Did Not Say Anything About My Feelings - Chapter 20. Dance
Lin Ye did not manage to hear what Jiang Lian truly thought. The sudden music from the big classroom interrupted them. Lin Ye stood up in surprise and walked over to pull the curtains aside a little. He saw Yan Changfei humming the lyrics and doing a warm-up in front of the floor-length mirror.
It had only been an hour since the beginning of the afternoon break. It would be a lie for Lin Ye to say that he was not shocked. He no longer looked at Jiang Lian who was behind him and pushed the door to walk out of the small classroom and said to Yan Changfei, “Are you practicing your dance? Count me in.”
Yan Changfei was also surprised to see him and even joked, “I didn’t expect that one day I would see the person with the least practice time in the team in the practice room during the afternoon break. It looks like my character as the hardworking one is going to be taken away.”
Lin Ye started to stretch his legs. He smiled when he heard those words, “If I continue to not work hard, I’ll be letting down the ‘leader’ title that you guys gave me.”
He practiced the whole afternoon with Yan Changfei but did not see Jiang Lian come out of the small classroom at all. When they stopped to take a break in the middle of practice, Lin Ye walked to the door and glanced into the small classroom.
The door that was connected to the corridor was still locked and the down jacket that had been hanging on the camera had disappeared. Jiang Lian was no longer in the small classroom. All that was left was the magazine that the other had used as a pillow, laying on the floor alone.
He knew that Jiang Lian had the key to the small classroom and thus, Lin Ye was not surprised about Jiang Lian’s sudden disappearance. His gaze returned to the closed fashion magazine on the floor.
No one in the entire practice room brought magazines to read, and he had never seen any fashion magazines in Jiang Lian’s dormitory.
Lin Ye walked over, bending down to pick up the magazine that had appeared from nowhere, and proceeded to flip through it very casually.
The magazine was published last month and there were many recent popular makeup styles inside as well as some tutorials on matching clothes. Lin Ye did not like to look at such things so he closed the magazine and threw the magazine back down on the floor.
Yan Changfei called his name from outside and Lin Ye turned his head on hearing him. From the corner of his eyes, he noticed that when the magazine fell on the floor, there was a little bit of wind, which caused a pink post-it to float up before silently landing on the dimly lit floor.
Lin Ye was stunned for a moment before he walked forward and bent over to pick it up, his expression as normal. He put the post-it back into the magazine and picked up the magazine he had thrown down before walking out.
Yan Changfei had already recovered his strength and his body was moving vigorously to the rhythm of the music. Lin Ye walked to the corner of the classroom and placed the magazine under his down jacket.
Finally, he walked back to Yan Changfei’s side as if nothing had happened. His actions were natural as he followed the other’s dance rhythm.
In the afternoon, their vocal teacher came to give them an intensive lesson. Group A’s Cheng Chi and Qi Huan were very late, so the teacher started the one-on-one guidance session from Group B.
The members of the two groups ‘Eye of the Typhoon’ were trainees that were quite high ranked. Therefore, the teacher was much more relaxed when teaching and guiding them. The only one that had issues was the Class C trainee from Group B. He had been assigned the part with high notes. Although he managed to hit the note, his voice cracked.
The trainees that were watching at the side instantly burst into laughter. Wen Mian, who had been sitting by the wall and listening instantly laughed and fell on Lin Ye’s shoulder.
Lin Ye tried to control his laughter as he pushed Wen Mian’s head away, turning his face to look at Jiang Lian who was sitting on the other side.
Not only did the other not smile, he even splashed a bucket of cold water on his head, “It won’t be late for you to laugh after you’ve practiced the parts you’re singing.”
Lin Ye’s face instantly lost all traces of a smile.
However, Wen Mian who was next to him laughed even louder.
After the one-on-one consult for Team B ended, Cheng Chi and Qi Huan who had overslept finally hurried to the classroom.
The six people in Team A queued up in a horizontal line and sang the whole song once. The vocal teacher started to give comments from the two most stable singers, Jiang Lian and Wen Mian. Most of the comments were compliments and the vocal teacher clearly pointed out that all the two of them needed to do was to maintain their current state till the day of the performance.
After that, the vocal teacher gave comments for Chang Fei and the other two in one go. The vocal teacher gave some suggestions and stated that the three of them still had room for progress and can do better.
And lastly, when the vocal teacher looked at Lin Ye, he frowned, “The parts where you sing with others are alright, can you sing your part for me again?”
Lin Ye sang his part again while the teacher was watching him. When he opened his mouth, he felt his voice tighten slightly.
The vocal teacher smiled, “I heard that you were very confident during the dance batter with Wen Mian in the morning. When I was talking next door, my voice was almost drowned out by the yells from your side. Why are you nervous when it comes to singing?”
Only then did Lin Ye relax a little and lift his gaze to smile.
However, the vocal teacher stopped smiling and became serious, “Lin Ye, once you go on stage, the microphone will infinitely amplify any defects in your voice. We cannot solve the issue of lack of breath overnight, but for this part, you need to try to sing in a lower key, otherwise, it’ll be easy for you to go out of tune.
Lin Ye tried a few times but could not manage to hit the correct key.
The vocal teacher frowned but said after a moment, “If you truly can’t manage to sing at a lower key, there are other methods. Ask Wen Mian or Jiang Lian to help you sing backup to cushion the sound.”
(T/N: Not super sure what the cushioning thing is, but after I searched it up, I think it basically means like the backing tracks at a KTV? Like a backing track basically, but here, he’s asking Wen Mian or Jiang Lian to help Lin Ye by fulfilling the role of a backing track.)
