A Wanderer's Lies - Chapter 69: Specialist Nen [2]
“Water Divination.”
In the auditorium where the Nen Mastery class was being held, dozens of students could be seen sweating profusely as they tried their best to keep Ren activated.
Meanwhile, not too far away from these students were a handful of youths, standing around a tall table as Xavier spoke in the middle.
Before Xavier was a simple wine glass with water inside filled to the brim and most notably, a single leaf atop the water.
“A tool used for classifying Aura. It’s also used to train Hatsu, but since you all have reached a level three in Nen Proficiency, this should pose no difficulty.”
As Xavier spoke, a tall female student with brunette, long hair and delicate features raised her hand.
“Professor Hall, what do you mean by classifying Aura?”
“Good question.”
Xavier pulled over a whiteboard as he drew a hexagon with words written on each side.
“Hatsu is separated into six categories. Enhancer, Transmuter, Conjurer, Emitter, Manipulator and finally, Specialist.”
Xavier pointed to the top side of the hexagon where Enhancer was labelled.
“Firstly, Enhancer. Those with this Nen affinity can greatly increase the physical capabilities of themselves and objects with their Aura.”
“Transmuters can give their Aura special properties.”
“Conjurers can manifest their Aura, creating tangible objects which can be seen by both Nen and Non-Nen users.”
“Emitters can separate their Aura from their body to increase the distance or duration.”
“Manipulators can use their Aura to control objects and creatures.”
“And finally, Specialists are those with a special Aura that doesn’t fall within the other five categories.”
Xavier spoke while pointing to each side of the Hexagon which was labelled with a Nen affinity.
‘Interesting.’
Meanwhile, Isaac listened to this all, intrigued since this was the first time he was hearing about these Nen Types.
“You said affinity. Can you elaborate, please?” The same girl raised her hand.
“Of course. You see, each person is born with an affinity in one of these categories and today, we’ll be finding out what these affinities are for each of you. Who wants to go first?”
“I will!”
The same girl once again raised her hand, stepping up to the wine glass.
It was clear to Isaac and the rest of the students that she was a willing teacher’s pet, but they didn’t mind watching how it was done before they gave it a shot.
“Excellent. Wrap your hands around the glass and activate your Ren, concentrating on the glass.”
With a nod, the female began.
“Ren!”
-FUAM
Her Aura expanded rapidly as she focused all her attention on the glass.
Shortly after, one could see the water tremble slightly, suddenly overflowing as the water spilt.
“Okay, that’s enough.” Xavier scurried to wipe the overflowing water as the female removed her hands.
“Well done, the water overflowed, meaning you’re an Enhancer.”
The tall girl smiled brightly as she headed back to where she stood.
“Who’s next?”
The students stared at Isaac, seeing as he was the closest to the table.
“Me.”
And Isaac welcomed the chance.
“As usual, wrap your hands around the glass and activate your Ren.”
Isaac nodded, doing as he was told.
“Ren!”
-FUAM
The aura shot out as he concentrated on the glass, focusing as his Aura coated it.
However, after a few seconds, nothing happened.
‘Is it supposed to take this long?’
Seeing no results, Isaac thought he must have not been putting enough Aura into it.
Therefore, the pressure around the glass increased as Isaac intensified his Aura.
Yet, still nothing.
“Khn”
A few sniggers and held-back laughter could be heard from behind as sweat ran down the side of Isaac’s face.
He didn’t care about the mocking, he was more focused on why he seemed unworthy.
“That’s enough,” Xavier spoke, grabbing Isaac’s attention, and causing the boy to lose focus.
Deactivating Ren, Isaac wiped the sweat off his face.
“What’s wrong? Nothing happened.” Isaac asked, yet Xavier seemed calm and unbothered.
“Not necessarily. Taste the water.”
Isaac raised an eyebrow. Though confused, he did as he was told, dipping his finger into the water and putting it into his mouth.
As he did, he widened his eyes.
‘It’s sweet. Almost too sweet, like those cheap knock-off soft drinks you can find in local supermarkets.’
Upon seeing his reaction, the other students felt confused, also dipping their fingers into the water and then into their mouths.
“Woah, it tastes like soda.”
“Yeah, if this is how water tasted I wouldn’t have so much trouble drinking it.”
Amara also had a taste, peering at Isaac from the corner of her eye, before giving a satisfied nod.
‘Soda?’ Xavier thought, furrowing his eyebrows as he tasted the water.
As he did, he paused, stunned as he turned his head to Isaac.
‘This is far too sweet to be the product of someone his level.’
Meanwhile, Isaac noticed this gaze as he pretended to be clueless.
‘Crap crap crap crap. Why the hell didn’t he tell us the outcome for each Nen type? I’d have put less Aura into the water.’
Because Isaac was expecting a visible reaction from the water, like with the girl before him, he never stopped to think the water itself was changing.
