A Living Armour Owns A Tavern - Chapter 11 Breakfas
Sarah woke up before sunrise. In the morning, she has to prepare breakfast for the children. She changed to her robes and stepped out of her room. She made her way to the chapel steps, and saw half dozen eggs, some beans, and a few wheats, placed neatly on one side. The food came from the charitable efforts of the townsfolk. The stout guard from last night even dropped by and gave a loaf of black rye bread.
Sarah then proceeds to the kitchen to prepare breakfast. An enticing aroma made its way through her nose.
“Such a Delicious smell!.” Sarah thought.
The smell of butter, cooked meat, and freshly baked bread! It is the first time she has smelled something this good!
“Miss Sarah? What are you cooking?” a voice came from behind. She looked back and saw the fox-eyed Cindy with her unkempt hair.
“Good morning Cindy, ur…, I haven’t started cooking yet,” replied Sarah.
Not a moment sooner, the other kids also stepped in.
“Miss Sarah! Can we eat already? We can’t hold it anymore! It smells sooo good! exclaimed Griffin. It seems that the children were woken up by the delicious smell. Ray and Little Sage were already long lost from the intoxicating aroma that is lingering all throughout the orphanage.
Not long after, heavy footsteps can be heard fast approaching.
“Mister Gus is cooking!” shouted Gretel. She cannot forget that smell! Its the familiar smell of butter and onions!
As they opened the kitchen door, they were greeted by an explosion of flavorful smell! On the hanging fire pit, is the cauldron of Pork stew, still piping hot! On the table is a basket of unleavened bread, freshly cooked from the looks of it.
The plates and cutlery have already been neatly arranged on the table. All they had to do is sit down and eat!
They saw a suit of armor busy slicing something on the kitchen counter. As he turned around, he greeted the family and invited them to the table.
“Good morning everyone! I hope you don’t mind me using your kitchen. Please sit!” invited Gus.
Everyone had their jaw gaping open. Sarah couldn’t believe the extravagant amount of food in front of her. There is even white bread! How could Gus get a hold of white flour? she thought. White flour is only available to the lords and nobles, as the local townsfolk cant afford it. Little Sage’s mouth is drooling wildly from the sight and smell of the food. She even cleaned her glasses and pinched herself to check if she was dreaming!
“What are you all doing guys?! Mr. Gus has kindly invited us to eat already!” Gretel said as she picked up her drooling little Sister Sage, and placed her down on a chair.
After Sarah placed the eggs and beans on the kitchen counter, she also sat down. Everybody else rushed to their seats to sit down as well. After saying grace, Ms. Sarah proceeded to give them a full helping of stew! She couldn’t believe there was so much stew!
Everyone is silent. They didn’t even converse with each other or give a compliment on the delicious food. Everyone was too busy eating! Sarah’s eyes widened.
“This….. Is this salt!? but how!?”
Sarah has only experienced the flavor of salt just once. She couldn’t believe that she can experience its’ flavor once again.
As soon as everyone was almost finished with their stew and bread, Gus’ served the ever famous Salty Bacon using salt and boar belly!
Everyone’s eyes were fixated on the magical dish. The smell of cooked bacon alone can make anybody salivate! He placed the cooked bacon in the middle and everybody just stabbed the poor dish with their forks.
Sarah dropped her fork as soon as she took her first bite. The kids couldn’t but help finish the bacon with their already bulging bellies. It was only after everything was gone when they finally started talking to each other again.
“I can’t eat another bite!”
“uhh….”
“Bacon is magical!”
Their reaction alone is Gus’ reward. He wanted nothing more than that.
Making Bacon is something Gus discovered by accident. By storing the salted pork belly in his spatial inventory, an option popped up if he wanted to cure his salted pork belly. This is a really useful feature for a cook. Besides having a pocket freezer, he can also store freshly cooked food and dry-cured or marinate meats without waiting!
“Congratulation User! you have leveled up!” said the system. He gained experience in feeding a lot of satisfied people. He jumped from level 3 to level 6!
He took a quick glance at his status function.

“Mr. Gus, you really didn’t have to use your precious salt.” said Sarah.
“I owe Gretel a favor, Ms. Sarah. besides, I really enjoy cooking. So it really is my pleasure.” replied Gus.
The children thanked Mr. Gus for the meal before they went off to do their morning chores. Little Sage even gave him a hug.
“I told you Mister Gus can cook, and you all laughed at me when I said a monster can cook! So, I believe I won our little bet!” said Gretel to her siblings. As Gretel was about to make her demands, everyone scurried off in all directions.
“HEY! COME BACK!” and off went Gretel to hunt them down.
After the kids left, Gus asked Sarah a question.
“Ms. Sarah, do you happen to know a merchant? One you can trust?”
