Chapter 39
“That’s terrifying! Did you see how that old lady just suddenly disappeared?”
“We did! Boss Gu is really something else. She always seems so friendly and smiling, but when it’s time to punish someone, she doesn’t hold back at all!”
“Well, that old lady started the trouble in the first place! If it were me, I’d have kicked her out too. What did Boss Gu do wrong?”
“I’m not saying Boss Gu did anything wrong! I just mean we should all follow the hotel rules from now on and not do anything to annoy people.”
“Right, this place is so good. If we get kicked out, we’ll never find anywhere as nice as this again.”
“Tomorrow I’m going to try going out to kill some zombies or find some valuable stuff. Do you guys want to come with me?”
“Sure, I’m almost out of points too.”
…
The task of recruiting five teacher guests had not yet been completed.
Besides Fu Sishu and Dou Mei, another new guest had arrived who used to teach middle school Chinese before the apocalypse.
There were still two spots left.
Gu Wanyin had originally planned to go to some bases to look for former teachers willing to come stay at the hotel, but on this day at noon, two more guests arrived.
They were a middle-aged couple, both looking quite disheveled and extremely thin. Their clothes were dirty and tattered, and the man walked with a noticeable limp.
After entering the hotel, the couple stood in a daze for quite a while until Xu Shi finally ushered them to the front desk.
“Hello, would you like to check in? Please take a look at our hotel rules first.”
After carefully reading through the rules, they asked incredulously, “Can this place really keep running? What if zombies get in? What about earthquakes?”
Xu Shi patiently explained about the hotel once again.
The couple was stunned for a while, then hurriedly said they wanted to check in.
They didn’t have any Crystal Cores on them, but fortunately, the woman was wearing a ring, and the man had a watch.
Although the watch no longer worked, the man said it was a birthday gift from their daughter, so he had never been able to part with it.
But now… they had finally found such a safe place, so they might as well use the watch to exchange for points.
They had been separated from their daughter while fleeing earlier.
Now, they just had to stay alive in order to reunite with her someday.
The woman’s ring was diamond, and not small, exchanging for 120 points. The man’s watch exchanged for 70 points.
As they were checking in, Gu Wanyin came out.
She was about to head out to look for former teachers.
Unexpectedly, at that moment, the system’s voice suddenly rang out in her mind.
“Ding! Congratulations, host. Task completed. Rewards unlocked: Rooms 501-505; Rooms 401-405 upgraded once; Second elevator unlocked; Supermarket unlocked; Hamburger and fried chicken restaurant unlocked, with unlimited menu items available.”
Gu Wanyin was surprised.
The task was completed?
Suddenly realizing something, she asked the couple, “Hello, I’m the owner of this hotel. If you don’t mind me asking, what were your occupations before the apocalypse?”
The couple exchanged glances, and although they didn’t know why Gu Wanyin was asking, the woman replied, “I was an elementary school teacher, and he was a middle school teacher.”
So that was it!
With this, her task was complete!
Gu Wanyin was very pleased.
However, since she had already decided to go out, she still planned to take a trip outside and promote the hotel some more.
Gu Wanyin left the hotel and got in her car, when she suddenly thought of something and asked, “System, even though we now have five guests who were teachers before the apocalypse, what if they check out and leave in the future?”
“Then you’ll recruit new ones when needed,” the system said. “The task only required recruiting guests, it didn’t specify they had to extend their stay. Don’t worry about it, host.”
“Oh, I see.”
But thinking about it, in this apocalyptic world, with a hotel like this, anyone who has stayed here probably wouldn’t want to leave. They’d surely find ways to exchange things for points to keep staying here.
At least for now, there hadn’t been any guests who voluntarily checked out and left.
So, Gu Wanyin happily hummed a tune as she drove away.
…
The newly arrived couple was named Dong Chengyi and Ruan Ruman.
They were staying in rooms 408 and 409 respectively.
Of course, unlike the previous guest Lin Ru, even though they were married, they each had their own room, and neither found anything odd about this arrangement.
After all, it was the apocalypse! Having a safe, clean place to stay was already a huge blessing. Who would quibble over whether a married couple could share a room?
After checking out their rooms, remembering what Xu Shi said about being able to buy food, they came to the cafeteria.
Not daring to spend too many points, they each bought a plate of egg fried rice.
As they were eating, Ruan Ruman suddenly burst into tears.
“What’s wrong? Why are you crying?” Dong Chengyi asked.
“If only our daughter could find a place like this too, where she could eat a hot meal,” Ruan Ruman said through her tears. “We’ve been separated for a year now. I don’t know how she’s doing, if she’s even still alive…”
Over the past year, they had faced countless hardships, but always gritted their teeth and persevered.
Because they always held onto hope, hope that they would see their daughter again.
At the mention of this, Dong Chengyi’s eyes also reddened.
“Yue must still be alive…” he said, his voice trembling. “She may not be outgoing, but she’s always been clever. She’ll definitely survive. Who knows, maybe she’ll even come to this hotel someday!”
Ruan Ruman wiped her tears and smiled bitterly. “How could we be that lucky?”
Just then, they heard the voices of two young women.
It was Dong Yue and Zhuang Xiaoxia coming to eat.
“I heard them say there’s a company not far from the hotel with lots of stuff inside!” Zhuang Xiaoxia was saying. “Things like books, clocks, computer mice and keyboards! We could go get some and exchange them for points. We might not get many points, but it’s better than nothing!”
After the apocalypse, the things left in offices had become junk, and no one would take them.
No one had imagined that a hotel would suddenly appear where you could exchange items for points.
“Sounds good! But I remember we had an earthquake here before. That company building didn’t collapse?” Dong Yue asked.
“The earthquake we had here wasn’t actually that big. A lot of buildings didn’t fall.”
“Oh, I see. What are you eating today?”
“Let me see…”
Hearing one of the girls’ voices, Dong Chengyi froze for a moment, then instinctively turned to look.
With just one glance, he was stunned.
One of the two girls who had just walked in… wasn’t she Dong Yue, the daughter they had been desperately searching for?
