Copy of Resentment - Chapter 8
Brawl by the wall
The sky was not yet dark when Bian Shengjian took a taxi all the way to the commercial street, yet the neon signs of various colors on the side of the road were already lit up. The five-color lights, which were thickly clustered together, were spectacular. It depicted the mood of a typical nightlife in a small city.
Occasionally, one or two cries could be heard from the busy street, as well as the passionate hawks of the roadside stall proprietors. These voices, which should have been so insignificant enough to be disregarded, caused Bian Shengjian to pause at a corner and listen for a few moments before slowly putting on his earbuds and walking through the crowd.
After then, all he could hear was the violent and rhythmic drum beat in his ears, which sounded to be his own heartbeat as he listened carefully. Bian Shengjian slowly walked down the roadside alone, contemplating about what to eat later while relishing on his confused emotions.
It’s not that he isn’t used to living alone, it’s simply that being alone and being lonely are not the same thing. When he was still at home, he preferred to walk down the riverfront alone after dinner, but if he called his friends, Li Fei, Tan Ming, and the others would ride their bikes quickly, come to him at a high speed, and have supper together with him.
Although Bian Shengjian sometimes thought they were obnoxious, he was a little uneasy now that things were suddenly calm and quiet, or… a little lonesome.
Lonely? Bian Shengjian felt foolish as he spoke the term twice in his mouth. He was able to get through the most painful times on his own. Yet, he still fled to a remote location and read a worn book instead. Such irony.
Third brother, third brother. If you don’t want to be lonely, who do you want to accompany you now? Li Fei? Tan Ming? Or Bian Hua?
Bian Shengjian stepped forth with two leaps and decided to proceed with the more sensible question about what to eat tonight.
“Handsome guy! Won’t you try and have a taste of barbecue tonight?” A publicity girl on the side of the road suddenly shoved a leaflet into his arms, and her face was a little red when she shouted, “The new store is open! I guarantee you will be satisfied! “
“Thanks.” Bian Shengjian was surprised by her shout that he didn’t even notice the store’s front. “Barbecue buffet! Only sixty-nine per person, including all drinks like tea…”
“I’ll go inside and eat.” Bian Shengjian raised his hand and waved it in front of her, folded the leaflet and put it in his pocket, “Don’t shout anymore.”
“Guest, please come in! The little sister smiled and exclaimed as she led him to the lobby. Bian Shengjian took two steps forward but suddenly fell back, took out half a pack of unused tissue paper from his trouser pocket and handed it to her. “You’re sweating all over your face, wipe it off. “
The little sister was stunned for a moment then quickly took the tissue, “Thank you…Thank you.”
Bian Shengjian nodded slightly, turned around, and walked in. In truth, he disliked interfering in other people’s affairs. It’s just that the streets were already scorching in early September. He was apprehensive of the little sister fainting after 10 minutes of screaming as she stood by the roadside.
It is not simple. He sighed softly.
After entering, a waiter escorted him to a vacant seat, turned on the stove and put oil paper on it before walking away. “Master, you can try our store’s fresh pig heart meat. You can pick it up at the front desk.”
“Thank you.” Bian Shengjian said.
Although the design of this shop was average, the meat quality is adequate, at least not the kind of meat alternatives that you won’t notice clearly when taken out of the freezer. Bian Shengjian rubbed some oil on the pan and poured a plate full of meat onto it. Except for his hands being a little uncomfortable from turning the meat inside and out with a tong, the sound of it sizzling in oil on the cooking platter soothed his stomach and soul.
Shengjian sprinkled some seasonings while turning the meat, and when it was roasted brown and slightly scorched, he scooped it up and crammed it into his mouth.
The feeling of eating meat with a big bite is refreshing!
As he ate it, Bian Shengjian arched his eyebrows. Even if it wasn’t an A5-level buffet, drinking and eating a mouthful of meat was already pleasant enough. He even felt that eating this meal would give him at least three days worth of peace of mind. So long as no one comes looking for him.
“Dude, are you alone?” Bian Shengjian was busy flipping the meat without raising his head, and just gave a light hum.
“That….can I sit here?”
