- Chapter 324: SS1 01: Breaking and Entering (Except with Keys)
Kiri and Blueberry slept on the penthouse couch. Her white fur and his black one created an image similar to the Yin and Yang symbol. Their food bowls had been licked clean. Their water was almost out. Fluffy white clouds rolled by outside the window where a light rain of snow fell down from the heavens.
Keys jingled from the other side of the front door.
“Kiri?” Eve said, shrugging off her coat and hanging it on the coat rack. She tucked her bob cut hair behind her ear before walking further into the room. “Kiri? Blueberry?”
At the sound of her name, Kiri pulled her head up. “Meow?”
Her purple eyes scanned the living room and failed to spot Eve. She leaped off the couch, hitting Blueberry in the face. The latter feline hissed under his breath. Then, he softened when he noticed it was Kiri at fault. Sitting up on the backrest, he shook his head and glanced in the direction of the front door.
His blue eyes watched indifferently as the missus of the household reached the living room.
“Hey, Kiri,” Eve cooed. She lifted up the albino cat and cradled it like a baby. Kiri purred under and nestled her head under Eve’s shoulder. “Is Ambee home yet? Not yet? Are you hungry?”
An irritated “Meow” came from the couch.
Eve looked up and waved at Blueberry. “Two wet cat food coming right up.”
Checking the time, Eve prepared enough food for the cats before Ambryan would feed them. She rubbed her hands together and at her cashmere sweater. It probably wasn’t the best time for a haircut but she had been itching to do it. Her natural hair had grown long enough.
She knelt down and gave both cats one last pet. “I’ll be taking the guestroom now. Don’t tell Ambee I was here, okay? Let’s surprise him tomorrow instead.”
Her phone vibrated in her pocket.
.
“Yan: Where are you right now?“
.
Eve nearly jumped on the spot. She whirled around, checking for cameras. No one should know she was in the city. She hadn’t told anyone about her visit besides Cale and Avery—as well as the cats now that they saw her. Her leg took a step back. Her other leg did the same. The hairs on her arm had risen up in caution.
Goosebumps shivered down her spine.
Then, she bolted for the guest room that Ambryan never looked at.
.
“Lin: Nice and cozy in your house in France. You?“
“Yan: My house?“
“Lin: Our house. So, where are you and why were you dodging my question?“
“Yan: I wasn’t dodging your question.“
“Lin: See? You just did it again. Are you working late again, Mr. Hathaway?“
.
Eve snuggled under the blanket after a quick bath and change of clothes. She had stored clothes in the penthouse due to Avery’s insistence. If the madam had her way, Eve would have clothes in every residence Ambryan owned plus the Hathaway Manor. She was family, Avery said. His house was her house, the madam continued.
Thus, even the house Eve hadn’t seen yet had a closet full of clothes.
.
“Yan: Only for a little while. They want to try filming tomorrow in the office and I have to be present. There is this new director that Venus Investments wants to try out. A fresh mind in the industry they like to call him. I have a bad feeling about it.“
.
Eve’s heart sank. She had come to stay over the weekend but it seemed it wouldn’t be anything like she planned. Her thumbs typed a response slowly.
.
“Lin: Work truly never stops for you, huh? Will Hannah also be there?“
“Yan: Yes, she will be assisting me. If I agree for them to film in the office, I also want her to be there to supervise every weekend. The crew may be working for us but I will not take chances.“
“Lin: Oh, yes. Please hide your inappropriate magazines.“
“Yan: Ms. Hart… since when had I kept inappropriate magazines in my office?“
“Lin: So you are saying there are some not in your office?“
“Yan: …“
.
Covering her mouth, Eve muffled her laugh. Ambryan could be walking down the hallway from all she knew. She rolled onto her back and peeked at the door. She had turned off the lights outside after her bath. The gap under the door remained dark, hinting that Ambryan hadn’t come home yet.
A yawn flowed out of her lips.
.
“Lin: Don’t stay up too late, Mr. CEO. I’m going to sleep. Good night. Mwah!“
“Yan: Good night, Mrs. Hathaway.“
“Lin: We’re not married yet.“
“Yan: If I say it enough, it would erase any second thoughts you might be having.“
“Lin: I’m not having second thoughts!“
“Yan: Then, it shouldn’t be a problem calling you that.“
“Lin: …“
.
