A Reincarnated General Manager - Chapter 5 The End So Soon? 1
“Tonight the Eagles face the Patriots for Super Bowl 52.” The announcer echoed in the room.
“I’m back?” Tony pondered. He felt himself over and grabbed a glass to see his reflection. He was back in his original body.
“I’m back…” A tear left his eye at the realization. That single night as the GM as the Browns was exhausting but at the same time exhilarating. He gained a passion along with a respect for what every GM has to go through for draft night. He had it easy too, he didn’t have to spend months combing through tapes and reports looking for the one thing that says this man is a lost cause.
“So it really was all a dream.” He swooshed his drink around the glass before he dunked it down the hatch. His vision brought back to the TV the passion he held for the team he grew up watching was lost for a moment. He wanted to be there, he wanted to be the reason a team made it.
“Tony Rose, world’s best General Manager, boy what I would give.” He scoffed at the idea, he decided it would only be left as a dream.
“Monologuing to yourself now? Can’t take the embarrassment if the Eagles lose, again?” A chirpy voice criticized from behind, a hidden laugh below.
“If it isn’t Miss Boston. Come to see your beloved Patriots lose? Or are you here to see me?” Tony put on a smile, a genuine smile. As he turned around what greeted him was a girl about his age but was wearing a Tom Brady jersey with the NFL emblem on it. She had white hair and stood a head shorter than Tony. Her eyes were dark and clashed with Tony’s light ones. Her thin lips were curved into a smile matching’s his own.
She walked up to and didn’t stop until their bodies were touching and in a low voice teased, “I did come to see you…” She stood up on her toes and leaned in inches from kissing him.
“Cry when the Eagles lose.” She then proceeded to take the filled glass from Tony hand and walk over to the couch. Tony chuckled to himself and shook his head. He poured himself a new glass and sat beside her.
“Sean coming tonight?” She inquired her eyes glued to the TV.
“No, just the two of us. Sean is off at whatever other party is being held tonight.” Tony explained his eyes glued to her, a small smile on his face from the moment she entered. Following his explanation, she leaned into his chest. Tony didn’t fight it and wrapped his arms around her. The two were silent.
Tony’s mind wasn’t there, he still thought about how he would go about drafting in the next day. It was a dream but everything felt so real to him, that he felt a desire to solve this. What was the best course of action for the next rounds?
Here he was with a beautiful girl in his arms thinking about draft picks. We can all agree he has his priorities in line, that’s for sure.
They stayed in previously mentioned position until kickoff started. Where she jumped out of his arms screaming with joy.
“Let’s go!”
Tony laughed and returned the screams when he saw begin a return out to the 26. “Beat them into the ground!” He hollered, a bright smile clearly showing.
The first drive may have ended in a field goal but it didn’t matter to Tony. They were winning.
“First score Eagles, drink up.” He leaned over the table grabbed a filled shot glass and handed it over.
She returned to him a stern or annoyed look before pitching her nose and downing it. Miss Boston wasn’t too happy with the taste visible by her actions.
“Having a hard time already, Katherine?”
“Tony Tony Tony, this is only the beginning.”
With the Patriots own first drive, Tony kept on shouting about bad tackling while pointed and laughed before going back to cheering. They held them out the end zone but they did get a field goal.
“3 all. At this rate, you might be taking the next shot.” Katherine taunted her tongue held out.
“I have faith in the Eagles! E-A-G-L-E-S EAGLES!” He cheered, laughing afterward.
Kate not long into the Eagle’s drive ate her words.
“TOUCHDOWN! 34 yards Alshon Jeffery!” He could hear others shouting from outside as well.
“Drink up, I might be ending tonight sober.” He handed her another shot.
“Don’t count your chickens before they hatch. Don’t forget about super bowl 51.”
Then Jake Elliot missed the Point after touchdown (PAT).
“Do we rule about that?” Tony questioned the passion from earlier immediately gone.
“Never thought about it. We do now though. So drink up.” She poured him a shot and forced it into his hands.
Tony smiled and downed it much as she had but without the performance after. He actually enjoyed the taste. He did grab his coffee though, he didn’t want to be drunk. Kate followed grabbed hers too.
The Eagles held the Patriots back from scoring and Tony jumped with joy while Kate wallowed in sadness.
“TOUCHDOWN!” Tony roared. The happiness he was experiencing at this moment was one hard to match.
They both had to take shots as the Eagles failed a 2 point conversion.
Kate didn’t seem near as joyful as when this all started she only cheered moderately when they scored another field goal. She didn’t even taunt Tony for the failed defense. He wouldn’t admit it but seeing her like this was boring to him.
She didn’t stay like this long as a pass was intercepted. She hollered in euphoria the feeling of joy immediately brought back to her.
A shot was forced into Tony’s hands, a smile beaming from her face. Tony didn’t initially comment and simply drank it.
“Don’t think it is over yet! There is still plenty of time. What was this about staying sober?”
“If this is all there, I’ll be sober without a problem.” He retorted. It wasn’t all they had, they ran down the field and scored a touchdown. Evidently, they both had to drink as another PAT was missed.
“Defense!”
“4th and goal. Got to be a run play can’t make the same mistake as the Seahawks.”
Tony watched as Nick Foles stepped out of the shotgun and walked over the RT. He was confused but as he saw the ball get snapped he knew what was happening. With a lob into the endzone, he screamed as loud as he could. It was a pass to the QB for a touchdown on fourth and goal!
“Are you shitting me! Are you shitting me!” Tony didn’t even get to watch the celebration and Kate turned off the TV in anger. Tony was left in a stupor originally but when he saw her shaking the remote he fell to the floor laughing.
“Sour loser?”
“It’s only half time.” She countered.
“So turn back on the TV and take your shots like a grown lady.”
“You going to make me?”
“I will.”
“You and what army?”
“Who needs an army when it’s only you?” He stood up from the ground and slowly stepped over to her. She jumped over the couch and when Tony would go one way to get to her she would go around the other. They two looked like children and judged by their laughter, they were.
They moved from the couch over the island in the kitchen, which was the separator between the living room and kitchen. “How long till you give up and hand over the remote?” He inquired a light pant heard in his voice from chasing her.
“I thought you said you didn’t need an army to catch me? Now you want me to surrender? That doesn’t seem normal.”
Tony slid across the island and by the time she started running he had closed the distance enough. He had her wrapped in his arms and he threw her over his shoulder.
“Tsk. Kate Kate Kate, it seems you underestimated me.”
He walked back over the couch and laid her out on it. With the remote now in hand he felt a desire to return to the game, but as he looked her parted lips he felt a need to kiss her.
He fought against this desire. However, when he turned away from her and back to the TV she grabbed him by the collar and pulled him in. Tony reciprocated the kiss and the game was long forgotten to them both.