Bian Shengjian raised his head when he heard this and saw a guy who didn’t appear to be a good person smiling at him. “Is it alright?”
Bian Shengjian frowned. His table was indeed a table for two. As it happened to be dinner time, all but his table were full. But when the man raised his head and grinned at him just now, Bian Shengjian felt uneasy for no obvious reason, as if this man had come here specifically just to find him.
“…Sit down.” Bian Shengjian lowered his head and put the almost burnt piece of meat into his bowl.
“Thank you.” The man sat down and extended his hand to him generously, “Wu Lan, care to get to know each other?”
“Bian Shengjian.” Bian Shengjian only glanced up at him before continuing to eat, but his mood gradually deteriorated.
After sitting down, this fellow named Wu Lan attempted to speak with him. His eyes seemed to always cast a covert glance his way, which made Bian Shengjian feel quite uneasy. However, he did not make a scene or be involved with this kind person in public. He simply ate the plate of meat quickly, anxious to get out of there as soon as possible.
“Are you a student of No. 4 Middle School?” Wu Lan asked with a smile.
“Yeah.” Bian Shengjian took a sip of his drink. Out of the corner of his eye, he suddenly noticed that there were three long scars on the man’s arm, extending from the back of the hand to the cuff. It looked frightening. He didn’t know whether he was scratched by a sharp weapon or scratched by a beast.
Noticing his gaze, Wu Lan put down the cup and smiled. “Scratched by a shrew.”
By a woman? Bian Shengjian frowned. According to the depth and length of the wound, it would take at least ten years of scratching to create such wounds.
Gee.
“Used to going to school?” Wu Lan shrugged and skipped the topic, moving his body to Bian Shengjian’s side, “Are you from other places? I don’t think your accent is very similar to ours.”
“It’s none of your business.” Bian Shengjian was finally fed up and grabbed his shoulder to push him back, “Don’t lean over.”
“Oh. Now the kid is angry.” Wu Lan laughed for a while, and slowly took Bian Shengjian’s hand off his shoulder.
Bian Shengjian retracted his hand, when he accidentally caught a glimpse of some scars along his neck. Those scars were entrenched in the depths of his collar, making them look like ugly black worms.
When he turned his head to look at the meat on the plate, he suddenly felt nauseated. He simply put down his chopsticks and wiped his mouth, “I’m leaving. Take your time eating.”
“I heard rumors that your school has been haunted?” Wu Lan took a piece of meat and slowly put it in his mouth, “Would you like to hear something I know?”
“I don’t want to.” Bian Shengjian said simply and neatly.
“Your No. 4 Middle School had a big murder case more than ten years ago, and everyone in a certain class died.” The moment Shenjian stood up, the man laughed a few times, “Do you want to know, how did they die? “
“…drowned?” Bian Shengjian’s footsteps paused. He turned around and glanced at him.
“Smart.” The man snapped his fingers, his tone became excited, “Then do you know how they drowned?”
Bian Shengjian’s scowl deepened. He had an intuitive hunch that there’s something strange with this man named Wu. For a moment, he seemed to notice his eyes flashed with greed as if to swallow him alive.
He didn’t bother to stay any longer. He swiftly turned around and walked out of the door of the barbecue store with his schoolbag in hand, when his arm was suddenly yanked as he passed through the entrance. “Wait!”
“Go away!” Bian Shengjian waved his hand without even thinking, thinking that it was the weird man coming after him.
“That.. it’s me.” A weak voice sounded. When Bian Shengjian turned around, he realized that it was the little sister who stood in front of the store. Her face was not anymore red at the moment, but she appeared to be a little bit scared, maybe due to his gesture just now. “This is for you.”
Bian Shengjian looked at the bottle of herbal tea drink in her hand, and didn’t speak for a while.
“You can drink this to reduce inflammation after eating the barbecue.” The girl said shyly, “Thank you for the tissue just now.”
“…It’s nothing,” Bian Sheng looked at her and sighed, “Thank you.”
It was supposed to be a good meal but was suddenly interrupted by a psychopath. Bian Shengjian walked a few steps out of the store before he realized that he was still not full.
This is so fucked up.
