Cynical Romantics - Chapter 8 Come Back To Us
Qian Meigui woke up to the sound of visitors. She then changed into something simple from her nightwear and headed down the stairs. The housekeepers greeted her before entering the main room. The main room was grand with a high ceiling and chandelier hanging, and articulate furniture. The room was staged, so those who reside in the house do not use it unless visitors come over. She peaked into the room and found Song Ren speaking to Chairman Song’s secretary from the company.
The conversation between the secretary and Song Ren seemed serious, so Qian Meigui decided to walk toward the kitchen before someone barged into their home. Su Feng entered through the front door, looking serious and worried and hurried. He walked passed Qian Meigui without seeming to notice her and walked into the main room. Qian Meigui felt compelled to follow him. She stood in the hall in front of the main room when she heard Song Ren say, “You again?”
Su Feng then said, “I am sorry for coming in unannounced, but there is something you need to know.” Qian Mei noticed as Song Ren sat down on a long chair, crossing her legs and arms, waiting for him to speak. She was starting to look more like an executive. “I’m listening,” she said with a fake smile. Su Feng appeared to be uneasy as he said, “It’s about your brotherwhen I heard he disappeared months ago, I tried every way I could to find him, and I could not. I know how much he means to you. One of my men informed me he purchased a one-way ticket to England, and he plans to depart at noon.”
Song Ren stood up with a look of surprised. “That idiot,” she said. Even Qian Meigui felt uneasy. Does he really plan to leave again? Song Ren then began walking over when she noticed Qian Meigui in the hall. “Mei Mei, good, you’re awake. Come with me, as we must get our idiot brother.” Qian Meigui looked at her puzzled, “Why me?” she asked. Song Ren smiled, “Well aren’t you two close?” she asked.
Qian Meigui thought to herself for a moment. Were they really? She felt like they weren’t at all. He did not even tell her he was leaving.
Song Ren then grabbed Qian Meigui by the hand to lead her out, and stopped suddenly. She turned to Su Feng and said, “Aren’t you coming too?” Su Feng looked surprised and replied, “You want me to come with you?”
“Well, I don’t know how to drive and your sports car seems fast, so let’s go.” Su Feng then nodded enthusiastically.
Song Ren moved forward, but Qian Meigui’s eyes were locked on Su Feng as she walked closely behind her sister. He seemed happy and Qian Meigui looked back to see Song Ren who looked indifferent. Qian Meigui sighed.
They reached the airport, and checked for the flight gate from Shanghai to London. Su Feng had called a friend from the airport to let them into the gate, as they did not have tickets. It was hours before his flight, but she knew he would be there waiting.
They looked around the waiting room where it was flooded with people. Qian Meigui then noticed a familiar figure with his leg crossed over the other, his chin resting on his thumb and index finger, engrossed in a book written in a different language. Qian Meigui recognized it was English. She remembered that Song Sheng’s favourite subject in University was English.
Song Ren was the one who approached him first. He looked up startled. “Why are you three here?” he asked. Qian Meigui noticed that Ren clenched her teeth and fists. She then said, “I am trying really hard not to hit you again.” Song Sheng looked at her with coldness. His eyes seemed to challenge her. She responded with an icy-cold gaze, but Song Sheng began to chuckle and Song’s Ren’s eyes softened. She bit her lip to stop from laughing, it seemed that they were back to themselves again. Qian Meigui was glad.
Song Ren then stopped smiling and said, “Brother what ever you are thinking of doing. Don’t. Come back to us.” Song Sheng looked at her in seriousness. “Father will kill me and I’ve disappointed everyone, especially you.” Song Ren rolled her eyes and said, “I can handle it. You underestimate me big brother.” Song Sheng glanced at Su Feng, and Song Ren noticed.
“Don’t worry about him, I will marry Su Feng, but not because our family requires it. I will marry him out of my own free will,” said Song Ren. Su Feng then blurted out, “You will? You will marry me?” Song Ren turned to him and shrugged her shoulders, “I guess.” Su Feng tried to conceal his excitement, but failed as he was grinning widely. Song Sheng did not seem convince to go back with them. Song Ren then said, “Please, I will stand up to father. The twins also misses you and Mei Mei wishes you were home.”
Qian Meigui’s face flushed, as she tried to not feel nervous. Song Sheng glanced at her and Qian Meigui felt captured. This manHis eyes kept locked on her, as to wait for an answer. Qian Meigui delved the courage to say, “It’s true. Come home with us. Otherwise who would help me in my English studies? Who would tease me endlessly? And who would help me with Mission Rose?”
Mission Rose was a plan to find out who killed her parents. Only Song Sheng knew about it, but it had been a year since they found any clues related to the case. Song Sheng seemed to have considered what she was saying. He was expressionless and Qian Meigui did not know whether they convinced him or not. A rose was found in her mother’s hand, though it was part of the flowers Qian Meigui had gotten them before they departed. So they called it Mission Rose.
Song Sheng sighed and began to put his book away in his carry-on. He glanced at all three and said, “I guess I will stay.” Song Ren smiled.
