With Noah still in China, Lucille being busy with her exams, and she being tied down at the lab with Luke, the days flew past. Before she knew it, she woke up and it’s already the weekend.
She glanced at the balcony at the other side of the room and thought of how good the morning sun would be on her skin, however, she was feeling lazy. She doesn’t want to get up and go to the balcony. She simply wants to lie down.
She rolled to her side and grabbed the pillows next to hers. When she buried her face on them, she didn’t smell Noah’s scent and realized that Noah hadn’t been sleeping in her apartment. She already changed her beddings and Noah’s smell wasn’t on his pillow anymore.
She shut her eyes tightly and tried to imagine Noah being next to her in bed. She hasn’t even progressed yet with her imagination when she got startled by her phone ringing. Her eyes flew open, clicking her tongue, she rolled back to her side and grabbed her phone laying on the bed side table.
“Hello,” she said, grumpily.
“Little Miss Jessie, sorry for the disturbance but I need you in the lab.” Luke’s apologetic tone of voice was heard on the other end of the line.
She exhaled a deep sigh. ‘Goodbye, quiet weekend.’ She pushed herself up from the bed. “Do I have time to take a bath before you need me in the lab?”
“A quick shower is preferred.” He replied with loud clanging in the background, followed by loud cursing.
“I’ll be there as soon as I can.” Jess dropped the call and headed to the bathroom to at least have a quick shower.

“Luke!” She called him as she entered the lab. She closed the metal door behind her and trod to the further end of the room. “Luke? Are you there?” She was answered by the blinking fluorescent light on the ceiling. The lab is naturally chilly but the silence was eerie.
She never liked working in the lab in the morning. Hated it actually. Not only because she doesn’t like getting up early in the morning but also because she feels like her brain is more awake at night.
She went directly to her workstation and found it in the same state that she left it at night. Next, she went to Luke’s table and discovered it in the same disarray that was Luke. She grimaced on how he could still find things he needed with how messy his table was.
She creased her brows and was about to look for Luke when he appeared, sweating profusely. He wasn’t wearing his lab coat. He’s on his usual grab when strolling. White shirt paired with jeans. Her brow shot up higher in wonder.
“What’s the matter?”
“Some of the data was off. I needed to redo most of them.” He replied without looking at her. He is carrying a whole tray of test tubes and he’s clearly panicking. It’s so unlike him to panic and look unkempt.
Luke panicked but he kept his appearance. She exhaled and grabbed the tablet and checked the data of their research that sent Luke into panic. She furrowed her eyebrows while reading the data. It is off but it’s not something unusual. In the lab, things like this happen often and in the past this kind of mishap doesn’t ruffle Luke’s feathers.
“Hey, do you mind putting those down first?.” She called at him who was already lining all the test tubes on the steel table. “I have a question about this number.” She tapped the tablet screen.
She watched Luke’s looked of panic.
“Did you see something else?” He asked. His eyes were shaking in panic.
“Hmm,” she muttered, nodding.
Luke dropped what he was doing and walked briskly to her side. “What is it?” His voice was heavy with anxiety. His shoulders were taunt and deep lines adorning his forehead.
When Luke stood next to her, he craned his neck to look at the screen of the table. When he bent down a little, she grabbed his elbow and pressed a kiss on his cheek. “Lukey, it’s not something that we can’t do. It’s not our first research and you know that this thing can happen all the time.”
She heard him exhale a deep breath and his shoulders slumped. She caressed his arm, and craned her neck to meet his worried eyes. “Relax, will you?” She gently said, smiling.
Luke grabbed her into a bear hug. “Sorry, Little Miss Jessie. I’m such a mess and I’m dragging you with me.”
“I’m a member of your research team. This is something that we go through together. Besides, I don’t really have a choice since you’re my friend on top of being my head researcher, do I?”
“Thank you.” He let her go and leaned his hips against his work table. “I came in to check what we did yesterday. I was just thinking of checking stuff and before I knew it, I’m already overcome with anxiety.”
She rubbed his back as she listened to him, leaning to his side.
“I suddenly felt scared of failing…” He chuckled wryly. He looked at her and dropped a kiss on top of her head. “Also, Oliver and I were over.” His voice trembled. “We aren’t meant from the start…I know that much but…”
He sobbed and Jess snaked her arms around his waist and let him cry as he rested his chin on top of her head.
“There wasn’t us from the start. It just felt so good to finally have someone that I can talk about work and understand how things are…not to mention that the sex was also good.”
She felt him grinning and she slapped his back. “You said you didn’t!”
“Little Miss Jessie, how can you be so naive?”
