Army of True Salvation - Chapter 195:My Uncle's Gone, Too?
The fog was starting to disappear, making their surroundings clearer than earlier. There were already some zombies showing up around them and they noticed that they were surrounded. Everyone was in the middle of the circle, as if the zombies were just waiting for an opportunity to attack.
Do they have intelligence?
‘Things got more intense…’
Some of the students already started showing their nervousness and fear. They were trying their best not to shout or to move as they held their weapons tightly.
“Everyone, on my cue. Everyone would have to crouch down for cover,” Erick said, enough for them to hear since the students and parents were gathered around.
Erick slowly reached for something in his pouch and John, who’s an ex-military, noticed what he was holding.
A smoke grenade.
Erick looked for an opening and in just one nod, everyone understood what he meant. Everyone crouched down as Erick quickly threw the smoke grenade at an open space near them, enough to not get the others harmed.
What Erick told them the other night was true. Sometimes, defense is the best offense. In this situation, attacking the enemies is a no-go.
When smoke already formed, Erick shouted, giving his next instruction.
“Everyone, run! Join your groups and head out!”
Everyone fumbled for balance as they stood up quickly to escape. Some of them were bumping into zombies and that scared them but they had to focus in order for them to be alive.
There were already screams heard and this made Sheloah scared. She noticed that not everyone was quick enough to escape and this made her heart ache.
Sheloah was running as fast as she could when suddenly, she felt someone hold her wrist.
“Ah!”
Sheloah screamed and was about to do a high kick when suddenly, Veon blocked it and looked at the girl, surprised of her physical prowess.
“Sheloah, it’s me. Veon!”
‘Since when did this girl learn do a high kick?’
Sheloah sighed and looked at him, slightly annoyed.
“You scared me!”
Suddenly, Kreiss approached them.
“What are you guys doing!? Let’s go!” Kreiss held Sheloah’s hand and he looked at Veon. “Go to your team. Sheloah and I are about to do our roles,” he said, sounding serious and Veon looked at Sheloah, feeling conflicted.
“Veon, listen to Kreiss,” she said and this made the boy sigh.
“Kreiss, I leave her in your care,” Veon said and Kreiss scoffed.
“Goes without saying.”
The three of them dispersed as they ran going to their respective groups. Kreiss let go of Sheloah’s hand the moment he was assured that she was coping up.
Sheloah looked around and noticed that most of them were running in the routes indicated in the map. She also noticed that there were some students being bitten by the zombies. The girl had the urge to rescue them but he was stopped by Kreiss.
“I may sound harsh, but we have to leave them behind. We have no choice.”
Sheloah was teary-eyed. Her heart ached as she saw from time to time how some of her classmates suffered. Most of them weren’t even with their groups anymore and just ran to the routes going to the meeting place.
Kreiss noticed that the path in front of them was blocked so he quickly climbed up to one car, pulling Sheloah behind him. He started looking for an alternative path and saw that the road to their west was clear of obstructions.
“Focus, princess,” he said as she held Sheloah’s hand, leading her as he ran going to the path where there aren’t much cars, but filled with zombies that they could attack.
“Kreiss, are you sure about this,” Sheloah asked as she noticed where they were heading and saw that there were zombies around.
“Yes. Use your gun as we run. I’ll lead us out,” he said and Sheloah nodded, holding her emergency gun.
Kreiss ran, holding Sheloah’s hand as the girl shot accurately the zombies around them. Sheloah only prioritized shooting the zombies near them and ignored the zombies far from them.
The building of the meeting place came to vision and the two sighed in relief. They also saw some of their comrades waiting on top of a truck that was toppled down during car crash.
The two climbed up with the help of the others and they watched the chaos that was unfolding in front of them as they wait for the others to come.
Seeing this, Sheloah cried as she hid her face on Kreiss’ shoulder. Kreiss put his arm around her, comforting her.
The sniper team arrived on top of the truck and took their positions.
“Shoot the zombies to help the others escape,” John ordered Dannie and Ashley and they did as they were told.
The three of them started shooting zombies as accurately and as quickly as they can when suddenly, Dannie noticed something from her scope.
“Sir Erick?”
Sheloah looked and noticed that Erick was injured and was being treated by their class adviser. Once he was treated, the two of them ran and Kreiss and Sheloah helped them up.
When the two were up with them, she noticed that John and Erick were here… but not her uncle.
Sheloah looked at them, worried. “Where’s my uncle?”
The two suddenly looked panicked when they noticed that he was not around.
‘No… don’t tell me my uncle’s gone, too?’
Sheloah was about to cry when suddenly she heard a familiar voice from below.
“Help me up!”
Sheloah heard Jun and quickly helped him up. Once he was up, she punched him on the chest and cried.
“What took you so long!?”
Her uncle hugged her niece and whispered in her ear.
“I’m sorry. The others died and only you, me, and my eldest son are alive. I couldn’t protect the others…”
When Sheloah heard this, she cried on her uncle’s chest and Jun was trying his best to be strong for his niece. They hugged each other tight as they realized that they are the only family left.
