Cynical Romantics - Chapter 26 Lets Embrace The Point Of No Return
Song Sheng remembered nights when he would study for his University final exams.
It was 2 A.M, one night when Qian Meigui came into his study with a tray of snacks and coffee. She then picked up a book to read and sat quietly next to him. She would insist on staying up with him, and he knew it was due to the nightmares she was experiencing. So he never rejected her.
Qian Mei would fall asleep on her chair, and by 4 A.M, Song Sheng would place her in bed. He would always watch her sleeping face gently, and initially he thought it was due to the fact that he was acting brotherly towards her. But since he already had two sisters that share his blood, he quickly learned the distinction between brotherly love and romantic love.
One night, Song Sheng locked the study room to prevent being disturbed. When he finished his studies he found Qian Mei sleeping against the wall outside the room with her arms relaxed, and a book lay over her legs. He felt helpless, and invited her to his study every night. Eventually, Qian Meigui learned to sleep without having nightmares.
Nonetheless, she was his supporter.
Initially, he vowed to treat her as family to make her a part of the family. As the eldest of four, he felt that he knew the act of an older brother well and felt like he would not treat Qian Mei any differently from the others. However, she always found a way to surprise him.
When they met, she was cold, distant, and worlds away. Slowly, she became more spirited and alive, and would put in the effort to be apart of the family.
Song Sheng began to grow more conscious of her because she believed in him. When she found him drawing, she encouraged him to draw more. He informed her that drawing was a hobby, and he was invested in business management. She then looked perplexed and told him that drawing was not a hobby to others. Since then, he realized his passion was more with the Arts. He was only a now teacher because it paid more.
Slowly, Qian Meigui grew and became more beautiful. She already acted like an adult since they met, and when he saw her as a woman, he became more distant.
He always enjoyed ruffling her hair, as he got to touch her beautiful locks and witness her bashful face. He always wanted to embrace her, and not in a way of sibling love, but of affection and desire.
The more he thought this way, the more desperate he grew to be apart from her. But he couldn’t. He was hurting her more than doing any good, by being distant.
“I like you,” she said in a soft whisper.
He looked at her incredulously before he said firmly, “You don’t like me. You like the idea of me because I am kind to you.”
Qian Meigui thought for a moment, gathering her thoughts before she shook her head vigorously. “No, there’s Zheng Min, and even with him I would still choose you.”
Song Sheng gritted his teeth. He didn’t want to hear those words. But yet when she said it, the wall he built to protect instantly melted. He shouldn’t feel this way. He couldn’t.
But the girl in front of him, was the person he also dreamed of. He realized his feelings shortly after she turned seventeen. Whenever she was around, he would suddenly feel hot and feel the urge to reach out to her.
Out of impulse, he then embraced her. He placed his hand on her head gently and pushed her forward to him. She lay on top of him and they quietly hugged on the ground.
They only heard the exchange of their ragged breathing. And he lay with his eyes closed. He reached out to caress her arms, but he pulled his arms back.
He did not want to cross the line, it would be the point of no return.
Without speaking, Song Sheng slowly pushed Qian Meigui away and they both rose from the ground. They walked back through the shallow end of the river and went to the other side to collect their shoes.
It was late afternoon when they met up with the others.
Qian Meigui round an opportunity to speak with Song Ren.
To keep her mind occupied, she glanced at Su Feng and raised a brow.
Song Ren rolled her eyes and said flatly, “we’re not together in the way you think. We’re only just doing it.”
Qian Mei glanced at her coldly, “I am not against friends with benefits, but I hope you don’t hurt his feelings. Su Feng seems to care about you deeply.” She said.
Song Ren exhaled deeply, as she knew what she was doing but she couldn’t help but be like this. She would rather they be lovers than boyfriend and girlfriend, fearing she would get hurt again.
Song Ren and Qian Mei went back into the house and played games.
The night soon fell, and stars rained over the sky.
Qian Mei glanced at them through a window of a dark room, and the moon lightly illuminated her face. She thought about twins who were probably up to no good, whereas Song Ren disappeared with Su Feng again.
It was only her and Song Sheng that were alone in the drawing room. He was sketching something intensely, as he appeared to be concentrated.
Knowing he was distracted, Qian Mei snuck up to him silently when he wasn’t looking by crawling on the ground before popping upstartling him.
He looked so startled, that he closed his book quickly and threw it next to himself on the couch.
Qian Mei chuckled, and sat next to him.
“Lighten up,” She said carelessly.
He shot her a cold glance before he leaned over and tickled her.
Qian Mei laughed uncontrollably at the sudden attack. She told him to stop before he slowed down.
She was breathing heavily from laughing, and he still held on to her waist. They locked eyes for a moment, so intensely that they saw each other through their piercing gazes.
Qian Mei couldn’t help it. Since she spoke to Song Jinyi and Song Ren about love, she felt motivated to take initiative.
She reached upward, where her breath glided over his mouth, they were close and yet apart.
She then whispered near his lips, “Let’s embrace the point of no return.”
