Army of True Salvation - Chapter 13:Enjoy the Little Things
They got what they needed on the last minute and they were now all in front of the door.
There were five zombies outside. Sheloah looked at Sir Jim and he just smiled at her which made Sheloah roll her eyes at him.
They still did not find their Math teacher trustworthy. Something about him seemed suspicious. It didn’t make them feel comfortable but they had no choice but to “trust” him for the moment.
Tyler held the doorknob but wasn’t able to open it when suddenly one zombie banged his head on the door’s glass which surprised everyone. Blood splattered on the glass but the zombie wasn’t successful on breaking it. They all thought that if the zombie was sane, he would’ve not enjoyed that strong impact at all!
“Once Tyler opens the door, we all attack,” Sheloah said then all of them nodded.
Tyler slowly opened the door. Josh, Veon and Sir Jim instinctively went in front Sheloah for her protection. She rolled her eyes at their backs as the boys treated her like a little girl or a princess in need of protection. She squeezed herself in the middle and readied herself for attack.
‘I came here on my own accord and they still think I need protection?’ Sheloah inwardly thought to herself.
Tyler now opened the door and the moment he did, Veon attacked the nearest zombie with his weapon and he ran to his next target. Sir Jim hit a zombie on the head with the use of his axe and the zombie’s blood splattered on his clothes. Sheloah was once more surprised and her hemophobia attacked once more. She looked back to avoid the bloody scene in front of her.
But the moment she looked back, there was a zombie right behind her! She shook her fear away as she held her weapon tight and hit the zombie hard on the head. The zombie stumbled on the ground and she took the chance to hit the zombie one more time, making sure that the zombie was indeed dead.
She was kind of grossed out but she felt a little relieved to know that she was about to control her hemophobia. Sheloah controlled her fear at the last minute the moment she attacked the zombie. Soon, she will get used to it.
Sheloah looked at what was happening around her. Josh took out his weapon from one zombie as Tyler picked up his stick from the ground. As for Veon, he just stood, waiting for everyone to settle themselves. Sir Jim removed his axe from the zombie’s shoulder. The battle ended.
Sir Jim looked at them. “We will proceed to the rooftop, right?” The students nodded as their answer. “Let’s go,” he said and Sir Jim, Tyler and Josh went up, with Veon and Sheloah following slowly.
“I know what you’re thinking, Sheloah,” Veon said and she looked at him. Sheloah knew that Veon knew her very well so she just spoke her mind.
“I just find it suspicious… Sir said he did hit and run but won’t the axe get stuck on the zombie’s body and won’t you need speed and force to remove it before attacking the next target,” she whispered to Veon as they were making their way towards the rooftop.
“That’s what I was thinking, too,” Veon agreed and he continued to speak. “And another thing… if it’s hit and run, he should be covered in blood by now, but he was clean when we saw him in the home economics room. The only thing bloody was his axe,” he added which made Sir Jim more suspicious.
Sir Jim was really mysterious. He was the kind of teacher who would be friends with his students because of his friendly personality and now that the zombie apocalypse happened, it was like he was a person full of secrets or uncertainty.
He was rash. Rash in a way when Tyler opened the door, he threw a knife which almost killed him. It was like he was defensive about something; like he was hiding something from them. He didn’t even answer his students’ questions and he decided on joining them?
Will they really trust him?
They safely arrived on the rooftop. They noticed now that almost all zombies were not present in their location. If the zombies were now on the covered court, maybe it would make their plan on escaping the school difficult since the covered court was right next to the school’s exit.
Their classmates were surprised when they saw Sir Jim with them. A lot of students came to Sir Jim and asked him to tell them stories of how they met Sheloah and the others. While they were busy talking, Sheloah called Edward, Ace, and Dean’s attention and gave them the bag where they kept possible weapons.
Sheloah was rummaging inside the bag when suddenly she got curious as to why she found a fork inside. She couldn’t help but smile slightly when she took it out of the bag. “Why is there a fork inside,” she asked and the boys in front of her started chuckling.
“Using it as daggers to attack zombies,” Edward said and they laughed at the joke.
Dean got the bag from Sheloah and he laughed when he took out a spoon. “With matching spoons. As last resorts, we could eat zombies as meals if there are no resources left,” he added which made them laugh more and now some of their classmates who heard their conversation laughed with them.
They looked at Ace and they saw him swinging a frying pan like a bat; like he was playing baseball. He stopped when he noticed that there were now people watching him.
“What? I just saw this frying pan in the bag. Didn’t you guys just go there? Why laugh at me when you were the ones who got these items,” he said then they looked at Tyler and Josh.
“We were panicking. We just grabbed whatever we could,” Josh answered and now the class laughed at the “possible weapons” they brought for the class.
The crowd erupted in a loud laughter the moment Tyler brought out a can opener from the bag. Sheloah smiled as she remembered the line of the movie, Zombieland.
Enjoy the little things.
Sheloah suddenly stopped laughing when she felt her phone buzz. The moment she picked up her phone, everyone in class stopped laughing and became serious as well. She signaled to excuse herself as she walked away from the crowd. It was her uncle calling.
“Tito,” she greeted him.
“We’re on our way,” he answered and from the call, Sheloah could hear that there were bumps. Presumably, his uncle just hitting the zombies along the way.
“Okay. We will go to SM soon. By the time you get here, catch up with us,” Sheloah said and she looked at Sir Jim. “Our teacher, Sir Jim will go with you. You need backup,” she added as she leaned on the wall behind her.
“Okay,” his uncle said as he hung up the call. Sheloah kept her phone and she approached Tyler, Josh and Veon.
“My uncle is on his way here. We need to move to get the resources we need in SM. I’ll tell Sir Jim that he will go with my uncle. After he escorts my family here, both of them will catch up to us in SM. They will help in handling the resources. Is that okay?” They looked at Sheloah and they nodded slowly, like they seemed to doubt her plan this time.
“I don’t know about this plan, but this is all we got now. Let’s just pull it off as we go,” Veon said and she just nodded at him.
Sir Jim approached them. “I told the students to contact their parents to ask their families to go here as well. I will be accompanying them, too. I will do what I can before I join you guys,” he said and Sheloah was taken aback by their teacher’s initiative so she just nodded.
“Thank you.” She just thanked him and Sir Jim fished out his phone from his pocket.
“Give me all your numbers for contact,” he said and they all exchanged numbers.
“We’ll go now,” Sheloah said and Sir Jim nodded.
“Take care.” He bid them farewell as the students made their way towards the rooftop’s exit, Sir Jim’s eyes darkening.
