Apocalypse, I Can Modify Infinitely - Chapter 36
“Chef Alma, what’s going on over there?” Chris asked as he looked at the time on his phone and the stairway that was flustered with zombies. He glanced at the students and saw Chef Alma standing by the window. He couldn’t help but ask.
“There’s an armored vehicle that arrived downstairs and it has killed dozens of zombies and now there’s a large wave of zombies chasing after it!” Chef Alma said as she was hearing Chris’ voice in the distance, Chef Alma’s voice was slightly louder.
“Armored vehicle that is killing zombies… What’s going on?” Chris was confused but he couldn’t go there to see it for himself yet, his gaze was wandering back and forth between his phone screen and the stairwell outside, carefully waiting for Alice’s message. He was afraid that he might not be able to react in time and missed the opportunity to open the electronic door when Alice needed him to. He had let go of his curiosity and thoughts for now.
On the second floor, Alice and the group was still trying to escape from the zombies.
“Let’s go!” Alice opened a zombie blockade and shouted urgently.
“These zombies came up from the first floor.” Beatrice replied. When she and her lecturer Alice were about to reach the stairs, they saw six zombies blocking the way in.
They saw the zombies as it was moving toward them from the first floor, there were at least ten of them altogether. The remaining zombies that they hadn’t killed yet also started to move in on them from the other side of the stairway.
The idiom “being dogged by bad luck.” was hitting them hard at that moment.
Roar! Roar! Roar! The zombies’ endless screams could be heard.
“We’re never going to make it.” Beatrice’s face had changed, it was the first time that she showed signs of her fear and worries. The zombies that Will had lured away had been back on their tail because of all the noise they made during the fight. The large numbers of zombies gave the impression of an ocean wave of the rotten corpses that were advancing toward them.
“D*mn it! There are too many zombies, I can’t hold them off any longer.” Gordon’s rugged face showed signs of distress. He wasn’t expecting a supposedly smooth sailing plan to upturn and become an impossible one. He was surrounded by zombies who were climbing up the stairs from the first to the second floor and even larger numbers, there were more than thirty zombies behind him. He had almost no chance of survival.
“It’s… It’s over, there are too many of them! We’re done! I don’t want to die!” The other two boys were so scared that their faces had turned pale and full of despair.
“We can’t just give up, let’s break through this side and go up to the third floor instead, let’s go!” Alice made a prompt decision to change her direction.
“Follow me!” As their lecturer, she was naturally the first to lead the path.
While all of this was happening, she also felt a trace of guilt toward Beatrice and other people. She was the one who led them down here, their lives were her responsibility. Alice was not going to give up, she wanted to find a way to eliminate the six remaining zombies at the stairwell. Compared to the wave of zombies approaching them from behind, the stairwell with only six zombies was her best shot for her to move past.
Boom! A loud noise was audible from a distance. She was sure that she heard it coming from outside the cafeteria. However, with her current circumstances and the lives that were at stake, she couldn’t afford to give a portion of her attention to trivial things.
“…” Then there was only silence. Beatrice didn’t say anything. She raised her left arm in front of her and clenched the knife in her right hand. That was her battle stance and she was ready for the fight.
“Gordon, if you can’t move fast, throw away all the food on you. You can come back later for the supplies.” Alice voiced her instruction to a distressed Gordon.
Gordon agreed and followed closely behind. The remaining two boys braced themselves and held their weapons in their hands.
…
“Wow! This vehicle is a beast!” Sandra said as she was sitting in the car witnessing the zombies that were being crushed one by one with the impact, she was impressed.
“If this is only a basic armored vehicle, I couldn’t imagine what the intermediate and the advanced version would be like.” She added.
As he heard Sandra’s comment, Crowe agreed. Compared to his armored vehicle, the zombies outside were more fragile than an infant and this was only the basic armored vehicle. In the future, if he were to complete more missions and was able to obtain more advanced modification cards, his vehicle would be more powerful. Perhaps even the thermal weapon couldn’t even do the vehicle any damage if he had the right modifications. While Crowe was thinking, he was still composed and fully in control of the situation. The zombies that rushed out of the cafeteria on the first floor were all crushed into pieces by his armored vehicle, leaving only the dead bodies behind.
If he wanted to enter the cafeteria to rescue the remaining survivors that were being pursued by an army of zombies, he would need to take precautions to ensure his safety and the survivors’ as well.
If he were to ignore the remaining zombies behind him and recklessly drove through the cafeteria on the first floor, by the time he reached the second floor the army of zombies would’ve been able to catch up. Even Crowe, who was already in possession of [Intermediate Combat Technique] skill book, wouldn’t be able to survive this. He was strong and capable but no one could have possibly fought off a hundred zombies at a time and lived.
As there was an old saying, “even an old master can be killed by an unseen strike from a random stranger.” Crowe knew he wasn’t an old master and those zombies were not just random human beings. He wouldn’t have recklessly risked himself to perform unreasonable moves for an impossible result. Of course, in the future Crowe could’ve obtained more rewards and strengthened his skills, then he wouldn’t need to worry about these things.
“We’re quite backed up, I’ll take the front,” Crowe announced.
In front of the road was the main entrance of the cafeteria, there was a space between the road and the entrance. He stepped on the accelerator and boosted the armored vehicle to its fastest possible speed, it moved through the area as fast as a thunderbolt.
“Everyone, hold on tight. It’ll get even more exciting after this.” Crowe calmly told them with a nonchalant expression.
The vehicle reached the empty lot in front, he made a turn and changed the direction of the vehicle. He was facing the waves of following zombies instead of being followed by them as before. As their vehicle was being approached by the zombies, they came in a large concentrated group. Crowe continued to push the limit of his vehicle to the highest speed possible as he was charging them. Under Crowe’s control, the armored vehicle quickly pierced through the horde of zombies crushing them into pulp.
This was not the end. Crowe wanted to eliminate as many zombies as possible. At the moment of impact, dozens of zombies perished immediately and their number suddenly decreased. Crowe kept going and in less than a minute he managed to wipe out more than a hundred of them.
“Stay in the vehicle, I need to go see what’s going on on the second floor, I’ll message Joan later when you guys can come up,” Crowe instructed the others after he parked the armored vehicle on the steps of the main cafeteria entrance. He opened the door and got out of the armored vehicle. Crowe held his alloy blade in his hand tightly and entered the cafeteria.
“Joan, are you very close to Crowe? You seem to be on good terms with him.” Sandra’s eyes were filled with curiosity, she asked Joan with a hint of emotion that went unnoticed..
