Demon Legacy - Chapter 9 Distant Relationship
A year went by and Kaden had just turned seven. He’d reached the 12th level of the Body Tempering realm. Now he was at the age where he was supposed to start school.
In the Federation, kids usually started school at the age of five. However, parents who could afford it hired tutors for their kids instead. From five to seven, it was just a period of general studies. Seven years was the time where they would begin their combat training. In this regard, the children of rich and influential parents had the advantage because they had already been training seriously with martial arts teachers for years.
Of course children of poorer parents also had this chance, but it often included training in public classes where the teacher had multiple students. Or training under their own parent who didn’t have very high attainments.
The student academy Kaden would be going to was the number one in the entire Federation. It was located on the planet Aldera, the capital planet and also the planet where the Arkatal family lived, along with many of the other prestigious families.
In total there were three student academies on planet Aldera. Respectively they were boringly named the First, Second and Third Student Academy. Naturally Kaden’s school was the First Student Academy.
Since he would soon be starting school, he had received a personal com device for his birthday. Something that was necessary for all students attending an academy.
A com device was a tiny wearable computer that was worn on the arm. It acted as a communicator to send messages to other people over long-distances. The Virtual Link connection allowed one to look up anything. Also, due to that very same Virtual Link connection, it was a way to enter the Federation’s virtual world.
He’d also recieved his school uniform, sent from the school that he would be attending. Every student was required to wear a school uniform and the First Student Academy’s uniform was black and white. Prestigious families were however permitted to wear their family crest on the right chest of the uniform.
The Arkatal family crest depicted a shield with a blue two headed eagle stuck right on it. Some ancient looking motifs twisted around the shield. It complimented Kaden’s uniform nicely.
It was by far the minority that were eligible to wear their families crests. Even if Aldera was the richest planet and also the capital, there were still a wide variety of people staying here. Some were extremely well off like the Arkatal family, while others only barely managed to stay. Many people were only here because they had given birth to talented children that would be attending one of Aldera’s student academies. Or because they worked somewhere on the planet.
At the dinner table Zander was envious that Kaden would soon be going to school. He kept talking and talking, asking a bunch of questions.
Despite how different they were treated by their father, the two brothers had still grown close over the years.
Other kids at their age went to school for their general studies and met a lot of other kids. When they were younger and the two wanted to play, they only had each other to play with. They rarely met other children except the rare gatherings between the various elites.
Kaden enjoyed having a younger brother though it did get a bit annoying when he got too clingy. One example was when Burcham had started training Kaden, Zander also wanted to take part. When he was told that he would have to wait two years to begin training, he cried for a long time until he simply forgot about the matter.
Children were easy to handle in that regard. They were quick to cry, but they were even quicker to forget why they were crying in the first place.
The next morning was Kaden’s first day of school.
Kaden was standing dressed in his black academy uniform. The blue crest complimented his fake blue eyes. Just standing there at his tall stature, there was a certain royal aura to him. He had grown up to be a handsome child.
Looking in the mirror, he was also satisfied with the reflection looking back at him. At least till he noticed his eyes. Looking at them made him frown. Ever since his mother had talked to him about his demon bloodline, he had come to despise these fake blue eyes of his.
He was superior to these humans with average potential, yet he was forced to hide behind these contact lenses. The innate pride of royalty within him detested having to do this.
Taking out his contact lenses he looked at the mirror again, much more pleased this time.
His time of admiring was cut short when someone came knocking on the door.
“Just a second.” He called out and in a rush he put the contact lenses back in. Like liquid they spread evenly across his eyes and set in to place.
He confirmed the contact lenses were working when he saw the fake blue eyes staring back at him, “Come in.”
“Oh my, Young Master you look dashing!” Sophie said as she entered, her face lit up by her bright smile. She’d matured quite a bit over time. Four years ago when she started taking care of Kaden’s medicinal baths she was just 16. Now she was a mature woman at 20 years of age. With time she had also become more familiar with Kaden, acting much more at ease around him.
“Let’s get going.” Kaden said.
“One moment Young Master, your father said he wanted to say some words to you before you leave.”
“Really?” Kaden raised an eyebrow, it was incredibly rare for him to talk to his father, “Alright. Where is he?”
Sophie took him to his father’s study where Kaden stepped in and shut the door behind him. Sophie would wait outside.
“Father I’m here.” Kaden walked in, standing before his father’s desk. This was probably the first time he’d been here.
Lynwood stepped out from behind the desk, coming closer and stopping before Kaden. He took a moment to look his son up and down, judging his appearance. He gave a look of satisfaction, “You look well dressed. The uniform suits you.”
“Thank you father.” Kaden responded with a polite nod.
“Are you ready for your first day?”
“Yes.”
The exchanges between the two were short and awkward. They didn’t behave like father and son at all.
“I won’t keep you then. Go on now.” Lynwood waved him out. He didn’t have too many words to say to this son of his. Mostly he was just anxious. Scared that this demon son of his would do something to shame the family. Seeing him before he left eased his worries.
“I understand, I’ll be going now.” Without any words of goodbye exchanged between the two, Kaden left the study and returned to Sophie.
“Are you ready Young Master?” Sophie was a bit perplexed. Kaden had barely been in the room for a minute. She thought that Lynwood would have a bit more to say.
“Yeah, let’s go.” Kaden turned on his heels, leading the way down the hallway. In the first place he hadn’t been expecting anything different. He didn’t know how to face this father of his, and his father certainly didn’t know how to face him.
