was holding, he had to adjust it so he can see it from the light, “Waahhhh~~”, when he saw it, Cass thought he will die of boredom.
On the piece of paper, a number was written, “921”
..
“Hey, waterless boy, is there no food in here?”, Cass was lying on the ground using his hands as a pillow. His eyes were staring blankly on the ceiling which the wavy orange light barely reached. His position was relaxed.
Carl was the guard that was standing outside Cass’ cell, he furrowed his eyebrows and said with an annoyed tone, “Just wait for your call.”
“Then what number is it now?”
“.326..”
“An hour already passed, you know.”, Cass’ voice was losing its energy and was more forced than before. He couldn’t be bothered to talk but he is too bored not to talk, “What are they even doing to needed this kind of queue?”
Coincidentally or expectedly, Carl was bored too so he chose to talk, “They will be asked one question.”
“What question?”
“Are you a demon?”
“What?”, Cass was dumbfounded, “How do they know if they are telling the truth or not? Is there some kind of a magical orb that will tell if you are lying or not?”
“.”, Carl was surprised and took a peek at Cass and said, “Actually, yes.”
“Oh..”, Cass didn’t know what to say about this. He just guessed it.
“.”
Because Cass didn’t say or ask anything, there nothing that Carl would reply.
“.”
“The only problem is that; Truth Orbs are so rare that we only have one for the whole kingdom.”, the atmosphere got awkward that was forced to say something.
Cass’ eyes rolled and back, “So that’s why it takes too long but how do you even know what number is it already?”
“There is this communicator we are using.”, Carl showed his forearm and on his armor there is a number carved on it; “332”
“Huh?”, Cass slightly frowned and stared at the carving on the armor and after a few seconds, the third digit, “2”, disappeared and a new number, “3”, was written. Cass knew that he was eaten by a fantasy book and was already prepared to see some magic but he was still amazed when he saw it right in front of him, “That’s amazing”
“I know, right?”, Carl smiled, “This is the first time that I wore an item that was embedded by magic.”
‘Now that I think of it, I still have no idea how magic works here.’, Cass thought for a while and came up with a question, “What is the ratio of magic users in this kingdom? with”
“??? What kind of stupid question is that? Isn’t it always one out of a thousand people everywhere?”, Carl answered like it was a matter of fact.
Cass was careful in his question. He didn’t ask how rare are magic in this world but ask like he was curious about how many magic users are in this particular kingdom. The answer he got was perfect and Carl doesn’t have a clue that he was from another world.
“Has there been a dragon that came here before?”
“Of course not, if there were then the Holy Kingdon was already gone.”, Carl thought Cass was just joking.
Cass was trying to get information if monsters or beasts exist in this world. The book didn’t tell anything about that. However, it seemed like dragons are legends around here since Carl didn’t deny the existence of them and even treated Cass’ question as a joke.
“What is the strongest monster that came in this kingdom?”, Cass asked another vague question and was again targeted in this particular kingdom, the Holy Kingdom.
“Hmmm”, this question got Carl thinking and then answered, “There aren’t really much monsters that go here since this is the capital city of the Holy Kingdom but there is a monster that is so strong that it became tragic.”
“A tragic? What monster is this?”, Cass sensed the seriousness in Carl’s voice.
“You really don’t know? I thought that news spread out to the entire Holy Kingdom?”, Carl got confused but ignored, “Have you not heard of Princess Luli from the opposing kingdom of the Holy Kingdom, the Oliart Kingdom?”
This time, it was Cass that got confused, “What’s that got to do with the monster?”
“..”, Carll looked at him like he was looking at a caveman, “Do you know anything? You see, this princess owns that monster.”
Cass’ eyes widened, “Such a terrifying monsterwas tamed by a princess? Is there any magical items involved?”
Carl shook his head, “The unbelievable part is that the monster was personally tamed by Princess Luli.”
“So what about the tragic part?”, Cass had many doubts but chose to ignore it.
Carl clenched his fists while in a daze, thinking far back and said in a melancholic tone, “The tragic part was that we couldn’t do anything when it entered. Even the famous Giant Commander can only stand in front of it.”
Cass’ eyebrows wrinkled, ‘They couldn’t do anything? This city is big and is the capital city. There should be legions of soldier and elites but no one couldn’t do anything? Just how strong is this monster?’
“What kind of monster is it?”
“A horse… But you couldn’t compare it to any horse.”
“What does it look like?”, Cass was already imagining a massive dark horse with its blue blazing hair and tail, staring at the city with its red eyed with an intent to destroy.
