A Wanderer's Lies - Chapter 66: Assessing the Golden Six [3]
Isaac, with Ghost’s Passage active, watched the battle that was about to begin not too far away from him.
This was what he was interested in.
If anything, this exercise would give Isaac a chance to assess the Golden Six.
Not only that, but he could witness the opponent Harrison wanted to put him up against, as well as figure out what it truly meant to be Rank 1.
Seeing Jett sprint toward the middle, passing Daniel at the start, gave Isaac the perfect chance to slip past the surveillance and disappear.
And now, he planned to analyse his opponents peacefully.
Meanwhile, outside the forest, the students and Orion watched with intrigued expressions.
“Does it matter what tricks he has? I mean, Cain is higher ranked.” Heather commented as Orion shook his head.
“Don’t judge everything based on Rank. It’s highly untrustworthy. I was beating A-rankers when I was a simple D-rank.”
Although Orion stated this confidently, Heather couldn’t help but judge it.
Nevertheless, she stayed quiet as she watched the battle.

“Woah, Jett. You look awesome!” Cain yelled in surprise.
Before him stood Jett with a serious and determined expression.
His blue eyes seemed as though they were glowing brighter than usual, while the orange flame on his forehead burned just as bright.
His red and white mittens had morphed, turning into black and silver gloves with a sphere protruding outward on the back of his hand.
Contrary to his previous self, exuding nervousness and timid nature, Jett now stood as a confident and intimidating man.
“I get all the ladies, and beat the strongest men,” Jett mumbled under his breath as Cain raised an eyebrow.
“I’m sorry, did you say…”
Before Cain was finished, he witnessed Jett’s gloves suddenly combust in the same orange flame.
Simultaneously, Jett disappeared from his position, reappearing before Cain in less than a second as a knee drove into Cain’s face.
-BANG
A loud BANG could be heard as Cain took a step back, barely managing to put his palm between the knee and his face.
‘He’s fast.’
Cain thought, seeing Jett’s unchanging expression.
‘And those gloves…’
Before Cain could deduce anything further, Jett disappeared once again, this time appearing behind Cain.
Swinging for a kick, Jett’s leg moved like a whip, Cain barely blocking with his forearm.
‘He’s using those gloves to propel himself.’
Cain thought, seeing the flames bursting from Jett’s hand that were so powerful they increased his speed.
It was because of this boost in speed that Jett could blitz around Cain, disappearing and reappearing in every direction and throwing attacks.
No matter where it was, from above, from low, from the side, Jett unleashed a blitzing flurry of attacks on Cain.
However, Cain stood his ground.
Despite him feeling as though he was trapped, no attacks passed his skilled defence.
He would dodge a kick, block a knee and anticipate a skilled Axe kick.
‘He’s…pushing back Cain.’ Ava watched in disbelief.
“Enough!”
Cain was tired of being on the receiving end.
Blocking one more attack, he slightly bent his knees as a burst of white aura exploded from him.
-BOOM
The sheer power that erupted from Cain coated him, making Jett leap back as he felt his instincts kick in.
‘He’s stronger than before. Is this the power of Ki?’
Jett assessed, watching Cain enter a stance.
“My turn!”
Cain leapt off the ground, seemingly increasing in speed as he appeared before Jett, throwing a punch.
Jett, widening his eyes and barely able to react, crossed his arm in an X shape, blocking the punch but being sent soaring toward a large tree.
“KHRM!”
Jett winced in pain, feeling his arms throbbing.
Yet, despite this, he was able to pull back his arms, facing his palms toward the tree as his hands let out an eruption of flames, allowing him to pause his momentum and prevent smashing into the tree.
However, before he could have even a second for respite, Cain followed him, coming face to face with Jett once again.
Raising his leg, Cain shot out his heel, attempting to strike Jett in his gut.
-BANG
However, his foot was met with the solid wood of the tree as it slowly broke down.
“Woah, he’s flying!”
“That’s amazing!”
The students watching exclaimed.
