“Why is the location of your phone in Maize City?”
The world fell silent. There was no TV background noise, no drops of water leaking from a faucet nor a singing cricket outside. Eve jerked her head up and made eye contact with Ambryan. Her husband stared back, mimicking her wide look.
“Eve?” Avery spoke again. “Eve! I asked you a question.”
“Mother.” Ambryan flickered his gaze towards the smartphone.
“Yan? What are you doing in Maize City? Shouldn’t you be in Rome?”
Gulping, Eve waited for Ambryan to say something. Her mind had gone as blank as the day she had a speech contest back in college. She blabbered her heart out until one of the judges gave the cue that her time was up. Anything she could have said better rushed to her head after it was over.
If only she had them during the actual contest.
Why were the best responses always after when she needed them?
“AMBRYAN HATHAWAY, ANSWER ME!” Avery yelled when the line became silent once again. Jackson looked up from his book. He lied on the bed with his back on the headboard. The passage had captured his entire attention that he hadn’t noticed his wife was on the phone until now.
He sent a silent prayer for Ambryan and Eve.
Ambryan opened his mouth. Then, he closed it again.
“Don’t yell, mother. It might stress the baby.”
Eve smacked his arm. “AMBEE!”
She couldn’t believe him! She knew bloody well he said that to soften his mother’s anger! Whatever happened to wanting some more privacy? All of their plans just flew out the window now. Well, mostly for Eve since she knew Avery and a few others would fuss over the baby.
Ambryan recoiled but said nothing. It had only been a day and he already worried about the future ahead. If they remained secluded, who knew how many bad eating habits Eve would have? The only way for her to listen was to have more people—which was precisely why she wanted to avoid their loved ones for now.
But it was too late.
Since Avery found them, there was no point in trying to hide anymore.
“What baby—Is Eve pregnant?” Avery felt her heart skip a beat. She glanced over her shoulder, looking for her husband. “Darling, I think Eve is pregnant?”
Jackson took off his reading glasses. “Already?”
Avery turned back to the phone before he could get a response. “Hello? Hello? You two better tell me the truth or I will come right down there this instant.”
Eve sighed. “4 weeks, Aunt Avery.”
She’d deal with Ambryan later.
A piercing scream blasted out of the speaker. Eve dropped her phone in surprise. Her hands went to her ears. “AAAAHHHH…! This is magnificent news! I can’t believe this! I’m going to have a grandchild!”
“You mean, we’re going to have a grandchild,” Jackson corrected, standing by his wife’s side at once. He pressed his ear on the other side of her phone, eager to hear more.
“Yes, yes. Same thing.”
He rolled his eyes. Once his wife was too excited, nothing else could distract her.
Avery forced herself to calm down but her heart hadn’t stopped racing. All these blessings in a span of a year! She couldn’t be more grateful. “Since you’re back, when do you plan on coming home?”
Eve bit her bottom lip. She exchanges looks with Ambryan. He saw the question in her brown eyes and nodded in encouragement. What could be the harm in trying?
She picked the phone off the floor and tucked her hair behind her ear. When she spoke, her voice had softened from hesitation. “Can we have another 2 weeks to ourselves please? Our honeymoon was cut short after all.”
Avery frowned. She folded her free arm over her chest. “…And what do you mean by that?”
“She means no visits, mother,” Ambryan interrupted. He scooted closer to Eve and reached for her hand. His wife rarely had requests. If she wanted to extend their honeymoon, he’d gladly support her.
“What?! No! I won’t agree to it!” Avery huffed. She placed her hand on her hip, glaring at the window. Jackson stepped back in caution. “Pregnancy is a crucial time. You need all the support you can get.”
“How about you come to appointments?” Eve suggested. Guilt filled her chest when the other side went silent this time around. She half-regretted her words. She should have phrased it better.
“Eve… are you driving us away?”
Jackson blinked, his eyebrows shooting up. He positioned himself behind Avery and massaged her shoulders. She leaned back against him unconsciously.
