Cursed Souls - Chapter 2 2 The End Of normal
“Oaki get up! You going to be late…. again!” Her father shouted.
Oaki rolled out of bed. THUD. And hit the floor.
“Oh, shoes I’m gonna be late again!” She said as she scrambled to her feet.
She looked around her bedroom for her glasses. Then reached down and pet her dog, Dao. She walked over to her dresser and threw on black skinny jeans, a grey tank top, and her favorite T-shirt. Just as she threw on her shoes and opened the front door, she how late she was really going to be.
“Shucks, it snowed!” She said disappointedly.
She ran back inside and grabbed her sweater, a winter jacket, a hat, and gloves. She ran into Kure’s room, surprised to see the light on. She opened the door to find him intensely playing video games.
“Kure I need ur help getting the snow off my car! We are going to be late!” She screamed at him.
“Oh… it snowed?” He said half ignoring her.
She walked up to his TV and pushed the power button.
“Come on, we gotta go!” Oaki said in her annoyed tone.
Kure grabbed his book bag and put on a jacket and boots. He grabbed Oaki’s stuff too and was about to bring it to the car when dad came in the room. Kure put Oaki’s things back down on the floor.
“Isn’t today the movie party for Oaki’s year?” Pa asked
“Yea…” Kure replied begrudgingly.
“Grab her a blanket from her room and bring that too.” Said dad in a domineering tone.
“Pa yanno Oaki wasn’t actually the one that got the high exam score for her year right…? She is notorious for sleeping through her English class yanno.” Kure said slightly whining.
“Yea but she did get the second highest score in her year.” He remarked sounding proud and impressed.
“Okay…okay” Kure said as he started to walk away.
Kure picked up his and Oaki’s backpack and walked into Oaki’s room. He placed both book bags in front of the doorway and walked into Oaki’s room. He looked at her bed and grabbed a blanket from her bed. Dao looked up and started barking at Kure. Dao was a small fluffy grey dog with a lot of attitudes. He pulled the blanket from under Dao. Just then Kure heard dad coming from the kitchen. He turned around to look at his father. Dao pointed up her nose and started sniffing around Oaki’s book bag then went inside and found a half eaten ham sandwich. She sniffed the bag of half eaten food. She went completely into the backpack and started eating the sandwich. Kure grabbed Oaki’s blanket and bag and went out to the car. Oaki who was frantically running around her car dusting off all of the snow and taking the ice off her windshield, ran back inside to grab her lunch. Kure loaded all their stuff into the back seat. She was about to close the door when her dad said
“Have a good day honey.”
“Thanks pa! love you bye!” She shouted from the front door.
Slam. The door closed and oaki ran out to the car. She got in the driver’s seat and started the car.
“Oaki we are never going to be there if you keep driving this slow” Kure mocked at her.
“I don’t want to go off the road!” Oaki said panicky.
She didn’t like driving in general, but she especially hated driving in winter. It reminded her of the accident and her mom. She winced a little at the memory.
“I’m sorry oaki I know..”
“Shh Kure just let me focus we will get there when we get there okay!?!” She interrupted.
The atmosphere in the car was tense for a long time. The drive out of town to school was around 35 minutes. Kure at an attempt to break the ice, but also fearing to anger Oaki quietly said…
“Oaki..”
“WHAT KURE! I’m trying to drive here!” She exclaimed.
“Sorry, it’s just… I’m hungry… I didn’t grab anything for breakfast…” he said timidly.
“Oh…” She said feeling guilty about yelling.”Where do you want to eat?” She asked sympathetically.
“Can we go to the market?” He asked still cautiously.
She slowly turned into the market. Then parked. Just as she was about to open the door, she heard rustling in the back seat. She looked back to find Dao. BARK BARK.
“Dao?” Oaki said confused. “Kure why is dao here?”
“Um… I don’t know” he said.
“What are we going to do now?”
“Let’s just get breakfast first”
Oaki grabbed down and put Dao in her jacket so she wouldn’t be cold as they walked into the market.
“I’m going to the restroom grab breakfast and meet me back here,” Oaki said.
Kure started walking away. After about 5 minutes they meet up back at their spot.
“Goodness Kure are you trying to burn a hole in my wallet!?!”
“I’m hungry… and dad never goes out and gets food anymore” he said in a ‘come on please’ kind of begging manner.
All in all, Kure had five boxes of cereal, two boxes of oatmeal, and three cans of spaghetti. They checked out.
“…Maybe no one will notice her…?” said Oaki unsure.
“Maybe.” Kure said indifferently.
They got out of the car and walked into school. They had surprisingly made it one minute before the bell. On the way to school, there were no cars outside on the road. And it was oddly quiet. Kure and oaki parted ways and went to class. Kure took the package of oatmeal he had in his pocket grabbed a cup from the cafeteria, heated water and walked late to class without a care in the world of the ‘no food in the science hall’ rule. Just then the tornado sirens started going off. Everyone in the classroom started looking at each other.
“How is there a tornado in the middle of winter?” One boy said
“What’s happening?” Lots of students stood up frantically.
Just then outside faded away into whiteness, the ground was shaking beneath them… and then everything went pitch black.
