‘Rob and Aurora, now promise me that you won’t tell daddy that we were here’ Hazel said as she bend over to the kids standing before her as they came outside the company.

‘Why?’ Aurora asked tilting her head sideways looking at Hazel.

‘Apparently because he’ll kill me’ she murmured as she looked at the sweet looking child in front of her who had no clue about the danger they just escaped from.

‘Because he’ll be angry’ she told managing to swallow up the other part of the reason.

‘Why are we here if daddy doesn’t like it?’ Rob asked innocently.

‘You see, the man who was inside was troubling daddy and we came here to tell him not to anymore but daddy didn’t want me to get involved and if he comes to know we came here he’ll be upset so you both should keep it a secret for me’ she explained pleading them in a low voice.

‘Ok’ they both promised nodding pleasantly at her.

‘Hazel?’ a voice called out as she was still talking to the kids outside Grayson automobiles.

‘William?’ she asked in doubt as she turned to look up at the person who called out to her.

‘Ms. White, what are you doing here?’ William asked walking over to her.

‘Hi..! I was here for business. What are you doing here?’ she asked in doubt as he was holding a bunch of files in one hand and his laptop in his other hand. It was evident that he was there for some business.

‘I work here! I am Mr. Grayson’s attorney’ he said introducing himself clearing her doubts.

‘You work for Grayson?’ she cried out in shock.

‘Yeah..? And why are you so shocked?’ he asked confused by her reaction.

‘No…I thought you still worked where Charlotte worked before taking over her family’s business’ she replied managing to hide away her shock.

‘I did! But I quit way before she did’ he answered looking over to the kids standing behind her.

‘Are those kids with you?’ he asked looking over at them.

‘Yeah’ she answered signaling them to come to her side.

‘Wait..! Are they your kids?’ he asked confused.

‘Yes, they are!’ she answered smiling.

‘But Charlotte never mentioned about you having kids not even when you and my brother were kinda going out’ he told her not understanding how he didn’t know about this earlier.

‘Oh wait! Are they Chris’ kids?’ he asked recalling suddenly.

‘No Mr. Anderson! They are both mine and Chris’ kids’ she corrected smiling politely at him.

‘I get it! You guys are together now. Anyways I gotta go! Mr. Grayson said it was an emergency’ he said smiling lightly and took his leave.

‘So he’s Grayson’s attorney! Interesting..!’ she told smiling to herself as she took the kids outside the company’s premises.

She pulled out her phone to book a cab when she heard a voice call out to her, making her freeze in fear;

‘Chris?’ she called out biting back her lips nervously as she turned to look at him standing next to his car staring daggers at her.

‘Is there something you would like to tell me?’ he asked as he opened the door for the kids to enter the car.

Just as Hazel was about to enter after the kids he closed the door and pulled her aside forcefully.

‘Care to Explain, Ms. White?’ he asked raising a brow raging with anger.

‘I just came here to meet Mr. Grayson’ she said trying to cover up the truth.

‘We aren’t leaving till you explain’ he said stubborn not buying her play.

‘Can we talk at home?’ she asked looking around, bothered by how the people kept staring at them in a weird way.

‘You better explain’ he said releasing her hand and walked towards his car.

Hazel got into the car and Chris drove home, silent the entire way back.

‘Kids go to your room’ he said as they entered the house.

‘Explain now’ he said siting down on the couch as the kids ran upstairs to their room.

‘Chris, I just went to tell him not to threaten you anymore’ she answered sitting next to him.

‘Really..? That’s it?’

‘Yup..!’ she answered not ready to look up at him.

‘That’s totally believable. Did he say okay?’ he asked in a calm tone but his reactions displayed a different question.

‘Well if my guess is right he won’t, for a few days’ he answered slowly still looking down at the carpet spread in the living room.

‘Few days..?’ he asked not understanding what she meant.

‘Yeah..!’

‘Why? I mean how?’ he asked still perplexed.

“Till Grayson figures out that all I did was fool him and nothing I said was true” she thought to herself as Chris kept looking at her for an explanation.

Though Chris was blazing in with anger he didn’t want to vent it out on Hazel right away. Was she about to get an earful? Eventually! But the comment Charlotte made back in his office really got him thinking.

‘No Chris! You don’t know Hazel’

Her words kept haunting him since then. The expression Charlotte wore when she spoke, it was a combination of pride and confidence. She didn’t seem to have even a percent of fear Chris was projecting. Hazel didn’t inform anyone about her plan to visit Grayson but yet Charlotte had utter confidence that she could handle it. He just didn’t get how Charlotte could be that calm even after knowing that Grayson could harm Hazel.

He understood Hazel and loved her even more but did he know everything about her?

And suddenly he wasn’t the only mystery here! Hazel proved to be a bigger mystery.

‘I asked him to’ she spoke out not able to think of any other answer at the moment.

She didn’t think Chris would find out about her going to meet Grayson. If she did, she would’ve definitely had some story ready by now to tell him but now she couldn’t come up with a lie at the moment that would seem to convince him so she decided to confuse him instead.

‘And he was okay with that?’ Chris asked getting irritated as she continued to lie.

‘Yes, he promised!’ she answered smiling brightly.

‘And you expect me to believe this crap?’ he asked shouting in anger standing up from the couch.

‘Stop screaming Chris!’ she replied still sitting on the couch indifferent to his behavior.

‘Do you even know what I was going through when I heard you entered Grayson’s office with the kids? Fine..! You had some plan but why the kids?’ he asked hoping she would explain the actual reason instead of coming up with some ridiculous excuses.

