Empty Promises: The Ceo Cunning Bride - Chapter 198
“I can’t sleep in wet clothes.” Yang Zheyan looked up at her and c.o.c.ked his head to the side. He grinned, fully aware of what he did, and her reactions finished it. “Someone’s having dirty thoughts.”
“You’re the only one who has time for those types of thoughts!” Xiong Jingfei grabbed a pillow and threw it at him. “Careful, the next one might happen to smother you in your sleep.”
Xiong Jingfei had her back turned while he was changing. He put on his sleepwear as he chuckled and lightly coughed. He threw the rest of his wet clothes on the floor next to her trench coat.
“You can rest now. We can talk more when you’re better.” Xiong Jingfei made her way to the door that connects their rooms. “Ah!”
“You’re not going anywhere.” Yang Zheyan threw her over his shoulders. “How can you leave a sick person alone?”
“Why are you acting like this is your first time getting sick!?” Xiong Jingfei kicked her legs as the door connecting their rooms was getting further away from her. “Ahh!”
Yang Zheyan tossed her on his bed. He laid down next to her, trapping her with his arms and legs. In a husky voice, “I don’t recall the last time I was sick. I hate being sick…”
“And?” Xiong Jingfei can see why Nanny Liu looked shocked to hear Yang Zheyan got sick. How can a person not get sick at least a few times in their life?
“I’m tired… Please stay here tonight.” Yang Zheyan mumbled, hugging her like one would hug a pillow. “I can’t fall asleep knowing you’re not next to me. Just for tonight. I won’t do anything to you…”
Xiong Jingfei didn’t bother to struggle or fight him to sleep in the other room. She knew he wasn’t going to do anything, and he only wanted her to stay by his side for tonight.
“Okay. I won’t leave, so go to sleep.”
Xiong Jingfei pulled the blanket to cover his body, but frozen when he muttered, “Past life and reincarnation… Did I do something to you in the past? Is that why you hate me?”
The rain and thundering came to a stop not long after they entered his house. Right now, in the quiet dark room and empty house, it felt like the world only had them.
“I’m sorry-”
“Didn’t I tell you to go to sleep?” Xiong Jingfei covered his mouth with her hand. She didn’t want to hear an apology from him when he doesn’t know what he’s done to be sorry.
Yang Zheyan did as told. Eventually, his breathing became quieter and evenly as he fell asleep, but sleep didn’t come to her easily. His arms wrapped around her didn’t move out of place, afraid he wouldn’t feel it when she escaped him again.
Running away was a temporary thing for Xiong Jingfei; she never planned on running away from Yang Zheyan for the rest of her life. She needed time to calm down, and Yin Yuan gave her a place to do that.
Yang Zheyan doesn’t like it when he gets sick—making it the reason why he became a person with mysophobia. He will be exposed to all sorts of threats, such as poison, assassin, and more, while in a weakened state. Although that was something of the past, it still latched onto him in his lifetime.
Tonight, Xiong Jingfei chose to stay by his side in his most vulnerable state.
“I obviously don’t want to kill you.” Xiong Jingfei lightly brushed his eyelashes with her index fingers. “I can crush you right now if I wanted.”
Will you remember anything we talked about tomorrow?
“Feifei, why are you so mean to me?” Yang Zheyan mumbled in his sleep with a frown on his face. “I used to be so nice to you when you were younger.”
Xiong Jingfei’s heart almost stopped when she thought he had woken up.
“I used to bring you a lot of things… Sneaked into your courtyard…”
Xiong Jingfei waited to hear more from him, but that was it to his sleep talk. She pressed her lips into a thin line, “Seriously, why do you remember the trivial things?”
She sat up and leaned her back on the bed headrest. Yang Zheyan slightly stirred, feeling movements coming from her, but he didn’t open his eyes.
To say that I only had bad memories with Yang Zheyan, I would be lying to myself. My happy memories of the past consistently had him in the picture, and he was the reason I was happy during those times. He was kind to me, just like he mumbled in his sleep. He opened a new world I’ve never seen.
He brought me to a market and didn’t care if I acted like a child. He came every other night to bring me something new to see or eat. What he brought me from the outside world was a taste of what freedom would’ve felt. Those things may seem little, but he was able to capture my heart one piece at a time until it became his’s completely.
I didn’t care that he was the Right Prime Minister’s son, nor did I care that he was “someone” in society. He could be a beggar for all I care, and I would’ve still taken his hand. As afraid as I was of my father, I would’ve stripped my title and thrown away my luxurious life just for him.
Perhaps I resented Yang Zheyan for being the person who showed me what happiness is but also became the person who destroyed it all.
Xiong Jingfei touched his earlobes and traced his jawline. She sighed and carefully got off the bed without waking Yang Zheyan.
Grabbing her phone on the nightstand, she opened the door to his balcony and went out. Quietly shutting the doors behind her, she stepped out barefoot onto the wet cement.
“Hello…?”
Xiong Jingfei pressed her phone close to her ears to not miss a single conversation on the phone. “Yuan, how do I get Yang Zheyan to remember the past?”
