A Path Of Bone And Poison - Chapter 62 Soul Mates
When compared to myself or Hylia her stats were rather lack luster. But luckily her magic was not dependent on her stats, rather on her magic core. Perhaps this is why Wizards were so desired in this world. I did notice she had not purchased her class skill yet, and she told me she couldn’t decide between wisdom and intellegence. After thinking for a moment I told her to invest in wisdom. Her spells were relatively low cost, so as long as her regeneration could keep up with it she could keep casting indefinitely.
Her fireballs cost 100 mana, and she could cast 4 of them per second. That’s four hundred mana per second. If she could get her wisdom up to 4,000 she could keep casting them indefinitely. Of course that was a long say off, but even a thousand mile journey starts with a single step.
She nodded at my word and purchased the skill right away. I could tell that the mana around her was being absorbed at an increased rate. I nodded at her decision.
I did not stop to wait for her as I began to run to the Guild building. I had a rather ominous feeling that this would not be an isolated incident. The chaos I encountered at the guild showed that in was correct.
I ignored the crowds and went up the stairs. I did not need to wait on the beurocrocy as I headed straight to my mothers office. She was in the middle of a meeting with her door closed. I did not care as I slammed the door open. The man inside was the Elderly man who I had met earlier. He seemed outraged at my abrupt entry, but his mouth quickly shut when he saw the head I threw at him.
The head was rather grotesque. Half of the face was that of a mantis, the large yellow eyes and green skin. the other half was that of a familiar looking elf.
“The bug god has already made a move. Based on the chaos I witnessed downstairs Micah’s change is not an isolated incident.”
The elderly man paled visibly as he looked at the still bleeding severed head. Nonetheless he picked up the head and began to examine it. With practiced movements he cut the head open with a dagger. Inside was a small mantis looking insect, no bigger than the nail on your pinkie.
“This is a [Body Snatcher Insect]. They are native to an isolated island in the south east. When the insects were discovered the island has become a forbidden zone.”
He paused before continuing, taking the time to kill the small bug.
“There is only one known way to deal with them. which is to kill the host, and then remove the insect. If they are not killed in time they will breed in the Host, and send out hundreds of offspring.”
The man looked me up and down. “Your merits have all ready increased again.”
He bowed to my mother. “We will continue this conversation later. It seems I need to set up screening on all members of the guild. No, not just the guild, thenregulsr citizens must be screen as well. They are even more susceptible to these insects.”
Behind me Sierra was in awe as she bowed to the old man and my mother. “I apologize for the intrusion guild master and Vice guild master.”
The old man brushed her off with a wave. “I would expect no less from Arch Wizard Laurel’s only daughter.” He then walked out of the office in a hurried fashion.
Sierra looked at me in awe. “The vice guild leaders daughter? You mother is the famous “Ice Cold Laurel Dragonmaw?”
I shrugged, I had no idea about my mothers nickname or her reputation. “If you are talking about Vice leader Laurel that’s in front of you then yes. She is my mother. Don’t ask, it’s a long story.”
My mother sighed as she looked at us. “Why don’t you ever bring me good news Yuri? When was the last time you took me to the bathes?”
I laughed, “The bathes aren’t even open right now. What can you do about my team? I am very satisfied with Sierra, even if she is lacking any blessings. But, I need another member. You said we would need a team of four. Unless you plan on taking the last spot?” I eyed her suspiciously at the end.
My mother waved her hand dismissively. If what you said about what’s going on downstairs then there will be plenty of available adventures to be assigned to new teams. I will see what I can do. It looks like all you’re lacking is a capable warrior. But in that regard you will never find someone as good as Hylia was. Even finding someone as capable as Micah was hard.”
I nodded at her words. “If that is the case then just find us someone good, it doesn’t matter the class. And preferably female. We can just use Hylia as a tank. Her archery works at close range anyways, and she has incredible defense.”
Laurel looked between Hylia and me. Hylia lifted up her front legs, and crossed them. She somehow put on an arrogant expression that seemed to be teasing her aunt. My mother scrunched up her face at Hylia and said “Don’t you give me any sass young lady”.
I was shocked at my mothers words. “You can hear her?”
My mother shook her head. “Of course not, the only one that can hear her is you. She’s YOUR familiar. But I have raised that child for a long time. If I couldn’t understand her body language then I would he almost as dense as you.”
I pondered for a moment before saying. “I’d she evolves will instill be able to? Like if she gains the ability to actually speak?”
“Of course. Shes a familiar now. Even if she were to somehow gain her original body back it doesn’t change the fact that she shares your life force. If you want to get technical you guys are “Soul Mates”.
My mother laughed at her own joke. To be fair Hylia was laughing too, just no one else could hear it.