Therefore, he overdid it and it seemed like Xavier noticed.
However, the professor snapped out of his trance as he returned to his usual self.
“Isaac, you’re a Transmuter.”
Isaac furrowed his eyebrows upon hearing this.
‘Hmm, that isn’t ideal.’
At the moment, Isaac wasn’t too educated on the concept of Nen Types, the only knowledge he had on it being the basic introduction he found in the books he’d been reading.
However, there was one problem he had with this.
“Manipulator.”
“Conjurer.”
“Enhancer.”
“Manipulator.”
“Emitter.”
The rest of the students quickly passed the tests, until there was one more person left.
“Amara, I believe you’re the last.”
Amara nodded, walking toward the wine glass as the students watched intently, some cheering her on.
With the large glasses on her face, she peered at the glass, soon wrapping her hands around it.
“Ren!”
-BOOM
Her Aura exploded, incomparable to the surrounding students as they watched in awe despite seeing it once before.
Focusing her Aura into the glass, almost instantly, a reaction could be seen.
Though, it wasn’t one they’d seen before.
The surface of the water began to shimmer and distort, transforming into a mirror-like reflection.
On the reflection, everyone around the cup could see themselves and those standing around them, like they would a normal mirror.
However, despite Amara standing right in front of the reflective surface, she failed to appear in the mirror, as if she was invisible.
“Professor, what’s going on?” The tall brunette asked.
“Congratulations, Amara. You are a Specialist.”
Gasps of awe and amazement could be heard from a few of the students.
“Although, I can’t comment on what’s happening in the mirror. It’s as if your Aura doesn’t recognise you.”
Xavier faced Amara, as she forgot he was blind for a second, averting her gaze as a troubled expression flashed across her face, her hands scurrying away from the glass.
However, upon noticing the stares, she quickly regained her composure as she glided back to her position, her chin held high.
“Anyway, now that we’re all done, I’d like you all to open your status.”
Shrugging, the students did as they were told, not knowing why.
Isaac also opened his status as he was intrigued.

“As you can all see, the system has labelled your Nen Types with levels and most importantly, efficiency levels.”
Xavier spoke, noticing the tall brunette about to raise her hand but beating her to the punch.
“You see, Isaac for example who is a natural-born Transmuter will have 100% efficiency in that Nen type.”
“However, his efficiency percentage for Enhancer and Conjurer will only be 80% since his affinity for them isn’t as great.”
“The further on the Hexagon the Nen Type is from his natural affinity, the lower his efficiency percentage will be in them.”
‘That’s simple enough. It explains why my efficiency is less with Emission and Manipulation, seeing as how they are the furthest from Transmuter on the Hexagon. But shouldn’t everything be fine if I increase my level with them?’
Isaac thought, and as if Xavier could read his thoughts, he spoke once again.
“Additionally, efficiency is a big part of your Nen. Just because your level is high, doesn’t cancel out your low efficiency.”
“Once again using Isaac as an example. If he’d reached level 10, the max level, as a Transmuter, thus giving him a level 4 in Manipulation, he would be far weaker than a natural level 4 Manipulator.”
Isaac raised an eyebrow upon hearing this.
Despite him being on the same level as a natural-born Manipulator, he was somehow weaker.
“This is because of the efficiency. Isaac, only having a 40% efficiency in Manipulation, would be forced to expend far greater Aura in using it, as well as having a result of only 40% effectiveness.”
“Whereas the natural born Manipulator, with 100% efficiency, would expend far less Aura, and his result would be 100% effective.”
‘Ah, it makes sense.’
Isaac understood, nodding his head.
He simply thought of it as Talent.
No matter how much one trained, one could never overcome the boundaries of natural talent, or in this case, efficiency.
Therefore, it seemed like a bad idea to cultivate an ability with the Manipulator Nen type for Isaac as it’d simply be too time-consuming and counterproductive.
Realising this, Isaac inwardly clicked his teeth. The more he learnt about the Nen Types, the more unsatisfied he felt.
As a Transmuter, cultivating an ability which needed Manipulation was unwise. But the thing was, he needed Manipulation.
As well as Conjuration, Enhancement and all the other Nen Types.
“This is the case for everything except the Specialisation Nen Type. If you are not a Specialist, you can never access that Nen Type.”
Isaac nodded upon hearing this, noticing his Specialisation at zero efficiency. However, there was one thing Isaac wasn’t understanding as he stared at his status window.
[0% Efficiency
Specialisation

Next chapter title: Training (single chapter)
I apologise for the info dump, but everyone knows Nen is a vast and complex PS.
If it had been something like Chakra, I’d have spent a few paragraphs explaining before moving on.
But Nen is less popular and less well known completely.
More explained about the last sentence next chapter, but if you can’t wait, just check out my Patreon!
