Demon Legacy - Chapter 2 Headache And Solution
For Lynwood this was quickly becoming a headache. Dealing with the midwife would be easy. He could send her off somewhere and pay her to keep quiet. She’d know better than to say anything. The real question was how they could keep it under wraps and prevent others from realizing there was a demon in their home.
Lynwood looked to the other man in the room, who’d been standing quietly at the side the whole time and keeping his silence, “Burcham what can we do about this?”
“Well, it may not be as hard as you think to keep this private.” Burcham took a step forward. He was a tall skinny man in his late seventies. As the current steward of the family, he’d been serving the previous patriarch and had watched Lynwood grow up to take the seat as the head of the family.
“What do you mean?” Lynwood said.
“We can just use contacts to mask the eye color. At least in the physical aspect, there are no other differences between demons and humans that can’t be explained. Demons mature late, so for now we won’t have to worry about his horns.”
“Will that really work though? Not to mention scanners, it’d be easy even for normal people to notice.” Lynwood frowned again, considering the idea.
“Regular contacts definitely won’t be enough in the long run. We’d have to get some advanced liquid ones on the black market. As long as they’re high quality it should work. Criminals have been using those for disguises for a long time. It will be costly though. It would be best if we could get them as soon as possible, but we might have to make do with regular contacts for now. I’m not sure I can get them today.”
“That’s fine, don’t worry about the cost. I’ll trust you to take care of this, but you can’t use any of the family’s black market contacts. People would catch on, or at least question it. We can’t have people getting suspicions regarding this. Go get the regular ones immediately. If we keep him locked in this room it would only make people more suspicious.”
Burcham nodded, showing his agreement, “Which color should I get?”
Lynwood mulled over it for a moment, “Our family crest is blue. In the entire family history all of the descendants have had blue eyes. Naturally a son of mine would also be expected to inherit this.”
“Master if I may. I would recommend we get green contact lenses. If anyone was going to be skeptic about this, they would assume that you’d go for blue to uphold family tradition. All uncertainty would disappear if your son showed up with green eyes.”
Lynwood shook his head, “Just make it blue. As long as we do this right, no one should be suspicious in the first place. If I’m going to disrespect the ancestors I only want to do it once. With blue I will at least have some dignity left to face them with.”
“Understood Master, I’ll go get them immediately.”
Before the steward could leave, Lynwood added on, “Make sure you get them discreetly.”
“Of course, I’m aware of what is at stake here.”
After the steward had left, Avery stroked her husband’s arm and let him hold the baby.
“I’m so happy you agreed.” She gave him a kiss on the cheek, “It’s the right decision. We’re his parents, we’re supposed to protect him. Not send him off because of things that are out of his control.”
Holding the child in his own arms Lynwood quickly got over his doubts. “So fragile..” He muttered, low enough that his wife couldn’t hear.
“Did you say something?” Avery asked, a content smile on her face as she watched her child in the arms of the man she loved.
“No. It’s nothing.” Lynwood smiled back, before turning his attention back on the baby. Yeah, he was fragile. Harmless. Held in his arms it felt impossible that this child could grow up to be a demon.
Lynwood nuzzled the child’s cheek and spoke softly, “Kaden”
“Does this mean you give in to my choice?” Avery was surprised. They’d been discussing it for months and hadn’t been able to agree on a name.
“I guess it does. Kaden is a good name,” Lynwood sat on the bed and put his arm around his wife, leaning in he gave her a kiss on her forehead.
“What made you change your mind? You were so adamant that we go with your choice.”
“Hm.” Lynwood fell into deep thought, “I’m not sure. Is it a problem now?”
“No I’m glad. Zander is alright, but I prefer Kaden,” She said as she cuddled up against her husband, leaning her head on his chest.
It was an idyllic family moment. The new family sharing a peaceful moment. They sat in silence for a while. Subconsciously Lynwood was still a little bit conflicted. A small part of him wasn’t sure if this was the right choice. But every time he looked down at Kaden sleeping softly in his arms with not a care in the world, that small part of him turned quiet.