Above Cain, Jett used the flames erupting from his hand to propel into the air, flying as he drew further and further away from the ground.
Yet upon looking down, his eyes widened in surprise as he scurried to move.
“I can do that too,” Cain spoke, he too flew with the aura still surrounding him.
Due to this element of surprise, Jett was unable to dodge as Cain cracked his fist across the side of Jett’s face.
-BANG
The sheer force of the attack was so clear even the students who watched the fight on the holographic screen couldn’t help but wince.
The colour in Jett’s eyes faded, as it was clear the punch had caused him damage.
However…
-BANG
Jett suddenly turned his body, his arm moving like a whip and striking Cain in the face as the large boy’s head snapped back.
The both of them shot to the ground, smashing into the dirt as dust kicked up into the air.
Meanwhile, Isaac watched with an intrigued and shocked expression, as if he’d just seen a plot twist in a movie.
‘What was that?’
Isaac thought, seeing Jett’s spontaneous attack.
‘Despite being on the brink of unconsciousness, it’s like his body moved instinctively, counterattacking.’
Isaac was still figuring it out.
As he was, the dust cleared as Cain was revealed wiping the blood off the corner of his mouth.
Additionally, Jett could be seen standing on his two feet.
His face was darkened, and his back was hunched while his arms lifelessly hung to his side.
-BOOM
Once again, the aura exploded around Cain, as the muscular boy kicked off the ground, raising his arm.
As he did, Jett’s head slightly raised, revealing his snake-like eyes.
Bending his legs, Jett raised his two arms, forming them in the shape of a mantis.
As Cain swung…his fist was met with air.
‘What the hell…’
Isaac thought.
Jett barely flowed past the fist, his eyes burning as he drew closer inside Cain’s defences.
‘He’s like…a river.’
“Water Stream Rock Smashing Fist: Piercing Fang.”
Just as Jett’s fingertips pressed against Cain’s solar plexus, the flames suddenly returned, combusting.
-BANG
Jett’s blow landed as all the air in Cain’s lungs left his body, as well as a fair amount of blood.
Cain stepped back, struggling to catch his breath again as an indent was left in his torso.
However, he was given no time to recover as Jett once again dawned on him like a relentless predator.
Fighting through his pain, Cain threw a punch.
“Instant Movement.”
Cain threw his punch, but he missed.
Cain was far off as Jett was nowhere near the punch.
‘His footwork…’
Cain thought, seeing Jett’s feet move at a rapid and unpredictable pace.
-BANG
Cain once again suffered another blow across the side of his face as his head threatened to fly off his shoulders.
Despite this, Cain grits his teeth, standing his ground and throwing a backhand punch.
Due to this unpredictable and unorthodox attack, Jett was unable to dodge.
“Water Stream Encampment.”
Cain’s arm was sent off course, flailing through the air and leaving him open once again as the large boy widened his eyes.
“Piercing Fang.”
Jett shot out his fingers like a dagger once again, however, he witnessed his attack phase through Cain as if he weren’t even there.
The Cain he saw before him distorted, soon disappearing with the wind as if he were nothing more than air.
Nothing more than an afterimage.
Jett, darting his head to find his opponent, soon spotted him a few metres away, his fingers spread out on each side of his head.
‘He has me beat in combat, but I’ve got more up my sleeve.’ Cain thought, moving his lips as he yelled.
“Solar Flare!”
A blinding light flashed from Cain as Jett closed his eyes on instinct, entering a defence stance as he realised he was vulnerable.
The students too covered their eyes as everything happening had been shrouded in blinding light.
However, the counterattack Jett was waiting for never came.
As his vision started to return, he looked around, unable to locate his opponent.
“Hey!”
Jett snapped his head up, seeing Cain floating in the air.
Under normal circumstances, Cain would never reveal his position.
However, his empathy got the better of him.
After all, this was a friendly battle between his peers.
He didn’t want to kill them.
With both hands over each other on his forehead, a ball of yellow energy started to form.
“Damnit,” Jett muttered, feeling the power from the attack.
Cain had realised he was no match in close range with Jett.
