Cynical Romantics - Chapter 21 Affectionately Close With His Sister
After completing her studies, Su Feng took Song Ren home and went inside the house to greet her family.
Immediately, they heard Song Jinyi arguing with someone from the main door.
Song Ren glanced at Su Feng, and began rubbing her temples. She then walked into the kitchen with Su Feng behind him, and they noticed that Song Jinyi was yelling at Song Sheng. She seemed to be angry as she waved her arms around and spoke in self-justified tone.
Song Sheng did not say much; he only shook his head.
Song Ren took her coat off, and Su Feng grabbed it from her and placed it on a coat hanger. “What is going on?” Song Ren asked dismissively.
“Ren!” Song Jinyi exclaimed. Jinyi ran up to Song Ren and then greeted Su Feng as he hung up Ren’s coat, “Hello brother Feng, it is nice seeing you,” she said.
Su Feng greeted her back, “Jinyi, you are as spirited as always.” Song Jinyi smiled.
“Ren! Brother is being unfair. Jun and I want to go on a trip, and he won’t let us!” she said as she glared at Song Sheng.
Song Sheng grabbed an apple and began slicing them, appearing indifferent.
“You want to come too, right Mei Mei?” Jinyi asked Mei.
Qian Meigui gaped, as she thought she had nothing to do with this.
“Jinyi, stop. Don’t bring people into your schemes. Mother and father put me in charge of you, and you must listen,” Song Sheng said threateningly.
“Your not the boss of me, you disappeared and while you were gone it was Ren that took care of us,” she said with a wary voice.
Song Sheng appeared to be shocked that Jinyi stood up to him, but his expression quickly died. It left only cold reservation.
Qian Meigui glanced at Song Sheng sympathetically as she understood that he was trying to patch things up with his family recently, and it was difficult.
Song Ren sighed. “Jinyi, where do you want to go anyways? We just started the term,” she said.
“Which makes it the perfect time to go, as we will be stuck with exams and responsibilities later in the term,” began Song Jinyi.
“Also we could go anywhere like Jiuzhaigou, we went there last summer anyways,” said Jinyi.
Song Ren crossed her arms, “Jiuzhaigou is more than 20 hours away,” she said.
Song Jinyi thought for a moment, until Su Feng interrupted. “What about Nanbei Lake? I have a holiday home near there. It’s an hour away and I can drive you guys there.”
Song Jinyi smiled brightly at Su Feng and ran to embrace him, “Thank you brother Feng.”
Su Feng smiled, and looked at Song Ren who looked a bit displeased. He proposed the idea because he knew that if he came, he would have the chance to spend more time with Ren. In the meantime, he will find evidence to prove himself.
Song Ren exhaled and said, “Fine it’s settled. We can take a weekend trip, and then there shall be no more unexpected trips for the rest of the term, got it?”
Song Jinyi smiled and said, “Yes, I promise sister.” She lied.
Song Jinyi then turned around and ran to Qian Meigui. “Mei, we get to go,” she said as she turned to face Song Sheng and stuck her tongue out at him.
Qian Meigui felt uneasy, before Song Sheng said, “I’m far too busy, I can’t go.”
Qian Mei felt hurt. In some ways, she wanted him to go.
Song Ren furrowed her brows at her brother, “Don’t you dare. I have a lot of studying to do, and you can’t leave me alone with them,” she said in a vexing tone.
Song Jinyi then argued, “It’s not like we are children.”
Song Ren turned to give her sister a cold gaze. Song Jinyi shivered, no one is as scary as Song Ren! Not even their father.
Song Sheng looked at Song Ren, who gave an equal glance of a cold stare-down.
It was Song Sheng who lost. “Fine,” he said.
Song Ren smiled and turned to Su Feng, “Dear, can you make the arrangements? If we are going on trip during the school term, then I want to have a good time.”
Su Feng froze at the word ‘Dear.’ Song Jinyi began to giggle, and Su Feng flushed in embarrassment. Song Ren smirked in amusement.
Su Feng nodded, “Yes, I will plan everything,” he said before giving Ren a kiss on her fingers and waving good-bye to the rest of the family.
When Su Feng left, Song Jinyi smiled, “You so have that boy wrapped around your finger.”
Song Ren raised a brow, “Why do you think I am engaged to him?” she said as she raised her hand with her glimmering teardrop ring. They both chuckled.
—
Five days passed by.
Song Ren stayed up extra hours throughout the week to complete her weekly studies, Song Sheng packed his work with him. Qian Meigui and the twins left their homework to do at the last day, when they return from the trip, at the last minute.
In the early sunrise, Su Feng came to pick up the Song family at 7 A.M. who dressed comfortably and felt groggy by the lack of sleep they got.
When they got in the car, Song Ren sat next to Su Feng in the passenger seat while the twins sat in the far back, and Qian Mei sat next to Song Sheng in the middle of the van.
Qian Meigui played classical music from her phone and earpods, while Song Sheng reviewed some documents on his tablet. The twins in the back were tangled and sleeping. While Song Ren was sleeping in the front seat, wearing Su Feng’s coat as a blanket.
Qian Mei looked out the window to look at the countryside view. When they passed something dark like pine trees, she could see Song Sheng’s faint reflection from the window. He took his work seriously, and she admired that sight of him. It was entrancing.
She then felt a wave of tiredness when she yawned. Song Sheng without looking up at her said, “If you are tired, you can rest your head on my shoulder.”
Qian Meigui stilled. She then tried to reason with the voices in her head. In the end, she took his offer and rested her head on his shoulder. She then fell asleep.
In the rearview mirror, Su Feng glanced at the family. Everyone was asleep. Surprisingly, Song Sheng looked affectionately close with his sister, as he rested his head on hers, and fell asleep with her.
