- Chapter 400: New Operation Base (3) End of Volume 4
“Chief engineer, I need you to head south and rendezvous with our incoming crew members. Tell them we have company coming at us from the northeast direction.”
“Combatants. Move forward without me. I’ll come after I’m done giving out several instructions. Remember, anything that mingles with the zombies is a virus carrier, no matter they’re wearing our uniform or not. Shoot to kill.” Zhang Qin Feng said.
“Yes, Boss!” the combatants left upwards while the Chief engineer moved opposite the direction they were going.
In the meantime, Zhang Qin Feng prep the remaining crews to pack up and get inside a temporary fortified building with supplies enough for an entire month inside.
After settling the non-combatants inside a safe building, Zhang Qin Feng made his way towards the northeastern direction. He finds it weird because not a single gunshot was fired after so long.
‘Check for an anomaly, Stein. It’s impossible for there to be no gunshots, especially when the one coming at us is a horde of zombies.’ Zhang Qin Feng instructed the system as he picked up his speed towards the engagement point.
There’s a hint of worry written on his face as he finds that the five combatants are facing the horde without movement from both sides.
[Toot… The system found no anomalies from the five combatant’s Luna Device Health Report. But their irregular heartbeat states they’re facing something terrifying right now]
[Advising the user to maintain high alert]
The system communicates with Zhang Qin Feng while he’s making a sprint towards the engagement point.
Even Zhang Qin Feng was surprised when he finally arrived at where the combatants were. To his surprise, the horde of zombies wasn’t a scattered pile of walking zombies but a blob of moving flesh with zombies getting digested inside.
The readings of a horde came from this moving fleshy blob. It was like a slime, but at the same time, it doesn’t look as cute as the one from the games. This thing here was representative of gore, blood, and all kinds of nightmarish thought.
“Boss!” one of the combatants gently took a few steps back. He looks worried that his sudden movement would attract the blob’s attention if it has an acute sense and volatile temper.
“Explain the situation to me. What you have observed so far?” Zhang Qin Feng asked. The team arrived roughly ten minutes before him, so they must have seen more than he does.
“Except for the weird movement and bizarre-looking digestive system, this being shows no threat to us so far. But we aren’t sure what it actually was.” said the combatant.
“Shall we engage, Boss?” they’re waiting for Zhang Qin Feng’s permission. If they engaged, the soldiers would likely get the attention of this mutant, but if they don’t, it might crawl its way slowly to the beacon site they’ve captured.
At that time, more casualties could be expected.
‘Stein, your suggestion?’ Zhang Qin Feng raised his palm before the combatant beside him to stop him from speaking. This way, he can listen to the system’s suggestion if it has any.
[The system has no file related to this mutant. But based on the record available, it was believed that this thing came from a particular waste disposal system. The Carmine Union likely designing something like this to help with their waste management system]
[If the host is willing to put a bet that another mutant like this would appear as we get further into the continent, the system suggests the host eliminate this threat]
‘Reason for the suggestion, Stein?’ Zhang Qin Feng continued.
[Reason one: Service Base still in construction. Condition is immature for the user to treat everything as a research subject]
[Reason two: We have limited knowledge about this continent and manpower to help understand it faster. This made destroying everything is the better option instead of learning everything]
Stein could give Zhang Qin Feng over ten reasons but believed that two would be enough to convince the host.
“I’ve decided, boys. Distance ourselves and get rid of this monster. Since the recording cam is working, activate them so we can study the recording later when we have enough manpower to do so.” Zhang Qin Feng said.
His order quickly made everyone take a few steps back and equipped themselves with a Chain-Lightning in their hand. The Decimator Launcher tubes were also armed and ready just in case they needed some extra firepower.
After everyone had distanced themselves and prepared, Zhang Qin Feng gave the order to open fire.
“Now!” he pointed at the mutant before putting his hand back on the minigun’s trigger. The six of them immediately pelted the mutant with over a thousand bullets in less than one-sixth of a minute.
Since the mutant had no vocal cord or whatsoever, it could not create a sound if it was in pain or unaffected. But the six of them know that their current firepower won’t be enough to kill this thing so swiftly.
And like how they expected it, the mutant carelessly squirmed around with its body mass, unaffected by all the attacks so far. Furthermore, it was unfazed by everything that happened a while ago. It continued to move towards the beacon site like it was called to go over there.
“Continue to open fire!” Zhang Qin Feng begins to feel a hint of troubling now. Putting aside the empty Chain-Lightning minigun in his hand, he pulled the Decimator Launcher. He fired right at the blob coming towards him.
*Boom!*
It was unaffected. But fire seems to be something that could deter this mutant as the spot where Zhang Qin Feng attacked seems to be slightly burnt.
“Change to Decimator Launchers, everyone! We have to stop this thing from going further!” said Zhang Qin Feng as he let go of the tube and left the reloading to his Exo-Skeleton automatic function.
*Boom! Boom! Boom!*
The combatants quickly followed Zhang Qin Feng’s instructions in their effort to stall this mutant from moving forward. But evidently, their firepower is barely enough to even keep it still for more than a minute.
“What should we do, Boss?” the combatants are out of ideas. They were even out of the warheads needed to reload their Decimator Launcher.