However, he still held the upper hand in power.
Jett raised his gloved hands, ready to make a shape with them.
“Minus P…no, it’s not ready.”
Halting his hands and words, Jett changed and positioned his hands with his two index fingers and thumbs touching, leaving a large hole in the middle.
“Masenko!”
-BOOM
Cain yelled as Isaac witnessed a smudge of red in his aura, an overwhelming burst of energy unleashing and breaking through.
The sheer power of it raised the dust and pebbles in the air as the plant life suffered as though they were in a tornado.
The beam of energy tore through the air, drawing closer to Jett by the second.
Meanwhile, the flames on Jett’s hand and forehead changed.
From the flowing tranquillity it was before, to a knocking flame that shot out unpredictably.
“Zero Point Breakthrough: First Edition.”
-SHING
In an instant, the powerful burst of energy halted, instantly freezing into ice as it stopped right before Jett.
-CRACK
Not long after, cracks started to form in the frozen piece, running across the ice like lightning in the sky.
-SHATTER
Inevitably, the piece of ice shattered into tiny specs of what looked like clear glass raining onto Jett.
Jett, out of breath and his flames burning less brightly, searched for his opponent, but Cain had disappeared.
“Masenko!”
A voice came from behind Jett, as he snapped his head back.
He didn’t need to see to know what was coming, therefore, he put his hands together in a familiar position.
“Zero Point Bre…”
But it was too late.
-BOOM
The yellow beam of energy collided with Jett, as his fatigue caused his block to falter, his defence soon crumbling as the attack swallowed him whole.
“Woah!”
“It hit him!”
As the beam subsided, Jett could be seen laying on the ground, the flames disappeared and his gloves returned to the red and white mittens labelled ’27’.
Cain breathed heavily as he dropped to one knee, then to his buttocks as the backlash of the battle started to kick in.
Meanwhile, Daniel watched from the distance, his mouth gaping wide as he watched in astonishment.
‘S-So powerful…’
His previous anger was quickly replaced with bewilderment as he watched the battle.
He watched the two powerhouses duke it out, one question repeating in his mind.
‘Could I…?’
Could I dodge that?
Could I block that?
Could I survive that?
Could…would I even stand a chance?
Daniel was arrogant and knew what his strength was capable of.
However, it was because he knew what he was capable of that he watched with disbelief.
He’d never paid any attention to Jett. Seeing as though the latter was a lower rank than him, he never thought it necessary to ponder on those lesser than him.
The Golden Six ranked, being Cain, Lucy, Daniel, Amara, Jett then Ava.
Despite Lucy also being higher than him, he focused his attention on Cain, thinking if he were to beat him, it would be the same as passing Lucy.
However, he was mistaken.
‘Cain, Lucy…and now Jett.’
As Daniel thought this, rustling could be heard from behind as Amy stepped out from the plant life.
With her blond hair in a ponytail and sharp eyes, she stayed alert, slowly bringing her hand toward her mouth.
“I yield.”
Daniel, with a dark face, walked past Amy as she stood with a confused and surprised expression.
***
‘Wow…’
Those were the only words Isaac could utter upon witnessing the battle between Cain and Jett.
‘Fire, fangs, then Ice? He’s who I was supposed to fight?’
Despite Jett losing, it was a very close battle. One which could have easily tipped in Jett’s favour at any moment.
Additionally, Isaac had the feeling that both of them still had more they hadn’t shown.
‘Without a doubt, he far exceeds me in martial prowess at the moment. Without an Art, I’d be no better than Cain in that fight.’
Upon Daniel conceding, Isaac gave up quickly after, much to the dismay of Andrew who had been searching for him.
The rest of the battles passed, none reaching the excitement of the first.
And so, the class ended an hour later.
As everyone left the grassy plains, speaking on the first battle, Isaac followed behind, he too was still thinking about the result.
-DING
However, something quickly drew his attention as a pleasant ‘Ding’ could be heard from Isaac’s Swatch.
“Meet me in the Cafe where we first met – Ava.”