After he ended with this classroom, the vocal teacher went to another classroom.
Wen Mian threw his arm around Lin Ye’s shoulder and suggested, “I’ll sing backup for you?”
Lin Ye did not respond. Wen Mian was the lead singer in the team. After his high note, it was Lin Ye’s part. The two parts were following one after another, and the high-note really tires the voice, so he was worried that Wen Mian would not be able to do both.
Compared to Wen Mian, it seemed that Jiang Lian was a better choice.
He raised his gaze and looked at Jiang Lian, but the other had his head turned and was talking to Yan Changfei. He seemed to be indifferent as if this matter had nothing to do with him. He did not show any intention of wanting to help him from the start to the end.
Lin Ye was feeling very troubled and did not know what to do.
The trainees stayed in the classroom for an hour more. It was only around five in the afternoon that they slowly started to end their practice, leaving in groups.
Ming Rang stayed in the classroom to help team members to point out mistakes in their dance individually and Jiang Lian was waiting for him to eat dinner at the canteen together. Thus, Jiang Lian did not leave early and simply went to the washroom in the middle.
When Lin Ye saw this, he left the dance formation suddenly and followed him out.
He did not catch up to Jiang Lian, he simply followed behind a distance away. When Jiang Lian entered the washroom, Lin Ye stopped at the wall outside to wait for him.
After thinking about it, Lin Ye decided to ask Jiang Lian anyway. If the other was willing to help, that would be good. If the other was unwilling to help, it was also reasonable.
After all, everyone felt that the reward for winning the team competition was not very important to Jiang Lian and he did not really need it. He did not have any reason to doubt that Jiang Lian would not be in first place even without the votes from the reward of winning the live performance.
On the contrary, the people that truly needed those votes should be the others.
Before this, Jiang Lian had helped him twice. The first time was before the theme song evaluation and had been exchanged with Lin Ye doing him a favor by not reporting him. The second time was yesterday night, and Lin Ye guessed that that probably depended on the other’s mood at that time.
Lin Ye lowered his gaze and leaned against the wall. He could not help getting absorbed in his thoughts and did not immediately notice when Jiang Lian walked out from the washroom.
He only noticed when Jiang Lian stopped in front of him and opened his mouth to ask, “Do you have something to say?”
Only then did Lin Ye return to his senses and nod his head, saying, “Yes.”
Jiang Lian did not seem shocked but he did not bring up the matter either and simply asked him, “What did you want to say?”
Lin ye said, “The matter that the teacher was talking about just now, I—”
Jiang Lian directly interrupted him, “You want me to help you?”
Lin Ye nodded his head again and looked at Jiang Lian.
Jiang Lian put his index finger against his chin and pondered, “What’s the reason?”
Lin Ye used the reason that even he did not believe.
Jiang Lian’s response was as expected. Lin Ye did not feel very upset and instead nodded his head to admit, “What you said was true. If I made a mistake on stage, the fans would only feel that I am not good. They would not feel that my five teammates are bad.”
“It’s good that you understand,” Jiang Lian’s expression was mild, “The essence of the program is competition and elimination, and not helping the weak. Helping the weak won’t help you debut. Competing for more screentime and eliminating others is what will help you debut.”
Lin Ye turned around silently.
“But,” Jiang Lian laughed from behind him, “I didn’t say that I won’t help you.”
Lin Ye turned his head back suddenly, looking at Jiang Lian with burning eyes.
“Don’t look at me with that sort of gaze,” Jiang Lian’s voice was low with one hand in his pocket. He walked towards the safe corridor that did not have any cameras, “I can help you, but just this time. What do you plan to give me in exchange this time?”
Lin Ye asked, “What do you want?”
Jiang Lian raised his hand to push open the main door in the corridor, “I haven’t thought of what I want yet.”
Lin Ye followed close behind but did not expect Jiang Lian to suddenly stop walking, causing him to walk into him.
The next second, Jiang Lian turned his body to the side and showed the three trainees from ‘Eye of the Typhoon’ Team B that were sitting in a circle in the corridor and looking at a phone
He asked mildly, “What are the three of you looking at?”
It seemed that they had reached the interesting part. When they suddenly heard someone speaking, the three trainees were completely caught off guard. They raised their faces in shock.
Lin Ye followed Jiang Lian and walked forward.
It was too late to cover up the content of the videos on the phone. Lin Ye glanced at it and showed an indescribably complex look.
When one of them saw that the matter had reached this point, he decided to go straight to the point and test the waters, trying to pull them into the situation, “Do the two of you… want to watch together?”
He did not even like women, so what was the use of him looking. Lin Ye politely rejected, “The three of you can be so immersed despite there being no sound?”
The three of them kept their phones and stood up from the stairway. One of them spoke quickly, beginning to speak hesitantly as he complained, “If it was not for you dancing that girl group dance this morning. We are all guys here, I have what you have, and what I don’t have, you don’t have either. So we could only make do with watching videos…”
Lin Ye instantly felt a headache.
The person talking finally shut up after noticing his friends’ signals. Their gazes flashed and they left the corridor, not feeling guilty at all.
Before they left, they even talked nicely to Lin Ye and Jiang Lian, asking them to help keep the fact they hid a phone a secret.
Jiang Lian did not make a sound the whole time.
When the sounds of their footsteps finally disappeared, he turned his face to Lin Ye.
“I thought about it,” his gaze swept past Lin Ye’s face, “You can dance.”
Lin Ye’s eyelid twitched, having a bad feeling in his heart, “What dance?”
Jiang Lian lifted his gaze and said lightly, “The girl group dance you danced this afternoon.”
