- Chapter 216 I Hope You Dont Mind Sparing Yourself Some Dignity
“You told me you love meYou promised to cherish and look after me! But everything was a big fat lie!” All at the same time, anguish and sorrow overwhelmed Wang Reiji’s judgement as tears continued to flow down her miserable face.
“Was my torment not enough? Do I not deserve happiness?” Seeing Wang Reiji’s sorry state, Zhang Chenric’s heart sank as he kneeled down in front of her. However, by doing this, he only flared Wang Reiji’s anger.
“You are asking me to listen to you yet you you the person I ever loved turned his back on me in my time of utmost need! You know the truth too well! You know me too well! I am not a murderer and have never been one!” She sworn under her breath.
“That fucking day when I thought you came back for me I thought at last heaven heard my prayers. But fuck it! You set me up with the police! You handed my head to them in a silver a platter! You abandoned me and our child! Now tell me, did you still have the right to claim your daughter or even call me my love?” All the things that she had longed for to hurl at the man whom she believed betrayed her, have finally escaped her mouth. The borderlines of mixed-up unhappy shadows of the past, loss, and bitterness had blurred.
“So while I can still keep myself from pulling the trigger of this gun to kill the sought-after prosecutor Zhang, please do us a favor of stepping out of my daughter’s life completely. And do not attempt to reach out to me or my daughter ever again. Cause if you did, heaven forbid what the fuck I can do to your pathetic existence.” Wang Reiji said as she slightly choked for breath and tears hurt her eyes.
“I I am deeply sorry for what I did back then. I am sorry that I only saw things from my own perspective. I was easily swept along by my emotions and pressure from people who I thought care for my father’s well-being. I was full of anger. Anger that I thought protected me from the pain. I am sorry that I failed you. But please, do not think that you were the only one who strived during the past five years. I also struggled to be the man my conscience desired me to be. Everyday for the past five years regrets did not stop from kicking in. They always come back, haunting me all over and over again. You know what’s funny? Remorse would come to me in my most vulnerable moments. But unfortunately, no amount of guilt is going to help me turn back the time. That my only option now is to get on, make better choices. Now, here I am, trying to make amends, asking for your forgiveness. You do not have to love me back anymore. My love will be enough for you and our precious daughter.” Zhang Chenric said sounding heartbroken as it took him the last ounce of courage he had to ask for Wang Reiji’s forgiveness.
“I know you loathe me and do not wish to see me or see me around our child, but please, give me the chance to redeem myself. Please find it in your heart to consider that everything was just a misunderstanding. That we are both victims and the real culprit is still out there somewhere. Living a worry-free life, free from any accountability.” Zhang Chenric said desperately as he stared in to Wang Reiji’s puffy eyes. However, Wang Reiji seemed unimpressed and rather not convinced as she just stared at him in silence with eyes still filled with hurt and pain.
“My love-”
‘BANG!’
Zhang Chenric’s words were abruptly interrupted by the sound of the bullet that was fired from the palm gun in Wang Reiji’s hands. It did not hit him though, it was rather aimed near his face and pierced through the wall of the room they were in. He held his breath in, his face strained from the sound of the gunshot.
“Try saying something stupid again and the next bullet hits you straight in the chest. How dare you compare my suffering to yours?! And how dare you call yourself a victim?! You have no right to label yourself as a victim, Prosecutor Zhang. Did you not explicitly participate in my arrest five years ago? Also, you and your father tricked the public! Did you not hold a funeral for your father?! Earning the sympathy of every citizen of this country whileI I received everybody’s hatred!”
Wang Reiji’s words carried a lot of punch in them as they kept Zhang Chenric from moving a muscle. Though her rejection was something he expected, he was not able to prepare himself from the pain that came with it. In those five years that they were separated from each other; hatred was all that was left in the woman he failed to protect. Hatred that fueled herself to point a gun at him and end his life with its bullets. Five years were sure long. Long enough for her to become a very different person. But maybe strong hatred was good. It caused his beloved to reinvent herself and push herself to the limits.
“Leave!” Wang Reiji spoke with a coldness Zhang Chenric never heard before, “I do not care if how sorry you are and how you want to patch things up. You should have done all that back when it could have made things better, back when I was still the person who was blindly in love with you. But too bad, too much has happened. You cannot just turn back the years and just wipe out whatever went off beam in the past.” Wang Reiji said bitterly as Zhang Chenric leveled his head down, he can no longer look at her.
“We should have never me—”
“That’s not fair!” Though broken and utterly defeated by Wang Reiji’s words, Zhang Chenric snapped, lifted his head up. His heart suddenly screaming with injustice. His eyes burning with passion, it was as if fighting the arctic coldness in Wang Reiji’s gaze. He then wept. He wept as he had never wept before. He pulled his fingers through his hair as tears flooded down his cheeks.
Seeing Zhang Chenric in despair, Wang Reiji turned away, stood up, and distance herself to him.
“Please fix yourself, Prosecutor Zhang.” She said coldly, “I am going to call some of the hotel’s security personnel to drag you out my property. I hope you don’t mind sparing yourself some dignity before the eyes of my subordinates.” Wang Reiji finally said as she dashed out the room and locked the door behind her.
