Contract Marriage: Emperor CEO’s Secretary Wife - Chapter 188
The two pets roared loudly as soon as they smelled the familiar scent of their master. Xiu Mei and Lu Chen were still a few meters away from where their house is when she heard them roar to life. She hid behind Lu Chen on reflex as her nerves jumped on high alert after hearing that scary sound.
Lu Chen introduced her to the two animals again since they’ve only met her once before and for them to get more familiar with her scent. So that if Xiu Mei goes to the garden next time, the two animals won’t blindly get suspicious of her presence.
Xiu Mei who thought that she won’t probably be walking out in the garden soon, “…”
With the addition of two animals in their family, it wasn’t only Xiu Mei who was afraid of the sudden appearance of the lion and the tigress. She was watching some drama on the television when she noticed some of the employees tremble in fear every time they hear the animals’ roar outside. She even observed that a lot of them don’t even dare to get close anywhere near the garden anymore.
Xiu Mei felt like patting their backs in comfort understanding their feelings. She really didn’t dare to go out so carelessly very soon ah…
Spending the morning lying around lazily and just watching and reading stuff, Xiu Mei easily got bored. Her childhood friend and girl friends were too busy working to reply to her messages right now.
To begin with, she wasn’t such an idle person. At the university, she spends half of her day at work, and then when she graduated, she immediately started working in the Lu Corporation. Plus she rarely used her vacation days, Xiu Mei’s body was clearly tempered for work. If she’s not working, she’ll either rest to compensate for her lack of sleep or go for a walk outside.
Though if she would compare her workaholic habits to the boss, then the President automatically wins. But Xiu Mei did notice that Lu Chen seemed to be spending a lot of his time with her instead of in front of his computer. Back in the hospital, as soon as he sees her writing something on the tablet, he’ll automatically stand up and walk over to her to read her request or anything that she wanted to say.
Xiu Mei tilted her head as she contemplated, staring upstairs. Was he being so attentive to her because she couldn’t call his name anymore if she wants to?
She remembered the gravity of her situation again despite the positive diagnosis that Doctor Lee told her. The main reason that she was stuck here at home is that she couldn’t speak ah. Every time she asked about something from her assistant, instead of calling her to report, she would now send her an email report instead.
No, it’s not just that.
Xiu Mei was trying to pass it off so passively as if it was nothing at all. But she knew that this was only the start of her nightmare.
After thinking for a moment, Xiu Mei turned off the television and stumped upstairs where Lu Chen was. Her initial plan was to talk to him about her work set up in the upcoming days.
She was just about to open the door when she heard his voice on the opposite side. It was then she finally remembered that he was in the middle of a conference call right at this moment with the board of directors.
She sighed and lowered her hand that was touching the doorknob. Forget it, she’ll just talk to him later once he’s not busy anymore. She would feel even more guilty if she disturbs him while he was in the middle of his work when she was the main reason why he was working hard like this.
Xiu Mei sulked silently, walking back into her room. She opened her laptop and started communicating with her assistant about the rat investigation she had been on previously and the other relevant work.
Xiu Mei shortly got absorbed into reading her other emails. She skimmed through the investigation report about Albert Chen and she couldn’t help but frown at the results. If others were to read it, they would have thought that the results were positive and Albert Chen should have nothing suspicious about him at all.
But because she was being incredibly suspicious about everyone for the past few months, she found an oddity in the report.
The Investigation Team did a background check on Albert Chen’s performances in the past while he was in the States. The earliest information they had on him was during his high school years wherein he became the president of the student council in his senior year. And then the rest of the data showed how he progressed smoothly throughout the years from high school to college and then in the industry.
Since he is intelligent and creative, along with his friendly personality, no one doubted his capabilities as he became one of the best among his colleagues.
She flipped back to the start again and read the reason why they didn’t have any information about Albert Chen when he was still younger, and it seems that Albert only had records from when he entered high school.
Xiu Mei considered a lot of things: maybe his name wasn’t originally Albert Chen, or he was some kind of defector or something, and many considerable factors.
Her forehead creased as she fell into contemplation. After staring at his file for a full minute, she moved on to the next file. For now, let’s put him under observation.
On Xiu Mei’s next list of agenda was checking on the project with the Zen Group that she has been working on before she was caught in an accident. With Lu Chen’s participation on the last day, it seems that everything was going well and the launch of their product will continue as scheduled in the next two months.
She was too engrossed with reading her emails that she didn’t even notice that it was already past lunchtime, nor did she hear the knocking on the door of the maids, nor the presence of her husband who was now leaning on the doorframe.
Lu Chen frowned at the sight of his wife immediately working when she just got home from the hospital yesterday. He wanted to scold her, but he stopped himself from doing so when he remembered Doctor Lee’s reminders to avoid making her feel in a bad mood.
He sighed in distress as he finally realized that influencing his subordinates with his workaholic habits now backfired on him. Especially if that subordinate is his company secretary turned wife.
If it weren’t for his butler who informed him that Xiu Mei skipped her lunch, he wouldn’t even know that she was already locking herself up inside the room to work either.
“Wife.” He called her but she didn’t even spare a gaze to him. She was too focused on the laptop in front of her as if all the other sounds and stuff around her fell deaf on her ears.
He walked over to her side with light footsteps, stopping only behind her. He lowered his head just close enough to whisper in her ears.
“Wife.” He whispered, his breath tickling her ear.
Xiu Mei’s shoulders jumped in surprise at the voice. Covering her victimized ear, her eyes trembled when she looked at Lu Chen. He only thought that she was just simply surprised when he suddenly appeared behind her but he was wrong.
The moment Xiu Mei heard his voice, the things they did last night suddenly flashed before her eyes. His deep and hoarse voice that called her ‘Wife’, ‘Baby’, ‘Darling’, and how he continued encouraging her to go faster and to try holding him tighter and this and that…
Fudge. She… was completely doomed.
Her cheeks flushed red and her heart thumped crazily against her chest as she met Lu Chen’s gaze. Blinking for a few more times, she composed herself and wiped off the memories from last night in her head.
She grabbed the tablet beside her laptop and wrote, ‘Why?’
Her thoughts still too unfocused to notice that it was already past lunch.
“The butler said you skipped lunch.” Lu Chen sternly said.
Xiu Mei blinked in confusion. What? Wasn’t it just past 11 am….
She glanced at the screen behind her and gasped in horror.
……fudge. It was already past 1 pm?! Were her eyes playing some kind of tricks on her?
Xiu Mei bit her lips and slowly turned her head to look at Lu Chen again. This time, she lowered her head like a kid that was suddenly caught skipping class.
She didn’t write anything on her tablet anymore and stood up from her seat, pulled on Lu Chen’s arms dragging her with him as they made their way to the dining area.
