- Chapter 919: T.D.O.N.B: S15C, Part IV - The Lightning Samurai
Martin and Hailwic ended up on a separate side of the city from most. There weren’t even any enemies around them, so they caught a brief breather as they circled around the plaza, staying far away from it, going left.
Nobuo, on the contrary, ended up with a bunch of enemies all around him. He also lost his flow, because his assault was interrupted. While escaping, there was no room to actually fight, because the heat was too strong, and it was spreading very damn fast.
He ended up going faster than the guardians, so he arrived at the safe spot before them, but it actually wasn’t good for him. He couldn’t keep creating chaos among the mages. Now they were united in one group, with him away, so they could put together a much stronger defensive line.
The samurai didn’t lose his cool, he attacked as soon as it was possible, vanishing with a burst of electricity hitting a few nearby buildings. A blue tiger leaped from the sky. The creature was made of lightning bolts, and it smashed into the spellcasters, but with no effects.
They had both magical and telekinetic protection already risen. The creature simply failed to pierce through them. Nobuo appeared a fraction of a second later in front of the row of mages. He slashes with katana that had several bubbles of crackling electricity along the blade.
The attack looked seemingly useless, but then the power erupted everywhere, creating this blue dome, and blasting everything around with discharges. The samurai vanished, retreating, hoping that he delivered at least some damage.
The dome broke, erupting with a pillar of lightning. When the air cleared itself from the little bit of dust, it smelled different.
What was left was a large circle of melted stone and in the middle the group of mages, who still were focusing to keep up their defenses. They clearly withstood the attack.
The question was how much it cost them compared to Nobuo.
He decided to check it, attacking yet again. This time a long electrical dragon appeared in the sky, diving down with its spiraling tail. It slammed into the barriers, announcing the appearance of the samurai, whose slash followed. He then evacuated, telling the electricity to do its thing.
The second dome appeared, striking all the rubles in the vicinity with the discharges before it burst into a pillar of lightning. This time, though, Nobuo didn’t wait for the dust to settle, he appeared once again right where the row of mages was supposed to be located. His katana was inside the says, but he was firmly holding the handle while leaning forward, about to pull the blade out.
The discharges were dancing on his hand. His eyes glowing blue with all the energy. The only thing visible from his face because of the mask covering it.
He took the sword out slashing. The electricity was so intense on the steel that it looked like the blade was completely blue, pulsating with force. This strike was so fast that even I, from before obtaining the ‘Evolutioner’ classes, wouldn’t be able to track it with just my eyes.
In a fraction of a second, there was no trace of Nobuo there, just this clacking cut in the reality itself, present in front of the mages, who just got revealed because the dust started to settle.
You could see only the silhouettes, but they were definitely there.
The cut was buzzing with energy from the start, but it rapidly intensified, before unleashing the power that seemed to be stored inside. A massive burst of lightning energy cut the whole plaza, trading the buildings on the other side, end inevitably passing through the mages. A loud noise of the barrier being shattered could be heard. This time there was not that much dust, at least not in that particular area. Only the little bit that was already settling.
The guardians’ state was revealed. All of them still standing, but clearly damaged by the electricity, still dancing on their bodies.
Nobuo noticed it, deciding to attack once more. He closed the distance rapidly, redying to strike. The lightning tiger was already up in the sky, reading itself to leap below, but suddenly the movement of the samurai changed. He got more sluggish, which only escalated, making him freeze a second later.
The creature up in the sky vanished.
Most of the mages seemed to be holding Nobuo with some kind of restraints. Either magical or even telekinetic. Few others clearly preparing strong attacks to take him down.
A sudden change, especially considering that up till recently they weren’t able to perform such a task. Their skills didn’t change. It was a new challenger who appeared on the battlefield. A bulky alien with a long polearm, very similar to a naginata, wearing black armor incrusted with gold started to slowly fly down from the sky.
His contribution to holding Nobuo in place seemed to be the reason behind the success of this tactic.
The samurai’s body was trembling with strength since he tried his best to overpower both the telekinetic abilities, as well as the magical ones. The fact that this was the only movement he was capable of indicating, that they had an overwhelming advantage against him, making his chances to free himself almost non-existent.
Despite the grim perspectives, Nobuo kept fighting with his all, mustering every little bit of power he could produce, while thinking of a way out.
He used some electricity, summoning lightning strikes, but they failed due to two mages dropping their grasp on him and deflecting the puny attack, before – once again – focusing their attention on him.
With the hum of energy, and the waves of colorful light appearing around the casters who were about to unleash their powers on the samurai, it seemed very much like the end of the journey for Nobuo.
Even facing his own end he didn’t close his eyes, looking directly at those who were about to end it all for him. There was no fear in his gaze – of that, I can assure you.
