- Book 2: Chapter 14: Not a Chapter: Patreon Notice and FAQs
Hey.
Sorry, not a chapter. Normally I wouldn’t do this type of thing, but I left you all on a bit of a cliff-hanger, and I’ve got a LOT of comments and messages on discord asking me for advance chapters, so I figured you’d forgive me if I interrupted our regular schedule to give you some news.
Let’s to the bad news first. I am nowhere close to completing a map of Frenaria. I know a lot of people are disappointed by this and I promise to… Ok I’ll stop.
Onto the good news! My Patreon is set up now has two advance chapters on the $5 tier! https://www.patreon.com/MilesEnglish I’ll also be using it as a blog and a place to share some AI art I’ve made for Bog Standard, and that stuff will stay free, so it might still be something cool to check out even if you don’t feel like donating.
One thing I’d like to make clear is that I really appreciate each and every one of you! My biggest reward for writing this story is seeing so many of you enjoying and sharing the story. Having said that, money is very useful for a lot of things so I’m not going to say no to it. I’m determined to see Bog Standard through until it’s done (whenever that may be), but my ability to keep writing this story at a good pace is tied to whether I can justify it financially. Hence, the Patreon. Right now it’s two chapters ahead, and I’m hoping to bump that up to three chapters by the end of next week.
Let’s do some FAQs.
Q: What’s Brin’s Class going to be?
A: Part of the fun of the story is finding these things out when Brin experiences them! Having said that, I’ve had one Class in mind the entire time I’ve been writing this, it’s part of the original outline, and I won’t change it. This will no doubt disappoint some of you who have your heart set on something else, but hundreds of you have chimed in with opinions or ideas and I can’t choose them all. I really appreciate your comments and enthusiasm!
Q: How much of a backlog do you still have left before you go to once-a-week chapters?
A: I ran out of backlog two weeks ago. This story exploded far beyond my wildest expectations, so I dug deep and did everything I could to keep up the MWF posting schedule. This won’t last forever, not if I want to keep up the current quality. I’m not a fast writer, and I’ve gone through multiple rounds of editing for each and every word you’ve read in this story. I nearly drove myself crazy writing the two extra chapters for Patreon. I’m doing this now out of gratitude, and I’ll keep it going as long as I can, but at some point I’ll have to slow down a bit. Expect me to take holidays off, to take vacations, and expect a week break in between books.
Q: How does (this one specific part of the magic system) work?
A: Part of the fun of the story is finding these things out when Brin experiences them! 😉 Honestly though, I could answer some of these questions, but I think you’d rather I write more chapters.
Q: When is Brin going to get his Class?
A: Soon! Honestly, in my first outline he would’ve already had it, but one of the things I wanted to do with this project was take my time, be disciplined, and tell every single part of the story that needs to be told, when it needs to be told. There was a lot of story that needed to happen with Brin as a child, and I think you’ll be pleased with how it turns out.
Q: How in the world is your first RoyalRoad story doing so well so quickly?!
A: I don’t know if I can really answer this, since it’s done absolute gangbusters. I have nothing but gratitude. But while this is my first RoyalRoad story, this isn’t the first novel I ever wrote. It’s the fifth. My first novel isn’t anywhere right now, but I may give it away to Patrons at some point. The other three are on amazon, starting with ‘In another world, I must defeat the demon king.’ Point is, I’ve been learning how to write for years now, and honestly I’m still learning. Writing is difficult to learn, so if you’re here in the trenches with me me, all I can say is keep on truckin!
Ok, this is Miles, signing off. I’ll be back here Monday at the usual time, with the first chapter of Part 3.
