When Lucille finally ended the call, Jess returned Noah’s phone to him. She fluffed up her pillow before laying down back to bed.
“Baby, I’ll be back to Palo Alto tomorrow evening.”
Jess turned her head to face Noah. “Your daughter is waiting for you.”
He stared at her eyes and took her hands to his hands. “Jess, Am I forgiven?”
“No.”
Noah was stunned by her curt answer. “B-but…”
“It’s easy to say I forgive you, Noah. However, it won’t take away the hurt that I’m feeling. The disappointment. But I am not angry with you –” she quickly added.
“If you aren’t angry with me then why –”
“Because the cause of our problem doesn’t have a solution yet. You said you are seeing a therapist but when a certain problem arises your action was still to have me investigated instead of coming to me—to ask me. I don’t blame you because there is a valid reason for your action, however, it’s not an excuse. Because I am not your ex-wife.”
“What can I do to earn your forgiveness?” He asked, staring deeply into her eyes.
“Time. I need time, Noah. I need time to process everything. You also need time to work on your issues.”
He took a deep breath. He brought her hands to his lips and murmured. “I’ll do my best. Promise, I’ll do my very best.”
“I know you’ll do. And I will also work on the negative emotions in my heart. It’s not easy to let things go. Because even when I understand your motives behind your action, it didn’t stop the hurt. Even when I’m not angry, I am still disappointed. Even when I love you, I know it’s not enough to see us through. Love isn’t enough to make a relationship, Noah. And you know that.”
He nodded. “Scoot over,” he said, climbing to her bed.
“Don’t you have work?”
“Do you think I would rather spend my time at work than spend it with you?” He lifted her head and put his arm under.
Jess rolled her eyes but moved closer to the inside of his arms. Who is she kidding? She would miss Noah. And right now, she also wanted to be close with him. She draped her arms over his shoulder and buried her face on the crook of his neck, inhaling his scent in the process.
Noah’s arms circled around her frame. His hands started rubbing her back.
“Noah,” she called his name in a small voice.
“Yes, baby?”
“Hum me the song.”
He chuckled. “You aren’t going to be tired of that song, are you?”
“No,” she mumbled. Her voice sounded muffled because she spoke against his neck. When Noah started humming the Merry Go Round of Life, Jess closed her eyes.
“You know, Lucille is learning the piano piece of this song. When you come home, let’s have dinner and you can ask her to play you this song.”
Jess heaved a deep sigh and tightened her arms around Noah’s shoulders. Her chest was almost plastered on his chest. What Noah said made her eyes sting. She hasn’t told Noah everything and she wasn’t sure if she can now fully commit to being part of Lucille’s life.
She and Noah are now officially dating but with the status of their relationship, she wasn’t sure if it was sturdy enough to withstand the test of white lies and former scars. She truly hopes so. Because just like what she told Ellise, she’s in love with Noah. And the feelings she has for Noah are not the kind that would disappear because of some secrets, mistakes, or lies.
She’s sure now that she wanted Noah in her life. And what she learned from the toxic relationship her father has with the many women in his life, was, love is a work in progress.
And she’s committed to working out his relationship with Noah. Hurt, disappointment, and all. She just hopes he could meet her in the middle.
Noah can feel the thumping of Jess’s heart next to his. Her soft breath was fanning on the sensitive skin of his neck. Her natural scent permeated his nose. Her soft curls were tickling his face. He would miss her like crazy once he left.
And it would drive him insane knowing that Jess was hurt with his action and she wasn’t over it yet. It’s not surprising though. It wasn’t easy to get over the fact that he didn’t trust her enough and he thought she would be just like Nicole—betraying him. In the end, it was he who betrayed and hurt her.
He pressed a kiss on the top of her head and muttered a silent promise to himself. He would take care of everything. Make things right to keep her and he would do everything in his power to soothe the hurt she has in her heart because of what he did.
He was actually surprised at how Jess handled things. He was ready to face Jess’s anger. He didn’t expect her to be so calm, collected, and rational. At first, he was scared shitless. Women who are calm are actually scarier than women who are vocal with their anger.
Women who are quiet and collected are a force to be reckoned with. They are like a deep mysterious ocean. On the surface, they are calm yet underneath they are whirling ideas on how to take revenge or worse—leave and move on.
And that’s the reason why Noah has all the intention to keep the promise he just made to himself. He now knows that Jess wasn’t the temperamental type of woman when she was angry. She’s one the scariest species of all women. The kind that doesn’t take bullshit from their man.
She was the type that would leave him in a heartbeat if he didn’t get his act together.
He smiled when he heard Jess snoring softly. She clearly told him she was disappointed and hurt by him, yet she slept soundly in his arms—a frightening woman indeed.
