Army of True Salvation - Chapter 168:Before He Dies
They already entered the building and noticed that inside the airport, there were also a lot of zombies.
The pilot, together with Shannara came back with the things needed for the plane. “Our time is running. Let’s go,” the pilot said then everyone ran, with him leading the group.
“Protect the pilot at all costs,” Kreiss said then he suddenly stopped in his tracks, making everyone stop as well.
Sheloah looked at him, worried. “Kreiss?”
“All of you have to go,” Kreiss said then everyone looked at him worriedly.
“What are you saying? You can’t be left behind,” Isobel said then Tyler suddenly shouted.
“Hurry up! Shannara and I can’t attack any longer!”
Veon was about to approach Kreiss when suddenly, he was pushed away by him, making Veon sit on the ground.
“What the—”
“Leave me now!”
The moment he shouted, Shannara, Tyler, and Jun stopped attacking zombies and looked at Kreiss.
“What’s wrong with you,” Shannara asked. “We’re in this together and suddenly you do this?”
“Shannara—” Kreiss was interrupted when Shannara shouted at him.
“I thought you’re now part of the army! Why stop now!?”
Shannara was clearly frustrated with him and Kreiss went silent for half a minute before he spoke again.
“I’ll just hold the group down. You’ve been protecting me when I couldn’t even attack—much more run,” he said then everyone turned angry with what he said next.
“I’ll have to stay behind and be bait.”
“Sheloah, if he wanted this, then there’s nothing we can do.”
The others who were around were clearly saddened by the decision Kreiss made for everyone. They wanted to force him out of his decision… but knowing how Kreiss is headstrong about his decision, it would be impossible for them to convince him.
Sheloah couldn’t control her tears as she gave Kreiss one last hug. “Why’d you have to,” she whispered in his ear and Kreiss just let out a sad smile.
“For everyone’s sake… and for you,” he said then he kissed Sheloah’s forehead.
“Good bye.”
Veon looked at the two bidding farewell to each other. No matter how Kreiss and him treated each other, they still treated each other as friends and comrades.
Sheloah returned to Veon’s side and everyone looked at Kreiss one last time before they left them alone.
They saw him off before he dies…
They all continued running and looked back for a few seconds to look at Kreiss. He shouted, making every zombie look and come at his direction. Right now, he looked like he bathed in blood. And he really did his best in distracting the zombies for them to escape.
Everyone did their best in holding back their tears, too. They have to carry on or else Kreiss’ sacrifice would be in vain.
