Cynical Romantics - Chapter 11 I See The Way You Look At Her
It was a common occurrence to be awoken by visitors. Qian Meigui was a light sleeper, so voices could easily cause her to stir out of bed. Mrs. Li, the head maid then walked into the room quietly with a cup of morning tea in hand, “Good Morning Miss Song Mei.”
Qian Meigui asked Mrs. Li, “Who is here?”
Mrs. Li appread uneasy, and informed her of which guests arrived. “It’s the Chairman, and Mrs. Song, they are home. Your grandmother is also here.”
Qian Meigui gaped in surprise.
When Mr. and Mrs. Song adopted her, they re-hired all staff at home, therefore every one who is employed in the house believed her to be their real daughtera real Song.
Upon hearing the news, Qian Meigui abruptly got out of bed and changed into formal wear.
She changed into a cobalt blue jumpsuit looking professional and modest at the same time, and began to walk to the main room.
Qian Meigui heard Song Ren speaking in a self-justified tone, and everything else was silent.
She hesitated to walk in, but she knew she had to greet her family out of respect.
Entering the room, she could see Chairman Song sitting next to Mrs. Song on a custom-made couch imported from France. Grandmother Song was sitting on a long chair holding a cane. Song Sheng wore a casual black long sleeved-shirt with black pants, and sat parallel of Mrs. And Mrs. Song, looking expressionless. Song Ren stood in the middle of the circle.
Song Ren stopped speaking when Qian Meigui walked in.
Qian Mei bowed her head lightly and greeted her parent’s and grandmother.
Chairman Song’s knitted brows softened as Qian Mei walked in. He acknowledged her but did not say anything.
It was Grandmother Song who spoke. “Mei, What do you think of Sheng leaving the company?” She asked.
Stunned, Qian Mei did not know how to respond.
“Mother, Mei has nothing to do with this. Do not scare the girl,” said Chairman Song with a deep tone.
Grandmother Song smiled. “I want to know what she thinks,” she said to her son. The chairman quieted and she returned to Qian Mei, “What do you think? Be honest girl.”
Qian Mei looked nervous as she tried to compose herself. If she were Song Ren, she would have to be smart about her response.
“I believe that forcing someone who expressed disinterest to inherit a multi-million dollar company or billions in yuan, would neither be wise or strategic. His lack of motivation would make him a terrible CEO.”
Initially, Grandmother Song looked sternly cold at her, but then she smiled with a hint of amusement.
“Indeed,” Grandmother Song said.
Song Ren who was standing continued,
“Song Mei is right. Furthermore, I believe I am capable of being president. I know that you all spent years investing in Sheng, but I can prove that I will be a great leader. I am also engaged to Su Feng.”
The Song’s all had raised their brows. Even Qian Mei did not seem to notice the ring on Song Ren’s left hand. Inwardly, Qian Mei was happy. She had seen the way Su Feng looks at her.
“You’re engaged? You’re far too young.” Father Song asked disapprovingly.
“Does it matter?” Song Ren argued. “I don’t love him, this is merely business. For the sake of the company”
Father Song tried to conceal a smirk from his face. Indeed, Song Ren was his daughter. He inwardly felt proud. Though he did not say anything.
To Qian Mei, his face was cold and domineering. And Song Ren met him with an equal expression.
She continued, “Su Feng will only marry me if I inherit the company. He is already the heir of his own company. Together we would be invulnerable. Even you yourself could not find Sheng a suitable match, as no woman can compare to your own daughters.”
Qian Mei had a feeling she was lying. Su Feng would marry Song Ren even if she were a commoner. Though Chairman Song would not know about that.
Chairman Song appeared amused. He then said,
“I have discussed the matters with your grandfather, and we decided that as long as you complete your studies in biomedical science and business, and Marry Su Feng, the company will be yours. In the meantime it will be Sheng that has his name in my will.”
Ren bowed her head, and said formally, “Thank you for your time Chairman.”
Out of all his children, Chairman Song knew that Song Ren was his golden child. Though he did not like to compare his children since he loved each of them, including Song Mei.
Song Ren had exceptional grades and excelled in nearly everything. Song Sheng was the same, but he was more passionate in the Arts.
He waited for the moment his daughter would challenge him and fight for something she believed in. He knew she would make the right choice.
Chairman Song then said, “Ren take Mei with you.” Qian Meigui left with her sister.
–
Song Ren left with Qian Meigui and left Song Sheng with the wolves.
“Sheng, it’s a shame that you disinherit yourself. What are you to do now?” Chairman Song asked his son in a cold submissive tone.
Song Sheng then said, “I want to pursue teaching.”
Chairman Song scoffed a laugh, “You’re a disappointment. But since you are my eldest Son, I will help you.”
He then dismissed his own mother and wife. And the two of them were left alone. He also requested the butler to close the large double doors of the main room. It had not been closed in years.
Song Sheng wondered what his father wanted to speak to him about. “I will allow you to leave the company and become a teacher. Not because that was your choice, but because I do believe Ren would be what’s best.”
“You can do whatever you like, as long as you keep distance between you and Xiao Mei.”
Song Sheng’s eye’s widened. He looked agitated, “Father what do you mean?”
“I see the way you looked at her. Do not tell me you disappeared all this time just to make a choice of inheritance. The servant’s have also reported suspicion that you two are particularly close. You realize in the family registry she is my daughter, even if we aren’t bound by blood.”
Song Sheng looked down. He could not meet his father’s eye. “As long as you act like a brother to Song Mei, you will be allowed to pursue whatever career you want. Understood?” He said.
Song Sheng nodded in agreement. He did not deny his feelings. He couldn’t. But his father may separate her from him, if he did not straighten up. He must be her brother.
