Dark Wind Icy Snow Ryutar Yinyuan - Volume 1 Chapter 331
Covering his mouth and nose with one arm, trying his best to push down his disgust, Snow approached the small stream. He could still see how wide it had been, its banks now a black muddy extension of dead land that would eventually dry completely. It smelled really bad. And either he was getting more sensitive to that smell or it was getting worse day by day.
Looking back, Snow signaled the little girl to come closer. And the minute she finally reached him he raised a round wall of ice around them, including a section of the small stream inside it, effectively stopping the flow of water into that small space.
Next, he carefully activated his purifying daitai, focusing on controlling it, limiting its action to that small space. He didn’t want to spend more energy than needed. Besides, no matter how much it pained him, he knew that, unlike what he had done at Nox, there was no use trying to heal the land. The corruption had ingrained itself too deeply, so much so that he would never be able to cleanse that entire forest in one go. As such, even though he might be able to purify a small area, the minute he left that place the corruption would immediately take over it again.
No. No matter how hard it was to be faced with the tragic state of that land and still not do everything in his power to help it, Snow had to focus on what was really important. Like making sure they had clean water to drink, he decided, steeling his heart as he watched the water now locked between his ice walls turn clear again. Just to make sure, he added a bit of healing, and the muddy banks of the small stream inside his icy circle immediately recovered their original aspect, the land looking healthy and fertile. He knew that if he activated his daitai of renovation next small green sprouts would then cover the ground around their feet, but he would never be that cruel to those small plants. This was a mere illusion, one that would fade away the moment he turned his back on it.
As always, the little girl beside him just stood there, watching in silence. She’d been a bit startled, the first time Snow had done such a thing, but her surprise hadn’t lasted for long. Now she just watched impassively, silently waiting until he told her that it was safe to go and fill their waterskins.
At first Snow had tried to heal her as well. Especially those dark vein-like paths that covered her entire small body.
As to be expected from a noble-born, the little one had been blessed with daitai as well. But her markings, that Snow supposed had once been bright green, besides having been completely disfigured by all those whipping scars, were now faded and barely visible, the dark veins crossing them forming a net that spread all over her back.
It was a very sad, and at the same time terrible thing to see. Even more so because, unlike with everyone else he had come across with, Snow hadn’t been able to feel anything wrong with her, not until he had taken off her tattered tunic. And so yes, he had tried to heal her. Tried to make those dark veins disappear. But nothing had happened. Sure, some of the bruises that had marred her arms from being held with too much strength, and her scrapped knees from when she’d stumbled and fell, those had all been successfully healed. But the abnormal dark veins hadn’t shown any sign of fading away, much less disappear. Probably because Snow himself couldn’t understand what had caused them, he had eventually concluded in defeat.
And then there was that horrible collar, completely glued to her neck, almost as if it had been melted into her skin, with that foreboding orifice on the back. It tore his heart, just wondering about what it could be used for. And he suspected that the dark veins that spread across her pale skin had all originated from that spot on her back. He really wanted to find a way to release her from that collar. Even though there was no way he could be certain about it, somehow he was under the impression that, as long as the children wore them, there was no way they could ever be free, or that ZaiWin could take them away when they escaped. Which meant that they couldn’t even start planning their escape.
Taking a deep breath, Snow smiled. He always missed the smell of fresh, clean air, and how good it felt when it filled his chest.
“It’s safe now,” he told the little girl, and she quickly made her way to the now lake-like stream, filling the waterskin he had handed her to carry.
Snow followed her, also filling his two waterskins, and then took off his tunic, filling handfuls of water, washing himself as best as he could. Seeing this, the little girl quickly took off her dirty tunic as well, and happily laid down on the shallow water, spraying her arms and legs.
Snow smiled, seeing her pleased expression, her blond hair floating freely around her head. She really loved water, he thought, since she never lost an opportunity to bathe the moment he so much as hinted that she was allowed to do so.
Snow wished he could wash their clothes as well, but none of them had any spare clothes to wear, and having to spend the rest of the day wearing wet clothes was out of the question. Even though now was as hot as one would expect from any hot summer day, that didn’t mean that in just a few minutes the weather wouldn’t suddenly change. And so he didn’t want to risk being dressed in wet clothes if the temperature were to suddenly drop. Not that he feared getting sick or anything like that. That he could remember, he had never gotten sick from being exposed to extremely cold weather. But the same could not be said about the little girl, or about ZaiWin who would undoubtedly get wet as well, if he were to return to his side in that state. So they just washed their bodies as best as they could, and then resigned themselves to putting back their dirty clothes.
Still, it was better than nothing, Snow sighed, thinking about ZaiWin, and about how he would have liked to take him there as well. Which was obviously out of the question. There was no way they would ever allow them to go anywhere together. That was the unspoken rule of their present situation, Snow knew.
From what Snow had observed so far, MaoHan was somehow able to control ZaiWin’s inner-energy, which forced ZaiWin to obey his every command. As such, every time Snow left camp ZaiWin stayed behind, as insurance that he would behave and obediently return. And then there were the children, to make sure Snow didn’t simply freeze them all where they stood.
Snow sighed.
If it were just ZaiWin and him he would have found a way to escape a long time ago. But the children According to MaoHan, if he left them behind the distance between them would kill them. If he tried to take them with him, MaoHan would kill them with one thought. Even if he managed to kill MaoHan, the moment MaoHan died the children would die as well. Snow gritted his teeth. What was he supposed to do with that? Risk those children’s lives and simply run away? He didn’t understand how the children could be linked to him in such a way that just putting some miles between them would make their hearts stop. It could all be a lie, he knew. But it could also be true. Looking back, at the way ZaiWin had silently commanded him to stand down, he knew that he too, wasn’t sure about anything. He wished he could talk to him and discuss what he had found out about the children’s collars and those strange, dark lines.
