F-Class Destiny Hunter - Chapter 113:
Chapter 113
A tale of awakening Destinies. It was interesting, but the post itself wasn’t that shocking because ‘Destiny scams’ happened quite frequently.
This scam is about promising to awaken the Destiny of the victim then run away with the money. It was a common scam among religious groups and shamans.
[Try this amulet, and if you keep it and pray to it for 100 days, it will awaken your Destiny!]
[Get a ritual done. It’ll awaken your Destiny.]
[Your ancestors are angry so your Destiny isn’t awakening!]
Many desperately went to scammers hoping to grasp even a straw. Kim Je-neung had fallen for such petty scams a few times himself. So at first, he didn’t believe the Seong-eung Church’s post, thinking it must be yet another scam. But he would occasionally find testimonials of people who really did get their Destiny awakened at Seong-eung Church.
‘Maybe it’s true. They might really awaken me. And it didn’t seem dangerous…’
Looking into Seong-eung Church, it was a small, unknown religious group. Before the Day of Awakening, it focused on volunteer work and self-cultivation. Due to this, it seemed more like a place for meditation and ki training than a religious group.
“You really… awaken Destinies, right?”
Kim Je-neung asked again anxiously.
The others looked at him understandingly.
“That’s right. I was skeptical at first too, but quite a few Awakened here.”
“You too, sir?”
“Not yet, but I’m set to awaken my Destiny tomorrow!” The driver said excitedly.
Hearing that the man would become an awakened tomorrow, Kim Je-neung grew extremely envious.
Meanwhile, the passengers chattered lively. “What class do you think you’ll get? Insect-class?”
“Oh no, Insect-class? Don’t say that, it’s bad luck. Wish for a better one.”
“I’d be happy with even Human-class.”
Listening in, Kim Je-neung also felt strangely excited, thinking about his class.
‘Not Inscet-class. That’s for losers. At least Human-class, or Spirit-class…!’
– Thud!
Just as he was absorbed in happy thoughts, the van shook violently with a loud thud, and the passengers let out short shrieks as a result.
“Ah! What was that?”
“I think there’s something wrong with the wheels.”
Getting out to check, they discovered a wheel had gotten stuck in a pothole. They tried pushing the vehicle out together but couldn’t budge it.
The driver then made a call and said, “They’ll send help soon. It’ll come quickly if we wait.”
Hearing that, the passengers seemed relieved, thining it was fortunate the problem occurred near their destination.
The driver said in an annoyed tone, “But why is there a hole here? How strange…”
The hole was in a peculiar spot indeed, as if someone had dug it deliberately.
While people examined the hole, Kim Je-neung took a step back and said, “I’ll be right back after taking care of something.”
“Okay, don’t go too far.”
Kim Je-neung’s expression wasn’t good as he headed into the bushes.
‘I need to get into Seong-eung Church ASAP!’
His friends had already become hunters, clearing demon realms. They kept asking if he had awakened, what his class was. He was unable to reply, and his pride was hurt as he wanted to awaken quickly and join them.
‘No, don’t get impatient just because of an accident. It’s close.’
Once he entered Seong-eung Church, he could become a hunter too. He’d earn big money as a hunter, join a famous sect, and make a name for himself. Even get a patron god.
Thinking of such thoughts, the corners of his mouth unconsciously rose.
‘Just a little longer…’
– Thwack!
Then, someone covered Kim Je-neung’s mouth so suddenly he had no time to react at all. When Kim Je-neung struggled in shock, he was already pinned down facedown.
“Mmph!”
“Quiet. Don’t make noise.”
A cold voice came from behind. Seo Gangrim had Kim Je-neung restrained beneath him.
Looking him over, Seo Gangrim said, “A new recruit for Seong-eung Church? I haven’t seen you before.”
“Mmmph…”
“Trying to join that cult, huh. You must’ve been quite desperate.”
‘Cult?’
Hearing that word, Kim Je-neung jerked slightly. A part of him did wonder if it really was a cult but…
“You shouldn’t go in.”
Seo Gangrim subtly released the hand gagging him. He still had Kim Je-neung pinned with the other hand though.
Still facing the ground, Kim Je-neung asked, “Who… who’re you…?”
“That’s not important. I came to rescue someone trapped inside. So I need some help from you.”
“If it’s help you need…”
“Tell me your name, how you got here. Simple personal info.”
Kim Je-neung didn’t understand why he was asking that but honestly answered for now.
After listening silently, Seo Gangrim spoke.
“That’s good enough. Just one more favor.”
“What is…”
– Thwack!
Before Kim Je-neung could even finish speaking, Seo Gangrim struck the back of his head, and he lost consciousness without uttering a single scream.
Seo Gangrim looked at the man disinterestedly and said, “I’ll take some fingernails.”
