God Made Incompatibility - Chapter 59
The day after Sheng Jinshu asked for leave, Meng Chuyang called Meng Wanji and asked her if she had time to go shopping together on weekends and go home for dinner.
She complained to her: “Dad seems to miss us a lot recently, especially you, and he has become more frequent with me. I was a little flattered at first, but later I found out that he didn’t mean to drink at all.”
“I always ask you about things around the corner, and I blame me for not being home all day long. I’m so wronged.”
“Sister, he clearly blames me for not going home with you. You don’t come home often. What’s wrong with him? What’s the matter with you?”
Meng Wanji was amused and a little sad. After the Spring Festival and Meng Shipei came out of the closet, their father and daughter didn’t communicate much less often. In the occasional telephone greeting, the communication was more restrained than before, and each time it stopped on the surface and couldn’t say a few words. She thought that her father was disappointed in her and didn’t want to talk to her, and she felt depressed for a long time after each phone call.
Isn’t that so?
She habitually covered up: “It’s okay, maybe I’ve been too busy recently, which made him worry.”
Meng Chuyang didn’t quite believe it, but Meng Wanji refused to speak, and she couldn’t pry her mouth open.
“Then are you coming back this weekend?” she coquettishly. She has been working hard recently, and she hasn’t seen her sister for more than half a month.
Meng Wanji agreed: “Sunday?”
“Okay, I’ll pick you up.” Meng Chuyang was happy.
Meng Wanji was infected with a little smile, hung up the phone, and habitually went to the balcony to see the kitten, and then realized something. She stopped and looked at the reflection of the cold white light under her feet and the empty kitten’s nest on the balcony, her smile dissipated a little bit.
This place she used to be infinitely attached to, without Sheng Jinshu, there is still the atmosphere of Sheng Jinshu everywhere. From the day they broke up, it seems to have made her suffer more than the Meng family.
After watching a movie with Meng Chuyang on Sunday, having lunch, and shopping, I returned to Meng’s house. The Meng family was quiet, and Li Yuanshu accompanied Chi Ye to a flower arrangement class.
Meng Chuyang showed Meng Wanji the location of the study upstairs, indicating that Meng Shipei should be at home.
Meng Wanji pressed down her impolite fingers and smiled lightly: “Then I’ll go and say hello to Dad first.”
“Yeah.” Meng Chuyang was paralyzed on the sofa playing with his phone.
Meng Wanji went upstairs.
The door of the study was open, and Meng Shipei was sitting at the desk busy with official business when he heard footsteps and turned his head.
Meng Wanji raised her hand to knock on the door and paused, her long eyelashes trembled slightly, and raised her lips to greet, “Dad, I’m back.”
Meng Shipei stared at her for two seconds, his slightly serious expression dissipated when he was not smiling, revealing some kindness that Meng Wanji was familiar with. “Come in and sit.”
He took off his glasses, got up and went to the sofa beside the coffee table.
Meng Wanji stepped in as she said and sat beside him.
Everything seems to be the same as before she came out. He cares about her recent work and life, she cares about his and Li Yuanshu’s recent health, and the topic spreads. Meng Shipei said that Chi Ye had recently made a boyfriend, and it was Li Yuanshu’s friend who connected it. Look It’s okay to get up.
Meng Wanji couldn’t help but pay more attention.
Meng Shipei brought her a cup of tea, and after changing the conversation, he suddenly asked, “How about you? How are you doing recently?”
Meng Wanji was caught off guard by the question, and was stunned before answering, “It’s okay.”
She didn’t know what Meng Shipei’s attitude meant? Is it… acquiesced? She couldn’t tell if she still felt unreasonable reluctance, or she didn’t want to make Meng Shipei feel that such a relationship was just as indeterminate as Guo Jiajia. She lied.
Meng Shipei didn’t look suspicious, just asked: “Is she recovering well? Why do you have time to come back today?”
Meng Wanji hesitated: “Huh?”
Meng Shipei made it clear what he didn’t mention last time: “I watched the surveillance on New Year’s Eve, and I couldn’t worry, so I found someone to confirm her identity. A few days ago, the school sent me her information, and I saw her entry medical report reminding me. There’s something wrong with her lungs. She’s also on sick leave this week, isn’t she going to have an operation?”
