- Chapter 31:The tears of guilt.
After sometime, something warm entered my body. Then it vanished. The process repeated several times and I was curious to see what that was. I slowly opened my heavy eyelids and stared into the space.
I was lying in a clean, small bed in an unfamiliar room. Wooden ceiling had something embedded into it. Soft light was emitting from that thing, so I figured that it was a magic stone. Donne told me about them. I tried to move but a heavy object was pressing my chest. I lifted my head and saw a small Ago-bird sleeping. It’s small yellow beak was letting out some quiet snores and a little bubble would occasionally appear from its ‘nose’
‘What a cutey.’ A small laughter left my mouth, waking this little ball of fluff.
” CHIRP!”
A high pitched ‘chirp’ left little guy’s mouth, startling me. The little Ago flew away through the open window and a few seconds later, Donne ran inside in his human form. He looked really tired and happy at the same time.
” Mirta, you are finally awake! Thank you Mother of all beings, Celestial Huri! I was getting a feeling that you will never wake up!”
Donne hugged me tightly and tears flowed like a river from his eyes.
“I was getting impatient and was ready to leave the forest to search for cure if that geezer’s magic didn’t work.”
” Donne, just how long was I asleep to get you to this state?”
” For a three days.” An unfamiliar voice resounded in the room. I looked in the direction of the voice and saw an old grandpa standing there with a trey, carrying some plates. He walked up to us, put the trey on the cupboard next to the bed…. and gave Donne a tight slap on the face!
” WHO’S OLD GEEZER,HUUH?! I WAS KNOWN FOR MY ABILITIES, SO THERE WAS NO WAY I WOULDN’T BE ABLE TO CURE HER!”
Donne stood up rubbing his cheek looking a little embarrassed.
” Sorry… I was acting on my emotions..”
The old man turned to me, smiling sheepishly, not paying hurt Donne any heed.
“It’s….okay? Where am I?”
” In my house.”
Well, this much is obvious.
” You are still inside the forest. My brother and I live here for around 50 years by now.” He looked out of the window. ” Do your hands hurt?”
“My hands?… AH! Right! That monster probably broke them!” I inspected my arms but found nothing amiss. When I woke up I moved my arms several times, but due to all of the new thing happening didn’t notice it at all.
” They are healed! So there is healing magic after all!”
” After all?” The grandpa spoke with surprised expression. “Donne, you didn’t teach her anything other than mana control, right?”
Right now, I think I heard something really important. SO THAT’S THE REASON I DIDN’T GET STRONGER THAT MUCH! Even the spells I know ( Wind voice, Airship and Rudrus) were made up by me. When we would train together with Donne, I would occasionally ask how to say that or this word and since it was really rare, he didn’t find out.
“Little girl, why did you think that there is healing magic?”
And what should I answer to this question? ‘ In the novels that I red back in my past life, healing magic is a common thing’?
” W-well, I always thought that it would be cool to have magic that could heal all of the scratches when I fall…”
‘Buy this, old man, please.’ I made a cute, confused expression. ‘ Cuteness attack! Max level!’
He nodded at my explanation. He opened his mouth, intending to say something; however, Donne interrupted. He held my face between his palms and looking straight into my eyes, asked.
” Mirta, what were you thinking!? Entering the Great Forest alone is equivalent to throwing yourself straight into the mouth of literally any Monster! I’m not even talking about swamps, poisonous plants and corrosive miasma in some places!”
I tried to avert my eyes, but he held me tightly. I opened my mouth; however they almost instantly shut themselves. In my previous life, I was good at reading other people’s hearts. It is said that eyes are the doors to one’s heart. And I believe that saying. In his eyes guilt and genuine worry were mixed together. Suddenly it hit me.
‘I am his student and he had the responsibility in front of my parents. We spend a lot of time together and our bonds became stronger. And here I am, running around very dangerous forest and even was almost killed just a few days ago. Of course he would be worried and probably blame himself for not being there on time. I am the biggest idiot in the world.’
I shivered. I finally realised that I could die again. The fear that I felt when I was chased by that Monster resurfaced, but at that time I was under the effect of adrenaline, so I didn’t feel all that scared. I was trying to survive. However, now It hit me with all of the might. My body continued to shake and tears flooded my eyes.
” I’m so sorry, Donne! I was not obedient and went inside, even though you forbade me! I made you worried and almost died! I Am…. R-really Sorryyy!”
I cried my eyes out while he stared at me, probably startled by my sudden breakdown. His arms hugged me and he gently caressed my hair. We sat like this for around 20 minutes and all of this was seen by the old man.
‘ Looks like even Donne can change.’ A small smile formed on the bearded, wrinkled face of his.
