Douluo Dalu: Wulin’s Legend - Chapter 121 What's That Smell?
Wulin watched the little girl run away with a slightly confused smile on his face, wondering why Little Niu hated them so much.
Wulin was about to follow the girl to see what was going on, but the Village Chief intercepted him.
“M-Masters, what are you doing here?” The Village Chief quickly stood in front of Wulin and Ning Yuzi.
Despite his attempt to sound calm, his face betrayed him as his shock at the arrival of the two of them was apparent.
“Yuzi, I am going to follow her. You deal with the situation here.” Wulin said as he strode past the Village Chief.
The Village Chief was once more shocked by Wulin’s movements and was about to stop him again.
However, just as he was going to move, he felt a crushing pressure that immobilised him.
Ning Yuzi followed Wulin’s order and spoke with more power in his voice, “All of you will stay here.”
Four Spirit Rings appeared from within Ning Yuzi’s body, two yellow, and two purple.
Everyone in the room, besides Wulin, was pressured by Ning Yuzi’s Spirit Power. The three middle-aged people were forced onto their knees as sweat ran down their foreheads.
The Village Chief couldn’t move his eyes away from Ning Yuzi. He had never seen a Spirit Master with such a perfect Spirit Ring Configuration.
The Village Chief himself only had two white Spirit Rings, and two yellow Spirit Rings.
The Village Chief was much more fearful now that he realised how much more powerful Ning Yuzi was than him.
Wulin left Ning Yuzi to keep them company and followed Little Niu deeper into the house.
He quickly arrived at a small room. Wulin peeked inside and found Little Niu, frantically pushing a tiny buttock out of the single window.
The strange thing was, above the tiny buttock was a long scaly tail with ridges running along the top side.
It was a typical reptilian tail, and it was swaying from side to side as the legs of the tiny buttock flailed about.
Wulin was shocked to find this scene awaiting him, but he was also a little amused by the little girl’s attempt to flee.
He wondered if the girl with the reptilian tail, likely Pachong, was an Evolved Spirit Beast like Little Jing and Xiao Wu.
“Chong Chong, stop swishing your tail around! I can’t push you out like this!” Little Niu cried out.
Her sweet little voice, combined with her cute actions was very adorable.
Pachong’s lizard-like tail was constantly swatting at Little Niu’s hands, like a reflex for every time Little Niu touched her.
After a little more struggling, Little Niu finally pushed Pachong out of the window, causing her to fall face-first onto the ground.
“Owch!” Pachong cried from outside.
“Haha…” Wulin couldn’t help but chuckle when he heard the little girl fall onto the ground clumsily.
However, his voice alerted Little Niu as she looked at Wulin like a frightened rabbit.
And just like a scared rabbit would, she hopped out of the window in an instant, but her foot got caught against the windowsill, and she also landed face-first onto the ground.
“Ouchie!”
Tears threatened to stream down Little Niu’s face, but she bravely held back and got back onto her feet.
Pachong was already up and anxiously helped Little Niu to her feet, “Niu, let’s run quickly! I don’t want to die!”
Little Niu nodded her head firmly, before holding Pachong’s hand and running away from the house.
Wulin knew they were probably scared for their lives, but he couldn’t help but think it was cute for recently awakened Spirit Masters to try and run from a Spirit King.
However, he couldn’t let them get hurt while they were running, so he decided to follow them.
He jumped out the window smoothly and watched the girls run out of the village under the surprised watch of nearby villagers.
Wulin only smiled and followed them from a distance, while also taking the opportunity to use his Observation Ability on them.

Wulin read their information. Little Niu with her level 9 Spirit Power was considered very talented, and her Spirit was a Body Spirit!
Body Spirits are one of the rarest types of Spirits that can awaken. They are always associated with some part of the Spirit Master’s body.
Little Niu’s Spirit Skin in particular sounds like it could become quite a strong Defence or Offense System Spirit.
No matter what, though, it would be a waste of a perfectly versatile Spirit if the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Clan did not properly nurture little Niu.
As for Pachong, her Spirit and Spirit Power were only average. However, her body and Spirit seemed to have fused to make her look like a mutant.
Wulin thought she was an Evolved Spirit Beast before, but that doesn’t seem to be the case.
Because of her fusion, some of the villagers must have condemned her as a monster due to their uneducated fear.
Luckily, some of the villagers, the Village Chief included, saw her as only a weak and unfortunate child, so she was allowed to stay in the village.
Wulin slowly followed the two little girls as he observed them from a distance. He wanted to see how good these girls were and how strong their friendship was.
In her attempt to lose track of Wulin, Little Niu led Pachong into a forest. Wulin thought it was a pretty bad decision on her behalf.
Wulin was already stronger than her, so his chances of surviving in the forest were significantly better than her and Pachong’s.
It was more likely for Little Niu and Pachong’s death to accelerate by entering the forest since they are only lowly ranked Spirit Masters with zero combat experience.
However, they probably didn’t put much thought into it and went into an area where they could try to lose him.
Wulin sped up a bit, so he would be able to react in time should they encounter a Spirit Beast they couldn’t handle.
And it was fortunate that Wulin made this decision because the girls were unlucky enough to cross paths with a Spirit Beast shortly after entering the forest.