As if struck by lightning, Meng Wanji was stunned, her head was blank for several seconds, and she couldn’t understand the meaning of Meng Shipei’s words.
But her body’s response was far more timely than her thinking. Her heartbeat was already chaotic. In the middle of early summer, she seemed to be wrapped in winter.
“Ah, yes, but it’s not scheduled yet.” She tried to squeeze a voice out of her throat.
Meng Shipei felt that her expression was not right, and worried: “Is the preoperative examination bad?”
“No.” Meng Wanji lied hard.
Meng Shipei said: “If you really need to call me, some people in the hospital will sell me face.” In fact, he still doesn’t agree with this kind of love. But he knows how firm and solemn his daughter is. Since she can do this for the other party, he can imagine how important the other party is to her. Then if something happened to her, the saddest thing would be his daughter.
He can’t see it.
“Okay, thank you dad.” Meng Wanji was absent-minded.
As if nothing had happened, she chatted with Meng Shipei in the study for a while, but she finally found an excuse to go back to the room.
She leaned on the back of the chair with her hands and feet limp and sat down. The more she thought about Meng Shipei’s words, the more she thought about the look on Sheng Jinshu’s face when she left the night before, the more panicked she looked. The whole portrait was weightless, and she felt dizzy for a while. Thought, can’t worry about anything else at all.
She took out her mobile phone and sent a text message to Sheng Jinshu for the first time after breaking up: “Cleaning up the dormitory, I found an opened bag of cat food, do you want to send it to Sister Tinghua?”
She probes.
Sheng Jinshu did not return to her for a long time.
This has never happened before. She almost always responds to her text messages in seconds. Even if there is something at hand, she will call her back to tell her something, and come back later.
She called Sheng Jinshu directly.
The phone rang in a mechanical female voice: “Hello, the number you dialed has been turned off.”
Meng Wanji’s uneasy mood reached its peak.
She flipped through the address book to call Shen Tinghua, and her fingers were slipping in panic.
After the long wait for the tone, just when Meng Wanji thought that Shen Tinghua would not answer the phone, Shen Tinghua finally answered the phone.
“Xiao Meng?” came her warm and calm voice.
Meng Wanji’s heart fell a little, then hung high again.
“Sister Tinghua, where is Jinshu?” She said straight to the point.
Shen Tinghua pretended to be puzzled: “Huh?” The tone was unnatural.
Meng Wanji’s temples throbbed, and she asked her: “Is she recovering well?”
Shen Tinghua was caught off guard, and he didn’t know what to do or not to confess.
Meng Wanji instantly got the answer in her silence, like falling into an ice cave: “Sister Tinghua, I know it all!”
She pretended to ask, “How is she now?” Her throat was so dry that it hurt.
Shen Tinghua thought she really knew, so she had to confess: “She’s all right, the pathology during the operation said it was carcinoma in situ, and it’s fine if it is removed.”
When Meng Wanji heard the word “cancer”, she felt that all the blood rushed to her head, her eyes darkened, and her throat could not make a sound.
Afraid of her worry, Shen Tinghua emphasized: “It’s really fine, you don’t even need to do chemotherapy, you’ll be fine after being discharged from the hospital.” She explained to Sheng Jinshu, trying to save her a little: “She didn’t tell you because she was afraid you were worried.”
Meng Wanji blinked, tears wetting her eyelashes. “I’m just as worried right now,” she said.
She has been her lover for so long, she has so many opportunities to tell her, what is there not to tell her? Is it unnecessary, or don’t believe she can take it together?
What did she take her for?
Shen Tinghua didn’t know how to comfort her. If you want to explain or ask for forgiveness, Sheng Jinshu should speak for herself. She is not qualified and neither should I. She asked tentatively, “Xiaojin came down from the intensive care unit in a while. We are in 403, Building 5, Inpatient Department of the First City Hospital. Do you want to come and see her?”
Meng Wanji raised her head, wiped away her tears, and replied, “No.”
“Please, Sister Tinghua, how much trouble you have to worry about.”
She hung up the phone indifferently.
Meng Chuyang was knocking on the door, “Sister, can I come in?”
