A Frontline Soldier Awakened as a Gamer In The War! - Chapter 91: (2)
Although Anton spoke while brandishing his spear, the soldiers did not believe him. They continued to surround them from all sides.
Based on the nagging feeling in his mind, it seemed there might be another reason for this.
“Anton, for now, protect the other soldiers and Linda. If it doesn’t work out… we may have to break through.”
“What? Kaiyan, if you do that…”
Pushing the bewildered Anton aside, Kaiyan stepped forward to block the path, and the soldier who had been frightened by his presence earlier hurriedly called out some individuals who seemed to be knights slowly approaching from the rear.
“Knights! These individuals are the ones pretending to be nobles! It seems they intend to resist! We must eliminate them immediately!”
“Pretending to be nobles? What nonsense is this? What exactly is going on?”
One of the knights, after glancing at Kaiyan, asked the soldier. In response, the bewildered soldier pointed towards Linda.
“This morning, we received communication from the Empire, stating that individuals pretending to be nobles are heading towards the checkpoint! Based on their identical appearances to the descriptions in the communication, it’s clear they are the noble imposters!”
“Communication? I haven’t heard of such a thing. Bern, have you heard anything?”
The knight who had been talking to the soldiers turned to his fellow knight, who shrugged in response.
“This is the first I’m hearing of it. Tell me, is it confirmed that communication was received? Why wouldn’t me and Bouse know about it?”
“T-That’s true! Why would I lie about it? They are definitely the noble imposters!”
“Is that so? Hmmm… Bouse, how about we subdue them first and then try to establish communication with the Empire?”
At the knight’s suggestion to communicate with the Empire, the soldier’s face turned pale, and his unease was evident.
‘The communication must be a lie.’
Otherwise, there would be no reason for the soldier to be so anxious.
While Kaiyan wondered why this soldier wanted to kill them, he couldn’t help but be curious about who had concocted such a clumsy plan. Did they think the knights would kill them just because they were labeled noble imposters?
Suppressing a chuckle that threatened to escape, Kaiyan stepped back. Anton and the soldiers, who had been observing him, reluctantly sheathed their swords.
“What about them… Hmm? Why aren’t you putting down your swords?”
“Sigh… Let’s just do as he says.”
Though Kaiyan had been carrying the sword given to him by Tarien since receiving it, he felt that he should sheath it now. He reluctantly closed his eyes and placed the sword on the ground, all the while keeping in mind the potential harm that could come to Linda and her companions.
“Now, escort them to the checkpoint. And make sure to be polite, no matter what.”
Following the knight’s orders, the soldiers approached the carriage and led Kaiyan, Linda, and their companions into the building of the checkpoint. As they were being led inside, Kaiyan couldn’t help but notice the pale face of one soldier who seemed completely unprepared for this turn of events.
‘What a foolish fellow.’
Once the soldiers had escorted them inside the building and left, Bern and Bouse, the two knights, approached and took seats across from them.
“We’ve requested communication with the Empire, so it should connect shortly. Just to be sure, may I ask if you are indeed nobles?”
“Yes! I am a noble from the Markain family!”
“Haha, I see. Then there shouldn’t be any problems. Please wait a moment.”
After a brief moment, the communication device in front of a person named Bern lit up. Bern, holding the communication device, had a lengthy conversation before the device’s display turned hazy again.
Bern didn’t seem pleased after finishing the call.
“Hmm…”
“Bern, what’s the matter?”
“Baus, it appears this person is indeed a noble from the Mareon Empire. They claim to be the heir of the Markain family.”
“I see. But what’s the issue?”
“It seems we should have detained that soldier from earlier. The Empire reports no communication with us this morning.”
“What? Ah, I understand. I’ll go and apprehend that soldier immediately.”
As Baus left to capture the soldier, Bern lowered his head to Linda.
“I apologize. This incident occurred under my responsibility at the 5th Inspection Post.”
“No, it’s okay!”
“If Sir Baus detains the soldier, we’ll find out why they did such a thing. I apologize once again.”
“As expected. But who could stoop to such a low-level plan?”
Such a sloppy plan. It was almost laughable.
If Jansen were here, he would probably point fingers at the idiot who came up with this.
Let’s wait for a moment. Baus, who had gone outside to capture the soldier, returned. However, the soldier who should have come with him was nowhere to be seen.
“Why isn’t that soldier with you?”
“Well…”
Buas hesitated in his speech, exchanging glances with Linda and the others.
“It seems he escaped.”
“What? What are you talking about? A soldier from the Inspection Post ran away?”
“According to the other soldiers, he said he was going to the warehouse for a moment… But when they checked the warehouse, no one was there. It seems like he realized his lie was exposed and fled.”
“Ugh… This… of all things happening at our 5th Inspection Post. Somehow, that soldier’s expression seemed strange from the beginning.”
“Tsk tsk. We should have brought that soldier with us from the start.”
While it was wise not to attack us, it wasn’t handled cleanly.
If there was any suspicion, they should have either kept us under surveillance or brought the soldier along.
“I’m really sorry about this… I’ll make sure to capture the escaped soldier and communicate with the Markain family.”
“Alright. Can we leave now?”
“Yes, of course. Here, take this pass. If you show this pass when passing through the Inspection Post in the future, you won’t have any more issues like this.”
Bern guided us to the carriage with an apologetic expression, and when Linda was about to board the carriage, she suddenly seemed to recall something and stared at me in surprise.
“Uh… um! Mister, the cat is gone! What should we do…”
“It’s okay. I know where she is.”
“Really?”
“Yeah, so let’s get going.”
Rieka is probably chasing after the missing soldier right now.
Kaiyan asked her before we entered the Inspection Post building since he thought the soldier might flee. She readily agreed, given that Rieka can run faster than most people.
“When we catch that soldier, we’ll find out who was behind this foolish act.”
