Chris And Hazel - Volume 1 Chapter 62
‘What do you mean by he’s not showing you the evidence?’ a voice cried out in shock.
‘He’s reluctant and stubborn. Even after I said it is an important defense from our side. He’s not willing to show me the evidence telling me that it isn’t needed anymore’ William answered in a dejected tone.
‘But William does that mean our plan failed?’
‘I am not sure yet. But if I keep on asking him to show me the evidence he’ll surely start to suspect, then I won’t be able to help you anymore’ he explained trying to show that his situation there was critical too.
‘Yeah, you are right! That would be another disadvantage for us then. So Edwin plan failed now what do we do?’
‘Yeah but don’t lose hope we still have our next plan, right?’ William said trying to stay positive there.
‘Yeah, thank god! But this evidence was supposed to play a big role in our next plan’
‘I know but we have no choice but take it to court’ William finally said arriving on a decision. There was no use of them worrying over the lost piece. Sure, both of them didn’t expect this plan to fail but it did and so they have to focus on things after this. Grayson could be brought down in other ways too but it wouldn’t stand strong against him.
‘Fine, I will ask them to sum up the other evidences we have on Grayson and take legal action’ the other person said accepting William’s plan.
‘Haze..?’ Chris called out staring blankly at her.
‘Chris! Why are you here?’ she asked quickly hiding away the phone.
‘Were you talking to someone?’ he asked suspicious of her moments.
‘No… I was just calling Char’ Hazel lied looking away.
‘Oh okay! Anyways I am going to meet Ed. We are planning to partner up for our upcoming project. I will be home for dinner’ he informed and walked away.
‘That was close’ Hazel heaved a sigh of relief as she looked at her phone to see whether William was still on the line or not.
‘Sorry William! It was Chris’ she apologized.
‘How is he? He doesn’t know about our plan, right?’ William asked after a short pause.
‘Not yet! But strangely he didn’t react much when he found out that Edwin took away the evidence. Did he also expect the same outcome like us?’ she asked as she recalled all the events from the previous day.
He didn’t look tensed or worried and didn’t talk much about it either. Hazel failed to read his mind, partly she even felt guilty for coming up with the plan to involve Edwin to help them find the evidence. But only that seemed like a solid plan at that time because neither of them had any idea about the drive. They just knew that it was there.
‘But we only wanted that to happen thinking that Grayson would give back the evidence to you and you yourself could turn it in against him’ she spoke out pushing away her other thoughts.
‘Yeah that was why we involved Edwin here so that he might lead you guys to that evidence but Chris was the one who finally got it’ William said as he still kept thinking of ways to get back the drive from Grayson.
When William told Grayson that it could help them in defense, Grayson told him that he didn’t see any need for them to use this evidence to save him after all it would be better for Grayson if no one spoke about his smuggling business in court so why will he want to hand it over to William in the first place?
When William noticed Edwin inside Grayson’s office the previous day, he was sure that their plan worked flawlessly and Edwin brought back the evidence to his boss and this was anticipated by both him and Hazel but their actual plan was different and they didn’t expect it to backfire in this way.
‘No, you are wrong! Actually Edwin helped a lot. He gave us a lot of clues which led us to find other evidences on Grayson, for a moment I almost believed that Edwin really jumped on our side. He was a natural but weirdly all the info he gave us were true, though if he wanted he could have led us astray’ Hazel replied elucidating all the things to William that happened when Edwin was with them.
William and Hazel made sure not to talk during the time because they knew if by chance someone finds out it will only bring them more trouble.
‘Are you saying he was actually helping you guys?’ William asked in a puzzled voice after listening to her narration.
‘Yeah, it’s true that he didn’t lead us to the actual evidence as expected but he did get us other useful information’ she answered looking out her window.
‘Persuade Chris to look into the things Edwin told you about and legally file a case against Grayson and maybe after getting the official notice Grayson might show me the evidence’ William suggested as he reached his driveway.
‘I will talk to Chris. Edwin was so quick to flee with the evidence that I didn’t have time to make a copy of it’ she said in a worried tone.
‘No use worrying over spilt milk. We will find a way’ William said disconnecting the call.
‘How could you play so calmly?’ Ed asked taking the phone away from Chris, who was immersed into the game world.
‘Hey! What do you want me to do then? Mourn over it?’ Chris asked annoyed trying to take back his phone.
‘How come you are so cool about it?’ Ed asked growing doubtful of Chris’ behavior.
He lost the only proper evidence he had against Grayson but right now all he’s worried about is about the game he was playing.
‘Look Ed, I shouldn’t have trusted him in the first place but I did and now I am just facing the consequences. There’s no use worrying over the past’ Chris said as his mind wavered around the happening events.
