Akila Darkbrother: Book Two Of The Kasai Series - Chapter 4
Akila stood in front of the window, turning the locket around in her fingers. Outside, very few people roamed. The sky began getting dark again as the sun started to set. Akila stood there, her mind set on everything around her. Charles was sitting on the bed with his nose in a book that he found downstairs. Akila walked over to him and sat down. He looked up and smiled. She smiled back and leaned her head over to see the book. The cover, faded and hard to read, didn’t stand out.
“Charles, what’s that book about?” Akila asked him.
“It’s just full of random facts about nature,” he said. He closed his book and set it beside himself. He looked at Akila and said, ” You wanna go down to the pub?”
“Sure,” She replied.
Downstairs, the pub still sat empty. They sat down at a booth on the left and split the water Akila had earlier into two cups. They raised their glasses, and each drank their entire cup in one gulp. They slammed their cups on the table and laughed.
“Hey, Charles you still haven’t take your cloak off yet,” Akila said.
“Oh, yeah. I forgot about it.” He replied. He untied the string and let the cloak fall. He was only wearing a blue button-up shirt and white dress pants. Akila could see his wings that were slightly bigger than her own. She stared at him. “Umm, Akila. You okay?”
Akila realized her eyes stared, “Yeah, yeah, I’m fine. It’s just nice to see someone who looks like me…”
Charles laughed. He grabbed the bottle and filled their cups up again. They sat, talking and laughing for hours.
Now midnight, they had fallen asleep in the pub. Their heads were laying on the table. Suddenly Akila perked up, awake and feeling that something wasn’t right. She left the booth and looked out the window. She could see the pub owner leading a group of armed guards to the pub. Akila left the window and ran to Charles. She shook him with all her might. He lifted his head, “Akila, What is it?”
“We need to go! Now!” Akila said in hushed, but urgent tones.
“What?”
“Look!” She said as she pointed to the window. Charles stood up and looked out the window.
“We need to run!” He grabbed Akila’s hand and pulled her to the back of the pub. He found the door and opened it. They ran outside and didn’t stop until they were at least a few buildings from the pub. Charles still had Akila’s hand. He looked back and saw the guards walk into the pub. “Who are those people?” He questioned.
“Well Judging from the crests on their backs, they’re from the Kingdom of Miniro,” Akila answered.
“Isn’t that where you escaped from.”
“Yeah, they must be looking for me”
Charles had a tighter grip on her hand, “Then we need to leave this town, now!” He started running, pulling Akila behind him. She could see his wings beating together to lift them off the ground.
“Charles don’t try to fly. If you do they will see us.” Akila warned him. Charles ignored her and continued. He had lifted off the ground with her in his grasp. “Charles!” Akila looked down and saw the guards looking up at them. One of them readied a bow. He released and Akila felt a stabbing pain in her back. “Ahh!”
” Akila!”
Charles dropped to the ground and helped her stand as he pulled the arrow out of Akila’s back. She winced and felt her blood run down her back. Behind, she could hear the running footsteps of the guards.
“Charles, I left my weapon at the pub. I might be able to summon it so you can use it,” Akila said
“Just don’t strain yourself.” He said.
“Akuis Domnh,” She said as she raised her hand. Immediately her scythe appeared in her hand. “Charles, here use this,” Akila said as she held it out to Charles. He took it and then helped her to sit against a tree. He stood in front of her, prepared for a fight. Akila started muttering a healing spell to heal her wound. The guards stood in front of them.

“Akila DarkBrother! Surrender or we will have to dispose of you by orders of the king of Miniro!” one of them yelled.
“You’ll have to go through me first!” yelled Charles. He ran at the guards, swinging Akila’s scythe.
Akila sat by the tree, almost healed, watching the fight. She saw Charles kill two of the guards with slashes to the stomach. The last guard overpowered Charles. He tossed the scythe to the side and pushed Charles to the ground. Akila finished healing herself and stood up. She ran to her scythe. She grabbed it as the guard was raising his sword to stab Charles in the chest. Akila lifted her scythe and cut his head clean off. His head fell to the side and his sword fell as well. Charles crawled backward and stood up, blood on his face.
“Charles, are you okay?” Akila asked him.
“Yeah, yeah. I’m good,” he replied.
“I think it’s safe to fly now.’
Charles nodded and shot off into the sky. Akila readied herself and went to the sky to meet him.