He could only randomly choose a sushi restaurant with a decent decoration and went in and ate a bowl of ramen. He finally felt full, however…
Bian Shengtong glanced at the time on the phone and frowned, it was already past eight o’clock.
It took him this long to just go out and have a meal. Bian Shengjian was a little depressed while sitting in the taxi on the way back. The driver turned his head and glanced at him cautiously, “Young man, I’ll only drive you up to the intersection.”
“Intersection? What intersection.” Bian Sheng looked at him and didn’t react for a while.
“It’s the intersection near your school. I can’t drive you in since it’s already night.” The driver laughed a little embarrassedly. Bian Shengjian was stunned for a few seconds and leaned back to the window. “Whatever you want.” What the hell is this?
After getting off, Shengjian originally wanted to go around to the back gate of the school so as not to give himself goosebumps. He didn’t want to face the crematorium just across the front gate at night, but he soon gave up after walking a few steps. After all, this shabby school was so big. It’s estimated that it will be dawn when he finds the back gate.
However at this point… the gate should already be locked, right?
Bian Shengjian had to retrace his steps again. As expected, the double layered anti-theft iron gate of the school was tightly shut. Even the lights in the security room were off, and only a few warm yellow street lights were still on. However, at this moment, in this lonely and strange atmosphere, Bian Shengjian got chills on his back. He was afraid he might see something hidden in the darkness.
Might as well climb over the wall. Bian Shengjian groaned.
“What school rules shouldn’t be broken? This school is not really haunted.” Bian Shengjian was looking for a wall where he could easily reach, and unknowingly went around to the side. The wall here was shorter than that near the gate. There were also no spikes on top, which could make someone feel cold just by gazing at it.
Bian Shengjian looked up and down the wall, took a few paces away, then sprang forward abruptly, pushed hard on the wall, and climbed to the top firmly.
He was used to going over the wall with Li Fei before, and now, even in a different place, he can perform this skill in a leisurely manner.
Bian Shengjian had just gotten one leg over the wall, furrowed his eyebrows, and was ready to jump down and take a daring leap when he was surprised by a pair of black eyes just below the wall. “How come you’re only back now?”
“Fuck!” Bian Shengjian screamed in fright and luckily didn’t fall off on the spot. His fingernails scraped and almost stuck into the solid wall. “Lu Shen, are you sick!”
“Did you fucking put a tracker on me?” Bian Shengjian struggled to lift his other leg up to the wall before continuing, “Whenever I return is none of your business! Go away!”
“You come down first.” Lu took a deep breath and looked at him, took a few steps forward and opened his arms, “Would you like me to…..”
Before he could finish speaking, Bian Shengjian jumped down from the wall and landed firmly in the grass two steps away from him. Although his legs were shaking a little when he landed, Bian Shengjian could not care so much about it at the moment. He squinted his eyes, rushed up and grabbed Lu Shen by the collar. He pushed him against the wall, his eyes flashing tiny sparks, “Say, how did you know I’d come back at this point?”
“I…” Lu Shen paused, “I’ve been waiting here for you.”
“Waiting for me?”
Bian Shengjian yelled in anger. “You fucking waited for me!”
“Bian Shengjian.” Lu Shen’s tone became cold. In the darkness, he grasped Bian Shengjian’s wrist that was clenching his collar. “Didn’t I tell you that you must be back before 7.”
Bian Shengjian looked at Lu Shen’s slender knuckles. He couldn’t believe how strong he was that he could easily pry his hand off. His tone became cold, “So?”
“So?” Lu Shen looked at him, seemingly trying to suppress his anger, “So, what time is it now?”
“8:35”. Bian Shengjian stared at him, suddenly opened his mouth and laughed, “Do you really think I would believe that there are ghosts in this school after listening to your ghost story? That they will come out to eat people after 7 o’clock?”
“Also,” Bian Shengjian’s smile grew colder, “let me tell you, I despise people bothering me the most in my life, so if you continue to pester me from now on, screw your entire family.”
Bian Shengjian raised his finger and poked Lu Shen’s chest after saying the last four words. His fingertip even felt the cold temperature of the black lock hanging on Lu Shen’s neck. “Do you hear me?”
Lu Shen remained silent. He only shoved him back hard and then hit him fiercely–