‘What are you gonna do about it Chris? I know you swore to avenge Grayson just like Adam wanted but I am afraid it’s not possible anymore’ Ed said in a concerned tone fearing the future outcomes.
‘I didn’t lose hope Ed and I won’t! I thought I had my revenge when I made Grayson go bankrupt but that wasn’t what Adam wanted. He wanted this and I will surely make it happen. So don’t worry about me’ Chris said convincing his worried friend.
‘You have a backup don’t you?’ Ed asked rising his brow in question.
‘There’s a reason why you are my best friend’ Chris answered laughing.
‘Anyways if Hazel asks, I came over to talk over business. Is that clear?’ Chris said in a stern voice.
‘Why didn’t you just tell her that you came here to doom my business by not letting me work?’ Ed joked looking at Chris.
‘That girl is definitely hiding something from me and I want her tell me what she’s up to so till that I am just fooling her by telling that I am busy and stuff’ Chris replied getting ready to leave.
‘Idiot..!’
‘I gotta bounce, bye’ Chris said waving goodbye to his friend.
‘Should I tell Chris or should I tell him once I solve this problem?’ Hazel asked herself tapping on the table nearby.
‘But what if I bring more trouble to Chris again? I should have told him about this Edwin plan but that idiot would’ve told me not to get involved again that’s why I didn’t tell him in the first place. Oh god, what do I do?’ she yelled losing patience.
‘Maybe I can help’ a voice said startling her off the chair.
‘Chris’
‘What’s wrong hon?’ he asked walking over to her.
‘…Nothing!’
‘What’s wrong?’ he repeated his question sitting next to her.
‘Chris, I am sorry’ she apologized after a minute of silence.
‘Why?’
‘I shouldn’t have convinced you to take in Edwin. You were right I should have listened to you’ she said as her face clouded with despair.
‘Why did you want me to take in Edwin?’ Chris asked taking her hand into his.
‘Huh?’
Chris took Hazel by surprise with his simple question. She expected him to blame her or console her that it wasn’t her fault for believing Edwin’s act but he knew she had a reason. She didn’t have to tell him, he just knew.
‘Tell me. I know it wasn’t cause of his poor acting that day’ Chris said waiting for her to explain her act.
‘Well if you didn’t believe him then why did you accept to take him in as soon as I asked you to?’ she asked wearing a guilt-ridden look on her face.
‘Cause you told me to and I know you would have had your reasons’ he answered smiling positively at her.
‘I did but it failed’ she replied leaning on him.
‘That’s fine sweetie, don’t worry! We will find a way so don’t feel guilty. It wasn’t your fault at all’ he consoled her noticing her sullen face.
‘Don’t you want to know what my plan was?’ she asked trying to figure out why he was so considerate towards her.
‘…’
‘You knew didn’t you?’ she asked in suspicion.
‘Well…you supported Edwin and I am not dumb’ he smiled looking at her puzzled face.
‘Then why the hell did you show that evidence to both of us?’ Hazel asked in a pitched voice as she grew more confused trying to understand his actions.
‘I wanted to know what you would do after I showed the evidence’ he answered looking at her.
‘I knew he would take it back to Grayson and that’s what we wanted…’ she started deciding to tell him everything.
‘We..?’
‘William helped’ she said biting back her lips waiting for him to lash out.
‘William! That’s great hon! He really helped?’ Chris asked growing delighted on hearing her response.
‘You aren’t mad?’ she asked taken aback by his reaction.
‘Why will I be? That’s genius. You got a person from Grayson’s side to help us’ he said smiling widely at her.
‘But the plan didn’t work. I thought Grayson would show the evidence to William and as per our plan William would turn it in during the case as he defended Grayson. That would’ve made Grayson feel both betrayed and embarrassed but now…’ she paused deeply regretting her plan.
‘I let you down’ she added turning away from him.
‘You could never let me down hon! Everything will be alright. I promise’ he guaranteed her slowly turning her face to look at him.
‘You promise? Oh my god! What did you do?’ she asked alarmed by his confidence.
He promised? Hazel knew that Chris only promises when he is sure that it will happen. Did he have a backup plan?
‘Do you have some other evidence?’ she asked, her eyes filled with hope.
‘No sweetie I don’t have any other evidence but I do have something against them which is enough to destroy everything they have’ he answered smiling mischievously.
‘But only if we get back that drive we’ll be able to do that, right?’ she asked trying to guess what other evidence he was talking about. There was no way out. After seeing Chris being heartbroken due to his past she wanted to help him but ended up losing the evidence forever.
‘Well…’ he paused smiling at her.
‘No way!’ she gasped happily jumping into his arms.
