Disturbed - Chapter 3 The Pas
“Hey, bud! Come out already!” said by a small voice, it was my partner and he was knocking at his car’s window while calling for me. I came to realize that my mind has drifted somewhere. I opened the car and stepped outside.
“What happened?” he said with a worried face.
I put my hands on the shoulders of my partner and I straightly looked at him in the eye, “That son of that protester out there? He was tipped off and his name appeared in the master list, he is guilty.” I said then I walked past him. He was dumbfounded.
When we entered the police station, my partner was still nagging me about the meaning of the thing that I have said. I just brushed him off. I went directly to my cubicle and took my seat. My partner, hearing no answer from me just went directly to his own table.
I was typing a case report when the door of the police station opened. Our captain entered. We immediately rose from our seats and greeted him with a salute.
“Good morning, boys!” he cheerfully said.
“Tonight, we will be doing another drug bust operation. The details will be discussed at ten o’clock so make sure that you are all here by that time so none of you will mess the thing up,” he added.
“Sir, yes sir!” we answered in chorus. He went directly into his office and he closed its door. We all get back to what we have been doing.
Time flies in the office. At ten o’clock, we had the meeting about the raid that we will be doing, it was about an operation in which teenagers are involved. Five hours later, the surveillance team was dispatched to secure the perimeter of the location that we will be raiding. Meanwhile, some of us who are in charge of the infiltration remained in the office and continued doing office works.
“Are you nervous for later?” said my partner as he placed a cup of coffee in my table. I was too engrossed with my work that I have forgotten that I have not taken any food since breakfast.
“Thanks,” I said as I held the cup of coffee. I took a sip; it was hot yet delicious. “Of course, I am nervous but I am also excited. We will be straightening the paths of these lost children,” I furthered. My partner just gave a nod as a sign of agreement. He was heading back to his table area when he stopped and looked back at me.
“I’ve been wondering for a long time now. Why are you very in to it? I mean this war on drugs. Why do you care so much and why do you hate those users and pushers?” he asked.
I stared at him for a while, finding my words.
“Because, the likes of them are no use in the society,” I started. “They only bring pain in their own families and of other people’s families” I paused then my voice cracked, “The likes of them took my wife away”
It was five years ago when everything was fine except me who has fallen to a cold. My body was heavy and my head aches terribly. My wife, being the caring one decided to bring me to a hospital for a checkup.
In the hospital, the routine checkup was conducted to me. They have checked on my temperature, the recurrence of my fever, duration of my cold and they also auscultated my heart and lungs and took some blood samples. A couple of minutes later, they diagnosed a bacterial infection. The doctor has prescribed a lot of medicine.
We were in our way home. My head was leaning on the car window while I was looking in the sky when she suddenly checked on me, “Hey, does you head still hurts?” she inquired.
“No, honey. I feel a lot better now.” I replied while giving her a reassuring smile. She freed her right hand and caressed my face. “I hate it when you are sick.”
“I know.”
When we were at the market place, she suddenly pulled over.
“I need to buy your medicine, just wait in here.” She said as she stepped out of the car. I just gave her a nod.
Almost 20 minutes have passed yet my wife hasn’t come back. I went outside the car and started looking for her. I haven’t gotten far from where our car was parked when I saw a crowd gathering around the market pharmacy. I noticed that there are uniformed police officer around the perimeter. I went to check what is happening.
“Release the hostage and we will guarantee your safety,” said by a police officer. It came to my mind that it is a hostage situation.
When finally, I was able to get a good vision of the event, my blood run cold when I saw that it is my wife who has been taken hostage. I immediately ran to one of the police officers.
“Sir, you cannot be in here,” the officer said as I approached.
“I’m an officer, and that hostage is my wife!” I yelled. “How in the world did she got in there!?” I raged.
“The police were chasing after this man who have been found as a drug user. As he escaped, he went to the pharmacy, snatched the gun of the security guard and at that time your wife who was just entering was hold up and taken as his hostage,” explained by the officer holding me off the area.
“Sir, I repeat please release the host” the one speaking was not able to finish what he was saying for the drug user holding my wife suddenly fired a shot and the whole market burst into panic and chaos. I heard another gunshot and the turmoil intensified. Someone bumped into me and to the cop who has been holding me; we fell down on the ground. As I crawled my way to where my wife is, I saw her in the ground, her head bleeding. The drug user pointed the gun to his head and in an instant, he was with my wife— on the ground, blood seeping and breathes gone.
for visiting.
“So that is why, guilty or not as long as their names appeared on the master list, as long as they are accused of selling and using drugs— they will be eliminated.” I said to my partner as I gained my composure.
“I’m so sorry about your wife. I never knew…,” he said, face frowned in concern. I gave him a nod.
“Gear up boys! We will now be moving,” yelled by the chief officer as he got out of his office. Everyone moved out of their respective seats and started preparing.