Meng Wanji sat at the table and replied in a hoarse voice: “Chuyang, I have something to do, can you come back later?”
Meng Chuyang didn’t know why, but he responded obediently and didn’t bother anymore.
Meng Wanji couldn’t stop her tears, and she couldn’t calm down at all. She tried to convince herself that Shen Tinghua was fine, she was a doctor, and if she said she was fine, she must be fine; she and Sheng Jinshu had broken up, and it was none of her business.
But it can’t be done.
She simply can’t do it.
She turned on the search engine to search for information about lung cancer in situ, and the more she searched, the more anxious she became. Even if all the data showed that it had little effect, she still couldn’t feel at ease.
How is the wound? Is she really okay? She’s such a squeamish person.
Her fists clenched and loosened, she grabbed her phone, and finally got up suddenly, opened the door and borrowed Meng Chuyang’s car, refused her companion, and drove to the city’s first hospital by herself.
I never felt that the smell of disinfectant in the hospital was so pungent, and I never felt that the whereabouts of the elevator was so slow. It took more than ten seconds for the car to go from the eighth floor to the sixth floor. I didn’t know how long it would take to go down to the first floor. Meng Wanji couldn’t wait. She looked at the entrance of the stairs, and quickly ran up the stairs on the side.
Panting, she stepped out of the stair door on the fourth floor, and at a glance, she saw Sheng Jinshu, who had just been pushed out of the elevator in the opposite aisle, wearing a hospital gown, holding an oxygen bag, and sitting in a wheelchair.
She saw her a second later than her, her smiling expression suddenly froze, her face pale.
Meng Wanji’s vision blurred for a moment, and her chest sank as if she couldn’t breathe. She paused for two seconds, then turned and left.
“Xiao Ji…” Sheng Jinshu was about to stand up in a wheelchair and chase after him.
Shen Tinghua was shocked: “What are you doing! Don’t move!”
Meng Wanji suddenly panicked, stopped, and shouted half-sideways, “Don’t move!”
The voice was hoarse and calm.
In the glass reflection on the corridor door, crystal water marks rustled down Meng Wanji’s cheeks.
Sheng Jinshu listened to her words and did not dare to move.
Her heart was twisted like a knife, and she no longer had the calmness and unscrupulousness of the initial confrontation.
Meng Wanji asked her from a distance, “Are you okay?”
Sheng Jinshu replied in a harsh voice: “It’s okay.”
“When will the major disease come out?”
“A week later.”
“Then you have a good rest.” Without any more words, she lifted her foot to leave and disappeared into the stair door.
Sheng Jinshu stared at her disappearing back for a long time, gritted his teeth and lowered his head.
Shen Tinghua pushes the wheelchair, but she has a lot of heart and can’t help her, so she comforts her: “Recover well first, and then explain it after you are discharged from the hospital.”
Sheng Jinshu gave a low “um” and asked, “How did she know?”
Shen Tinghua told Meng Wanji’s sudden call.
Sheng Jinshu’s eyes were red, but he didn’t say anything.
After returning to the ward to settle down, staring at the time, it was probably time to drive to the Ningwai dormitory. Sheng Jinshu turned on his mobile phone and sent a text message to Meng Wanji: “Have you arrived at the dormitory?”
Meng Wanji did not return to her.
She was still sitting in the parking lot of the hospital, with tears all over her face, like a fool and a lunatic.
Sheng Jinshu posted two more.
“Sorry for not telling you at the very beginning.”
“I’m sorry, I didn’t dare to keep you when the situation was unclear.”
Meng Wanji clutched her phone, but she couldn’t wipe away the tears on her face.
She buried her face on the steering wheel and bit her lip without crying. It was like she had finally returned to summer from winter, but the sunlight through the glass windows in summer still couldn’t completely warm the chill on her body.
There are countless thoughts in her heart, grievance, anger, disappointment… mixed together, struggling and tearing, but how can it be no match for that feeling of fear, happiness, and the rest of her life.
Compared with life and death, everything else seems to have become insignificant.
She was still afraid, still happy.
She’s fine, that’s fine.
Afraid that Secretary Sheng Jin would hang up and not rest well, after a long time, she wiped away her tears and returned to her.
“Here, you have a good rest.”