“..”, Carl was silent for a moment before saying, “I actually don’t know. I wasn’t there at the moment the monster was there.”
“How did the city recovered from it?”
“.”, Carl was silent again before saying, “They went to the casino to have fun or had a vacation to relax.”
“Huh?”, Cass sat up seemingly surprised, “No, I mean how did the city recovered from the destruction the monster had done?”
Carl looked at him for a moment, “What are you saying? The monster didn’t rampage or anything. If it did then there will surely be a war between the Holy Kingdom and the Oliart Kingdom.”
“.”, Cass was stuck in a confusion, “Then what tragedy are you saying? You even sound sad like you were directly affected by it?!”, his voice raised a little.
“It was just a tragedy that they got so scared of the monster that they were traumatized. I was just sad that I didn’t see the horse, got traumatized, and got a vacation too.”, Carl frowned.
Cass shook his head and lied on the ground again. He felt like he knew what was going on, “Did they really got traumatized?”
” Maybe”, Carl sounded unsure and a bit guilty.
” ok”, Cass got silent for a while since he had enough of this horse, “Hey, isn’t this castle too big. How can you all not have a problem with directions in here?”, he naturally changed topic to get useful information this time.
“Oh, it’s because we all have a copy of a map.”, Carl took a folded paper out from his pocket and waved it, “Without this, it would really be troublesome but only those who work here and is registered can buy this.”
“Ohhh”, Cass found that pretty useful. If, if he couldn’t prove his innocence or had a problem with the Truth Orb because he’s an otherworlder or something then he would definitely need to plan an escape.
Cass was successfully getting information from this small talk. However, when he was about to continue and ask another question, he was interrupted by the sound of heavy footsteps.
When Carl heard this, he put the folded map in his pocket and stood straight. He looked nervous at something and sweated a little.
Cass didn’t know what it got into him but he knew it concerns about the person creating those heavy footsteps.
A huge figure appeared at the end of the hallway. After a few more steps, it appeared in Cass’ sight. It was another guard but much bigger and burlier than the others. But the most noticeable aspect of this man was the smug smile on his face.
Although he was bigger than Carl as he stopped and stood in front of him. He never tilted his head but only looked down on Carl.
Carl became cautious and prepared himself for something.
“Hey, Carl, you know what to do.”, the big man placed his hand in front, wanting to receive something.
Carl’s face stiffened, his eyes were tightly closed while he was biting his lips.
Cass, on the other hand, peeked through the metal bars and looked right and left, trying to find someone.
“Where’s the one who’s talking? I don’t see a girl somewhere.”, Cass asked curiously.
Carl trying to suppressed something tried harder not to let it out.
“And who is this?!”, the big man’s face gotten uglier and redder. He was getting mad over something.
Cass slowly turned his head upwards and looked at the big man, “Wait”, he furrowed his eyebrows, “You’re the one with the girly voice?”
“Pffft-! Hahahaha!!!”, Carl’s shoulders shook while he laughed, tears came out of his eyes.
When Cass realized it, he too laughed louder than Carl who was trying to suppress it.
The big man gritted his teeth. This what he hated the most; being made fun of because of his girly voice.
Pa!* without any warning, Carl was punched to the face and made him fell on his back.
Cass didn’t stop laughing, “H-hey, tell us why’d you do that?”, he laughed louder as he held his stomach.
Grrr!!* the big man looked at him with fury in his eyes.
“You got some nerves!”, the big man unintentionally shouted in a high pitch.
“Hahahaha!!”, this made Cass laughed louder. He thought that it wasn’t that bad to be transported to another world.
Even Carl who was lying on the was holding his mouth not his cheeks. His teary eyes were mainly because of laughter.
“Give me the keys!”, the big man forcefully took the keys from Carl’s belt.
Cass pinched his throat and repeated, “Give me the keys!”
They are not to blame from laughing. The big man’s voice was girly when speaking normally but when shouting; it sounded like a balloon letting out a lot of air from its inside.
The big man tried to find the key to unlock the prison and let this man taste beating.
“Wa-wait! He’s not proven to be a demon spy yet. If we did anything bad to him, we’ll get in trouble! Gurl!”, Carl’s warning wasn’t that persuasive when his smile was ear to ear while he sat up.
The big man stopped and looked at Carl angrier, “Grrr!!”, it sounded like a kitten was angry, “Stop calling m– my name is Burl!!!”, Gurl kicked Carl in the stomach and threw the keys back to him and forcefully took Carl’s money bag.
For a second, Cass’ smile faded and his eyes squinted, staring at Gurl.