‘Are you angry because I involved your kids here?’ she asked looking up at him for the first time since their conversation started.

‘First of all they are our kids and next I am angry that all the three of you went’ he corrected.

‘I am allowed to take my kids anywhere, right?’ she asked standing up to face him.

‘……’

‘Chris, look! I am safe now and nothing really happened. So don’t worry! And since it bothers you so much hereafter I won’t go to meet him without your knowledge’ she promised seeing his tensed face.

She knew he was already so much tensed for the past few days and didn’t want to worry him more. If she tells anything now, it will only lead to chaos. She decided to reveal things once things have settled according to her plan.

She looked at Chris waiting for a reply but he was already lost into his own world.

‘So you are Christopher? Adam’s brother!’ a middle-aged man asked walking over to Chris, who was sitting at the couch devastated.

‘Yeah you are?’

‘I am Denzel Grayson. I was one of your brother’s business partners. And I am sorry for your loss, my deep condolences’ the man introduced expressing his concern but his face didn’t seem concerned at all.

‘You are ….Gra…Grayson?’ Chris asked looking up at him building up with rage.

‘Looks like you already know about me then I don’t have to stay for long’ Grayson said looking at Chris.

‘What are you doing here? And how dare you come here?’ Chris asked controlling his anger.

‘Calm down Mr. Finch! I just came to tell you that I didn’t expect your brother and sister-in-law to die this way’ Grayson answered in a lazy voice looking around the place.

‘You have no…’

‘Let me complete! I planned it to be more fatal but unfortunately it was framed as an accident’ Grayson said interrupting him turning serious.

‘How dare you?’ Chris yelled as he clenched his fists together in anger.

‘And I heard his kids escaped… this time. If your family messes around again, they won’t!’ he answered smirking as he walked away felling contended leaving Chris felling worse than he already was.

‘Chris? Chris?’ Hazel called out for the fifth time now.

‘You are not understanding how dangerous that guy is’ he said sitting down as he came back from his little flashback.

‘That’s because you never took the initiative to tell me’ she answered walking away not ready take it up anymore.

She had no idea what Chris was thinking but she knew that he wasn’t gonna tell her.

Chris stared blankly at her as she made her way to her room.

Back in college, he knew everything about her.

He knew a year could bring on a lot of changes, yet alone six years. He had to start putting in effort again because he knew apart from the fact that she loved him he knew nothing about her now. And there was only one who knew…

It was his turn to identify who his girl was or had been in the past six years.

‘Charlotte? I need to talk to you’ he said as Charlotte answered her phone.

‘Can’t..! I am busy’ came her straight away reply.

‘It’s for Hazel’ he answered quickly within she could hang up.

‘Dinner at my house, 7:00 p.m.’ she said hanging up.

‘And people wonder why I am afraid of her. If Hazel didn’t love me, she would do the honors of sending me to heaven’ he told shaking his head sighing over her resentment towards him.

‘What do you want to know about Hazel?’ Charlotte asked looking at Chris as they were seated in her dining room.

‘Did something happen to her over the past few years? You know something that changed her completely?’ he asked hoping to learn what happened few years back.

‘What happened to your detective team?’ she joked taking a sip of her wine.

‘I tried but couldn’t get any’ he answered not giving in to her jokes.

‘That’s how good she is’ she answered smiling to herself.

‘This, this smirk..! What does it mean?’ he asked recalling her expression.

‘It means you know nothing about her’ she answered sounding proud.

‘Valid point..! But at least I am not someone who hid my relationship from my best friend he said smiling at her.

His quick comeback caught her off guard, so she decided to focus back on the topic instead of firing insults at him.

‘Fine jumping back to the topic’ she said quickly diverting the topic.

‘Just tell me what happened?’ he asked in a serious tone.

‘Look Chris, you have no idea what she went through a few years back. We all were scared that it was the end but she didn’t lose hope. She faced it and everyone got to see a new side of Haze. But we were surprised how weak she became once you reentered our lives. She couldn’t think clearly and started jumping to all the worst case scenarios possible. The girl who was positive in all the hard circ.u.mstances life threw at her suddenly grew into a pessimist after a few minutes meeting you after six years’ she explained as he listened with utter concentration.

‘Wait! Did she face some kind of illness?’ he asked getting worried.

‘No fool! She had to face some pretty hard situations and believe me no one would want that’ she replied clearing off his doubts.

‘What kind of situation? And why didn’t she tell me anything?’ he asked growing curious as she continued building the suspense.

‘Go ask your future wife why she didn’t tell you but wait I think I might know the answer’ she said answering her own question.

‘Why?’ he asked waiting for her to continue.

‘Cause you never tell her anything’ she mocked fighting back the urge to laugh.

‘I have a reason’ he answered bluntly.

‘She does too! No one is short of reasons Chris! You should just be ready to face it’ Charlotte replied rolling at eyes after hearing his reply.

‘And everyone thinks that Hazel is your weakness but the truth is you are only one weakness if she hadn’t met you or maybe even moved on, my God! She would’ve been flawless. But life doesn’t work that way’ Charlotte added as Chris sat there analyzing her words.

‘Oh my..! Look you aren’t dumb anymore’ he teased laughing at her.

‘I never was’ she protested defending her. Chris was the only one brave enough to call her dumb to her face.

‘Yes you were and still is’ he yelled rushing out of the room quickly before she could hit him with something she grabs from the table, well it happened before so Chris was just being cautious this time.
