When Lambert ran around, hunting down the 『Enhanced Demonic Insects』, a thunderous sound resounded from afar.

He stopped in the midst of killing another demon, looking up as he glared toward the direction of the thunderous sound.

The building collapsed, and a vortex of sand and dust appeared from underground.

A while later, a giant bug—longer than 10 meters—appeared from inside the vortex.

The outer skin of the bug was light brown. It had countless wart-like protrusions on its entire body.

It also had a lot of feelers on its body. On the tips of those feelers were the skewered bodies of sorcerers from the inquisition squad.

Lambert unsheathed his greatsword, running in the direction where the spirits of the insect realm appeared.

By the time he arrived, the place had already become a mass graveyard for the 『Enhanced Demonic Insects』.

Lambert focused his attention to the direction of the voice.

There was a woman collapsed beneath the corpses of 『Enhanced Demonic Insects』.

Where her eyes should have been, there were just bloody holes—perhaps eaten by the 『Enhanced Demonic Insects』.

Maybe, the『Enhanced Demonic Insects』 had already left their eggs inside the woman’s body. Most likely, her body had already been turned into a nest of their larvae.

…Not to mention that her wound was quite deep too. She wouldn’t survive for too long.

「Sorry, but I have no leeway to save you. But I’ll at least end your misery.」

「My daughter… My daughter… She should be nearby. Pl-please save her.」

The woman’s face changed.

「As expected, so it’s you, huh, 『Gu』.」

「As expected? You just hate to admit that you’re a sore loser. If you understand that, you wouldn’t hesitate to cut down this body of mine. And if you did that, you’d aim for another part of my body, right?」

The woman, or rather, 『Gu』, spoke at Lambert as she grabbed her gouged arm, tore it off, and threw it on the ground with smile.

「I won’t do something like abandon the citizens for no good reason.」

「Hah, compared to the other people who lived through that era, you’re too naive. And you only caused worse damage by failing to kill me.」

「That might be the case, but you’re going to die for sure.」

Lambert pointed his greatsword at 『Gu』.

Maybe because of Lambert’s words or his presence, the smile on 『Gu』’s face vanished.

「Acknowledging the weakness of the people who must be protected—the Four Demon Generals are the embodiment of that ideal. I have no intention to compare principles with you people.」

『Gu』’s opened her mouth after a brief silence.

「You’re the best, O Great Demon General. You have something that I lack.」

『Gu』’s mouth formed a self-deprecating smile. It was different from the mocking smile that she showed until now.

The man who stood before her was unwavering with his principles to the point that not even death could shake him. He was someone whom she aspired to become—yet failed.

「But the way you dealt with me is a bit too naive. Although I’m really ashamed to rely on the 『Knight of Blood Mist』 buying time to save my life… I won’t underestimate you again. I don’t know if you’ve already noticed or not, but the reason why I summoned the spirit that killed the members of the inquisition squad a while ago was precisely to invite you here.」

The throbbing blood vessel on 『Gu』’s face made her expression far more terrifying than before.

「I’ve prepared mountains of 『Enhanced Demonic Insect』 corpses just to kill you. In this way, I can summon as many high-ranking spirits as I want. Not only that, I still have an ace in the hole. Now behold, the essence of the curse of the Hudo tribe.」