Right in front of them, a three-metre tall giant Boar was feasting on the carcass of a large Deer Type Spirit Beast.
The Boar had thick brown fur. That, when tangled together, forms an impenetrable shield that protects the Spirit Beast from danger. It was a Ground Fur Boar.
The girls stopped in their tracks. Their large eyes were bulging as they stared at the feasting tank of a Spirit Beast in fear.
Fortunately for them, the Boar was faced away from the two girls, so it hadn’t noticed their presence yet.
Instead, it continued to devour the dead Deer Type Spirit Beast with vigour, fresh blood smearing its face and tusks.
The Ground Fur Boar oinked and snorted as it dug into the carcass viciously, swinging its head from side to side as it ruthlessly tore flesh from the carcass.
The faces of Little Niu and Pachong turned deathly pale as they held their breaths, not daring to alert the Ground Fur Boar in the slightest.
Together, the two of them backed away ever so slightly. Sweat began to perspire on their foreheads as they stared at the Ground Fur Boar intently.
*Crack!*
Suddenly, the sound of a twig snapping pierced the quiet air as Little Niu and Pachong’s eyes popped wide open.
The Ground Fur Boar immediately spun around with a shocked grunt. It fixated its large eyes on the two tiny children in front of it.
A look of fury washed over the Ground Fur Boar’s face as it kicked against the ground and huffed air out of its nose angrily.
Large, snake-like blood vessels bulged from its eyes as it stared down Little Niu and Pachong.
The blood-soaked fur and smeared tusks was an especially terrifying sight. There was even a small piece of flesh still attached to the Ground Fur Boar’s mouth.
Obviously, the Ground Fur Boar was about to charge at Little Niu and Pachong and trample them under its feet.
It had noticed that Little Niu and Pachong were not predators. And in this world, not being a predator meant being a prey.
“REEEEEEEEEEE!” The Ground Fur Boar screeched out angrily before charging at the two girls like a massive tank.
In return, Little Niu and Pachong let out a banshee’s squeal and threw their hands in the air, desperately running back the way they came.
“Mommy!”
Their vision blurred by the tears flowing down their faces as they fled from the Ground Fur Boar as quickly as they could.
However, being a Spirit Beast with a couple of hundred years under its belt, the Ground Fur Boar was rapidly catching up to them.
“Ah!”
Suddenly, the long and uncontrollable lizard tail got tangled with Pachong’s feet, causing her to stumble and fall to her knees, scratching them against the hard ground.
Little Niu also noticed Pachong falling over and hesitated for a moment. If she left her behind, Little Niu could run away and possibly return to the village.
But, Pachong would be sure to die, Little Niu would never be able to see her best friend again.
Tears flowed down her eyes, but Little Niu still decided to return to Pachong’s side.
Little Niu rushed to Pachong and knelt by her side, taking in the sight of her scraped knees as a result of falling at full speed on loose sticks and twigs.
“Chong Chong… Are you okay?” Little Niu touched Pachong’s shoulder gently and asked.
Pachong quickly lifted her head to see Little Niu’s concerned expression, and she was quickly overridden with guilt and anxiety.
“Niu, what are you still doing here! You should run away quickly!” Pachong used her hands to push Little Niu away as she cried out.
However, Little Niu had already made her decision and shook her head, “I will not leave you. Chong Chong, you are my best friend.”
Tears were still flowing down their eyes as they stared at each other.
“I am just a monster child… Why? Why are you going so far to save me? Hic…” Pachong choked out a sad question to Little Niu.
Little Niu struggled to smile under the deadly scenario and gently grabbed Pachong’s hand, “You are not a monster. You are Chong Chong, the same best friend I have had since I was a baby!”
Both of them were getting choked up as tears and snot ran down their faces; they knew their deaths were inevitable by this point.
“Silly Niu, you could have lived if you just ran away… Sob… Now we are going to both die.” Pachong sobbed tearfully.
Little Niu looked at the bloodthirsty Ground Fur Boar; it was getting closer with every passing second.
Soon, it would be on top of them and piercing their bodies with its sharp tusks or crushing their bones by trampling on them with its immense weight.
Despite running far away from its feeding ground, the Ground Fur Boar was unrelenting in its pursuit to kill the two kids.
Little Niu moved her body to stand in between Pachong and the furious Ground Fur Boar.
“Niu! What are you doing!?” Pachong disregarded the bleeding scrapes on her knees and turned around quickly.
“It’s alright, Pachong… I will protect you…” Little Niu turned her head and gave Pachong a small smile before looking back at the boar.
As she stared at the approaching boar, Little Niu could feel her heart beating in sync with the ground as it shook with the weight of the Ground Fur Boar.
A light glow began to appear all over her skin as she used her unique Body Spirit, Spirit Skin.
It couldn’t do much right now, but it increased her physical strength and defence by a small amount.
The Ground Fur Boar didn’t care for her pitiful attempt at defence and screeched out menacingly. It had finally reached them.
Now faced so closely with the Ground Fur Boar, Little Niu could see just how terrifying it looked, and she became frozen with fear.
In the end, her legs went completely limp, and she shut her eyes tightly, completely overcome with fear as she waited for her demise.
However, after waiting for a couple of seconds, the expected pain of death did not arrive.
Little Niu wondered if she had died so quickly that she didn’t even realise until she heard an unfamiliar voice.