Eve shook her head at the dark ceiling. Disapproval projected out of her brown eyes—but the blossoming grin on her face begged to differ. A deep sigh exhaled out of her nose. Oh, how deep she fell for this man.
He better be surprised to see her tomorrow.
.
“Lin: Why am I marrying you again?“
“Yan: Because you love me.“
“Lin: Says who?“
“Yan: You did.“
“Lin: Well, aren’t you a lucky bastard.“
“Yan: Now that you found a way to insult me without it sounding offensive, you can now go to sleep. Good night, Eve. I’ll call you in the morning.“
“Lin: You know me so well. Okay, we can get married. No need to be pushy. Good night, Ambee. Don’t just call! Send a selfie too!“
.
Ambryan stepped out of the elevator in Eros Headquarters. The cold air of the parking lot crawled up under his sleeves. A deep scowl scrunched over his eyebrows. He had heard of selfies before. He and Eve had taken several photos as well—but none from his own initiative.
What sort of selfie did she want? She could have been more specific.
“Late work today, boss?” An old gruff voice asked him.
Looking up, Ambryan spotted the security guard on duty. He stopped in his tracks and raised his eyebrows in question. “Darryl. Isn’t your shift over?”
The old man merely shrugged and wrote something on his notebook. “I had to do something earlier so I switched places with Darren. The quiet is nice sometimes. I also get to play any music I want.”
Ambryan opened his mouth, trying to recall his memories from earlier the day. What had he been doing that he failed to see his security guard was different? “I’m sorry I didn’t notice.”
“It’s alright. I know what it feels like to be young in love. Although, we didn’t have cell phones back in the day. I imagine if we did, I would be as engrossed as you are whenever the missus sends me something.”
At that, Ambryan chose not to answer. The probability that it had been about Eve was high. He didn’t need actual statistics to know it too. Since she had gone back to France, he spent every possible free time talking to her on the phone.
The wedding couldn’t come any sooner.
“Have a safe trip home, boss.” Darryl smiled. He wouldn’t say it out loud but he and his wife ate up any news about Ambryan and Evangeline. His wife had never been more eager to hear stories about the young CEO. It always shocked her to hear how different Ambryan had become.
He couldn’t wait to tell her about the movie.
“Take care of yourself, Darryl.”
Ambryan reached his penthouse in record time. He hung his jacket on the coat rack. A bundle of white fur snuggled up the side of his leg. He lifted Kiri up at arm’s length away from his face. He heard cats couldn’t really smile but they had the muscles to mimic the expression on their lips.
Kiri wore that on her face right about now.
“Meow,” she greeted him, licking her lips. “Meow, meow~”
“Well, you seem energetic. Had a good time while I was gone?” Ambryan chuckled. He looked down and found Blueberry. Unlike Kiri, he stayed still while sitting on the floor. “What about you? Anything to report?”
“Meow.”
“I see. The two of you must be hungry. Let’s get you some food.”
Blueberry followed right behind while Ambryan carried Kiri to the kitchen. He opened the cupboard where their food was stored and noticed something peculiar. His hand paused in mid-air as he counted the cans of wet food.
Then, his attention shifted towards the bowls.
A tiny thin piece of wet cat food had been left in one of them. From looking at it, Ambryan figured it hadn’t been long since the cats ate. He specifically remembered that he only gave them enough for the morning and the afternoon.
Why would there be fresh food on their bowls then?
“Had mom or Wen stopped by to feed you both?” Ambryan wondered out loud. He scratched Kiri’s head while looking at Blueberry. It was the only explanation he could think of. “You two are very loved cats, aren’t you?”
“Meow, meow,” Kiri answered him. Ambryan glanced down at her and moved his fingers from the top of her head to under her chin. She closed her eyes, purring from satisfaction. Ambryan was still her favorite even with new companions around.
Meanwhile, Blueberry had his head turned towards the guest room. His tail swept across the floor once. Twice. Three times. Then, he looked at Ambryan. If the tomcat could frown, he would right about now.
Not from his girlfriend accepting affection from another male but from this hooman failing to realize they had a guest over. Why was he so calm? There could have been an intruder!
“I should get to bed,” Ambryan declared. He put Kiri back on the floor and patted Blueberry’s head on the way. “Try not to wake me up for anything that isn’t necessary. Good night”
Kiri appeared beside Blueberry, acting as calm as Ambryan. The latter glared at Ambryans’s retreating back. Wasn’t this hooman supposed to be smart?
Then, why did he act stoopid?
