A Woman Hopelessly In Love - Chapter 4 Recovery Is The Reward..
Shirley went to her room and kept her mobile to charge then went and lied down on her couch .Took the landline phone and called her assistant on the outer reception desk “Lily, get me a cappuccino with extra sugars. Please. ” Lily instantly replied ” Yes , Doc.”
Lily was Dr Shirley’s assistant. She was a short, slim and a cute women who was always vibrant. She initially didn’t like Dr Shirley because of her strict ways and cold nature. But once when she was sick and was not given leave by the hospital, Dr Shirley intervened and got her a week long leave sanctioned and would send her soups and food at her place delivered so that she got better soon. Since then their professional rapport was one every one was jealous of. She would do all the work perfectly as Dr Shirley wants it done.
As Shirley was about to sleep there was a knock on the door she thought it’s Lily so she just said ” You came…Can u please give my cell phone from the table I had kept it to charge. And how come you are back so soon.” But there was no response. She opened her eyes and looked towards the door and was taken aback by what she saw.
A tall, tanned guy in a well tailored designer suit was starring at her in a stern icy look. He looked very familiar. His face was expressionless and the room suddenly dropped its temperature by a few degrees as he walked in. She realized she had offended him so said ” I’m so sorry. I thought it’s my assistant.”
He didn’t say a word and calmly closed the door behind him, walked towards the table with his one hand in his pocket and unplugged her phone and charger and brought it to her. She was embarrassed and wanted to die that instant. She blabbered in embarrassement ” That was not necessary.. but thank you.”
He just walked across her after handing over her phone and sat down on the couch in front of her and said in a calm voice “I’m Derrick Marshal , I am here to speak about my brother , Enrique . I hear that you are one taking care of him.”
She was blank his voice and her face stuck in amazement, she just couldn’t blink. His face was familiar because she saw him on yesterdays Bussiness Standard magazine front cover “Most eligible Bachelor Bussinessman of the year”. But some how she gathered all her thoughts up and replied in a calm tone. ” You heard it right! I am Dr Shirley Clark your brothers attending Neurosurgeon. I operated on him this morning.”
She continued ” He was brought in today with a epidural hematoma due to a Middle meningeal artery bleed due to the trauma he suffered. We had to operate to evacuate the excess bleeding and embolize the artery. The surgery was a success. His brain swelling should come down with in 24 hours. So we have sedated him for now. He might have some weakness for which physiotherapy will be needed once his wound heals.”
He listened to all the details and didn’t blink even once as if he was memorizing every word that fell out of her mouth. He then sighed in relief and asked. ” What reward do you want for saving my brothers life? You have done me the biggest favour ever. My brother is our everything I owe you .”
She smiled with a hint of anger in her eyes and responded ” I am a surgeon and a successful surgery followed by a good recovery of my patient is the biggest reward.” She smiled.
” And Mr Marshal thanks for the offer and gesture.I really appreciate it. I was just doing my job. And if there is nothing more. I would like to take some rest now. It’s been quite a long day.”
He was very much curious , it was the first time someone has said no to his offer and even cut him off so politely. He was very much impressed. As others would have asked a million dollars or his reference for some huge investment and what not. But she just denied all of it and being a women showed no interest in him. That was the first. He just nodded. And got up to leave as he was almost out of the door he turned and said ” Thanks again and if there is anything …I mean anything you need help in future ..you have my card .” He starred at the card he left on the coffee table.
