Fenrir’s Journey: I Shall Devour The Heavens - Chapter 70
After testing her enhanced capabilities, Fenrir was impressed with the efficacy of cultivation as, even though it didn’t seem as versatile as Eva’s magic, it was much easier to use. Instead of having to form wards and create complex spell formulae, the only requirement was to have the right kind of energy and channel it in a specific way. Though there were ways in which the skills could be modified, it was mostly dependent on the experience and innovations of the user, not with how the techniques themselves were used. It was like the difference between firing a crossbow and having to design the crossbow from scratch in order to fire it. Though the latter gave you a lot of leeway in changing the final product, including modifications to strength and functionality, it was inarguably slower and less ‘efficient’ in the end.
Now, Fenrir had three different ways she could fight enemies, greatly enhancing her capabilities and means to deal with each unique situation. If time allowed, she could use large scale Magic that was inordinately more powerful than most cultivation techniques. In other situations, such as if she were fighting against a strong cultivator, she had the option of using her instant movement techniques, [Shundo] and [Koku Shundo], while her offense would revolve around the attack methods of her cultivation technique and pure elemental manipulation. For defense, she could absorb attacks with her devouring shroud and, if the situation was beyond her base capabilities to overcome, Fenrir would be able to use her devouring energy offensively to defeat her enemies.
The most important discovery Fenrir had made was that her Devouring Laws weren’t simply external, as their origin was from her body itself. She was able to internalize the energy and direct it in the same way as the attacks derived from her cultivation technique. This allowed her to still fly through the sky, avoiding the situation where she tripped by trying to step on a foothold that didn’t exist. Even now, with most of her emotions suppressed by her meditation and cultivation method, Fenrir could still feel her face get a little hot when she thought about Geng Chao laughing at her…
Satisfied with her growth, Fenrir made a thin shroud of Devouring energy that clung to her skin like an extra layer, hidden beneath her clothing. Even when she wore her shroud around her entire body, Fenrir’s clothing wasn’t devouring, allowing her to quickly learn that her intent had some influence over the Devouring Laws. This knowledge gave her the confidence to ‘conceal’ the energy beneath her clothing, allowing her to use it more sneakily to deal with foes. Though Eva had taught her that it was important to display your strength, she also emphasized that you shouldn’t constantly show people your limits. Keeping the full extent of your capabilities a secret would give you an edge against opponents you otherwise wouldn’t have been able to defeat.
Once she was satisfied with her appearance, Fenrir decided to check on Wen Xiulan and the Heavenly Moon Sect, completely unaware that it was now the Devouring Moon Sect. Though she noticed the banners that were on display had changed to display a wolf’s head, Fenrir didn’t think about it much as she flew towards the large palatial temple at the heart of the Sect.
There were significantly fewer people moving about the premises and, after seeing Fenrir, they quickly bowed low, clearly afraid of offending her. This made Fenrir feel a little annoyed but she ignored them and continued toward where Wen Xiulan was located. Because they used the same cultivation method, Fenrir was able to sense her much easier than others, even if Wen Xiulan wanted to try and conceal her strength. Currently, Fenrir’s perception of Yin, Ice, and Water Elemental energy had developed to the point that she could isolate the energies from the other ambient elemental energy in the environment. It was this reason that, instead of spending more than a year building her foundation, Fenrir had been able to achieve basic mastery of the first stage of the Sacred Heart of the Ice Phoenix in only two months, a monstrous achievement for someone cultivating for the first time…