***
“Je-neung-ssi. You took a while, did something happen?”
When he returned to the van, one of the religious members playfully spoke to him. Glancing around, Seo Gangrim saw that there were more people than before, probably those who came to get the van out.
“Oh my, wonder how this hole got here.”
“Well, atleast we got it now unstuck. Let’s get on quickly.”
They didn’t seem to notice Seo Gangrim was the one who dug the hole, or that Kim Je-neung was replaced. Though it’s no wonder they didn’t recognise Seo Gangrim, having eaten Kim Je-neung’s nails and transformed into him.
Seo Gangrim nodded casually and got back into the van.
“Alright, let’s go get our Destiny!”
The driver vigorously started the car.
The scenery was just forest paths until they finally arrived at thier destination. Getting off the van, Seo Gangirm looked at the Seong-eung Church building. It looked like an abandoned school. And that seemed to be exactly it. It was a rundown building remodeled for use, but the atmosphere didn’t look like a religious facility at all.
“Let’s go in, Je-neung-ssi.”
Someone pulled him inside. Once inside, Seo Gangrim saw that there were more people than he expected.
Seeing Seo Gangrim get dragged in, one of them greeted him cheerfully. “Oh, a new recruit?”
“Yes, I brought him.”
“Good job. Just a few more and you can get your Destiny, right?”
“Three more.”
Seong-eung Church promised to awaken Destinies but not everyone could receive that grace. Only those diligent in missionary work got priority for Destiny awakening. In other words, they had to recruit a number of followers, like a pyramid scheme.
Ignoring their chatter, Seo Gangirm looked around. It was his first time inside since in his past life, only Shin Sooah and the others had come here.
Around a year from now in Seo Gangrim’s past life, word of Seong-eung Church reached Flying Tiger sect.
Using Destiny awakening as bait, Seong-eung Church rapidly expanded. New religions popping up after the Day of Awakening wasn’t that strange. With various gods giving divine commands to people, religions mushroomed everywhere since it raised the gods’ fame.
Seong-eung Church, however, had many suspicious aspects. First, Seong-eung Church had no god. Religions without gods did exist, but they at least had god-like beings. Additionally, some who entered here disappeared without a trace. No matter how much their families tried contacting them, there was no news.
One such case involved a member of Flying Tiger sect, who informed Shin Sooah. Hearing this, Shin Sooah investigated Seong-eung Church, which led to Yu Harang’s rescue. Hence, Seo Gangrim would meet Yu Harang a year later from now. Right now, she was relatively safe perhaps. But the future was slowly changing, and considering Seong-eung Church’s nature…
Seo Gangrim couldn’t relax thinking he had a year until he meet her.
Just then, the Seong-eung Church follower said, “It’s almost time for the sermon, let’s head inside!”
Seo Gangrim wanted to investigate more but it was best to listen for now. So, he followed the cult member into the auditorium.
The auditorium was a massive hall, and many people had already gathered noisily inside. The attendees varied in age and gender.
Seo Gangrim looked around for Yu Harang until he heard the mic buzz.
“Thank you all for coming to Seong-eung Church, I’m very grateful.”
A man who looked around forty years old stood at the podium. He had a gentle appearance and smooth voice, and gave off the impression of a good person. His name was Yoo Sunmin.
“Today’s sermon is about…”
What followed was a calm, boring sermon. The gist was if one live virtuously, the person will be rewarded someday. But strange remarks were mixed in.
“The god of Seong-eung Church has not descended upon us yet. We don’t even know its name, but it will come for us soon.”
Hope filled Yu Sun-min’s eyes as he spoke. Stretching his arms wide, he said to the air, “There are many gods in this world, but they all seek powerful hunters. They don’t even glance at the weak like us.”
Hearing this, faint sighs sounded from the crowd. There were unawakened in Seong-eung Church, but also quite a few awakened but they had just no patron god. They were weak, overlooked by the gods.
As if consoling them, Yu Sun-min said, “But the nameless one who’ll soon descend will take our side, the weak. Our god will make all of us Manshins!”
It was a speech that would tempt the powerless and weak. Not only awakening Destinies but giving a god too. The crowd looked at Yu Sun-min longingly.
Amidst the atmosphere, Seo Gangirm lowered his head, hiding his eyes that must be blazing with anger and bloodlust. Knowing what the nameless god meant, Seo Gangrim couldn’t hold back his rage. He wanted to leap onto the podium this instant and cut Yu Sun-min’s throat.
As Seo Gangrim struggled to restrain my emotions, Yu Sun-min’s voice rang out again.
“Today, there is someone here who will receive new blessings.”
Suddenly, silence fell. Seo Gangrim raised his head wondering what happened to see Yu Sun-min looking his way.
Staring into Seo Gangrim’s eyes, he said, “You there, please come up to the podium.”