Hearing the madam’s voice, Eve knew she hit deep. Ambryan wrapped his arm around her shoulders and pulled her close. “It’s not that I intend to—well, maybe I do. I’m just bummed out that my vacation was cut short.”
Avery took a deep breath. She understood a bit of Eve’s perspective now. Their itinerary was grand from what she could recall but flying wasn’t advisable at the moment. It was best for the couple to head back first.
“You can still stay at home if you want. No need to completely stop your vacation period. You both already filed your leaves,” the madam compromised.
“But I won’t get modelling projects once I start showing. That’s another long break…” Eve trailed off. It was back to work for her once they were out of hiding. She refused to laze around while she was in good condition to work.
“Right…” Avery answered. Her shoulders sagged in defeat. She turned her head and made eye contact with Jackson. He offered a small smile. Another deep sigh flowed out of her nose. “Well, one week. That’s it. We’ll see you after a week. Okay?”
Eve nearly leaped for joy. “Thank you, Aunt Avery!”
“Yan, watch what she eats. If she doesn’t listen to you, give me a call.”
Ambryan chuckled. “I will take you up on that.”
Eve pinched his side, causing her husband to jump in his seat. They had one week to themselves! It was a miracle. Both couples said their goodbyes and Eve fell on her back. She stretched her arms while the smile on her face grew wider.
“I can’t believe Aunt Avery let us go.”
“Don’t be so relaxed if I were you,” Ambryan said. He laid on his stomach beside her, drawing patterns over her abdomen. “Mother won’t let you go once the week is over. If you don’t listen, she’d hold this favor against you.”
Eve pursed her lips. He had a point. “I’ll deal with that when it comes. Right now. I. Am. On. Vacation. And no one can stop me!”
Ambryan grinned.
Then, he hovered on top of her—one hand on each side of her face.
“Undisturbed for a week…” he began to say. “I wonder what can happen in that time span.”
“As long as no one else finds we’re here you mean,” Eve joked.
“We must take every chance as if it’s the last then.” Ambryan used his knee to spread her legs apart, implying what was on his mind.
Red flags popped out on top of Eve’s head. “Now, now, Ambee… There’s a baby in the family now. Don’t you think that this is inappropriate behavior for a baby to witness?”
“But this is how a baby is made.”
“The baby doesn’t know that!”
“I’m sure the baby will still understand.”
Ambryan proceeded to undo the buttons of her pajama top. Cold air caressed Eve on the spot between her breasts. She shivered but made no move to stop him. Ambryan leaned down to kiss her on the lips. Like a magnet, she became glued to him and even lifted her head.
The TV continued playing in the background. Ambryan patted the floor for the remote, turning the movie off. His hands grazed his wife’s bare waist, massaging it a little. Eve moaned into their kiss and reached up for the back of his hair.
She could taste the pineapple on him.
The flavor seemed to suit him well.
After her waist, Ambryan sneaked upward and nudged her top off her shoulder. He broke away to leave a soft bite. No matter how many times he touched her, it never ceased to amaze him how soft she was. His hand went around her back and she arched upwards, her breath hitching.
Then, he nipped a bud with his teeth.
Eve gasped.
His other hand travelled downwards to her thighs. He pulled up her knee to the side of his hip. His fingers teased the waist belt of her pajama bottoms. The tips brushed the top of her underwear. He followed the lines to where it led him.
On the other hand, Eve wasn’t about to lose.
She traced the collar of his own pajama top until her hands found the buttons. One by one, she undid them and pushed it off him. Ambryan paused to completely take it off, throwing it aside. That moment was enough for Eve.
Her legs seized his hips and turned them over.
“Eve,” Ambryan reacted at once. “I don’t think this position would be good for the baby.”
She smirked onto his lips. “Don’t lie. You just want to take charge.”
“If I remembered right, you had moaned countless times when I did.”
“Maybe. But I also like hearing you moan,” Eve teased. She left a chaste kiss on his lips and moved downwards.
If someone was about to be naked, it wasn’t going to be her!
