Complex Romance - 18 Feelings of Guil
Just as Teresa turned her head, she saw a boy holding a cake with lighted candles approaching her while the rest of her friends were singing the Happy Birthday song. One step at a time, closer and closer to her, the boy that appeared in front of her was, John. He smiled at her with bright eyes, so bright as it could warm any girl’s heart. Teresa had complicated feeling, touched, happy, surprised, and most of it was guilty. She did not know what to do, the person in front her was her ex-boyfriend. People who did not know that it was a birthday surprise would think that it was a confession.
“Happy Birthday Teresa!” said John as he gave her the huge birthday cake. That cake was a branded name cake where you would need to order a week before buying it, and its price would be extremely expensive.
“Thank you…” she replied.
The way she replied him made the atmosphere very awkward. Those two words made John feel empty. He thought that with this he would make her happy, but what is with the awkward atmosphere? Where is the happy, smiley Teresa? This made him doubt himself, “Was this move wrong? I just wanted to make her feel special. I just was to show her that I care for her. But why is it so hard? Was I too late? Did I miss my chance?”
After cutting the cake, Teresa shared the cake with all of her friends, she even gave John a piece of cake and thanked him again as she quickly redrew and went to Jane’s side. People who did not know her thought that she was shy, but in reality she was guilty. She felt that John should not have given her this surprise and not in such a public place. She was indeed touched, but there was more guilt as she felt she did not deserve this, cause she had already made a decision to forget him and to move on. She did not want anymore complicated relationships. She only wanted to focus on her studies as she is already in her final year of high school.
“Why are you blanking out? Are you unhappy?” asked Jane.
“No, I’m very happy, it’s just I don’t think I deserve this… I feel really guilty… I don’t know how to face him?” answered Teresa.
Only to Jane could she tell her true feelings. This shows how strong their friendship is.
“I’m sorry Teresa…” said Jane.
“What do you mean?”
“I’m sorry that I did not tell you about this surprise. I knew it all along because John told me not to buy a cake for you as he is going to give you this surprise. I know that he did a lot of hurtful things to you, but after seeing him putting this much effort just to make you happy, I did not have the heart to stop him… And now I’m hurting you instead… I’m so sorry.”
Teresa was shocked, but she immediately scolded Jane,
“Don’t say sorry silly, you did nothing wrong. If I were in your shoes, I think I would also do the same thing. Thank you for telling me this. This is my problem, I will fix it somehow. Don’t worry okay.”
“Okay… But you need to tell me if you face any problems.Don’t keep everything to yourself, I will always be by your side no matter what.” Jane replied as she was relieved that her best friend was not angry about her.
