- Chapter 136 Sacrifice One For The Good of The Many
Chen Wei sighed and looked disappointed: “If only you could have used that intelligence to avoid getting caught in the first place. I forgot to add earlier that I have evidence that you have received bribes into your offshore accounts. Oh and that you have offshore accounts.”
Chen Wei had an evil glint in his eye: “Let’s say your little delusion of Emerald hospital being affected by this situation happened. Emerald hospital will never go down. We will simply make someone irrelevant and distantly connected to another hospital take the fall and conveniently place evidence for the investigators to find. When he or she goes down we’ll just plead ignorance. We will then demonstrate our willingness to help with the investigation in any way shape or form. That way we can frame our competitors, get rid of you and improve our wonderful reputation. Sacrifice one for the good of the many. We always have some’one’ who can be sacrificed.”
Yang Zian felt defeated: “Tell me what needs to be done.”
Chen Wei smiled with malice: “I’ll tell you this Dr Yang Zian, the only reason why we’re keeping a liability such as yourself is because we have put effort into cultivating you and haven’t recieved enough in return for those efforts. And in case you get any ideas in the future when you regain your good reputation and status, be warned that I have many more ways to destroy you. I’ve just mentioned the obvious things today.” He always kept his cards close to his chest.
Yang Zian nodded. In all the time he had worked in Emerald hospital, he had only seen the calm, amicable and approachable Chen Wei. This was the first time he had seen the true face of Chen Wei and it sent shivers down his spine.
Chen Wei: “Since you amused me with your misplaced bravery today, you’ll only receive a 10% pay cut. I will help you to prosper as long as you follow the path I have set you.”
Chen Wei saw that Yang Zian’s expression had eased slightly. He knew that it was equally important to use the stick and give the carrot.Chen Wei had to loosen the leash enough that Yang Zian believed he had autonomy.
Chen Wei: “Are you ready to comply?”
….
Shen Qui’s car
He Minzhe: “I’ve called my chauffeur to come and pick us up at yours.” He had been drinking earlier and left his car at the Shen residence when he got the call. He was too tired to drive it now and ordered someone to pick it up.
Shen Qui continued looking at the road ahead: “Cool.”
Qin Song: “Someone will be delivering the documents I spoke to you about earlier. Is your uncle on standby?”
Shen Qui’s uncle was currently one of 3 candidates being considered for the future head of the Ministry of Public Security. Qin Song thought he would aid Shen Mengyao by helping him unearth a shocking scandal. A tale of bribing medical council members, a doctor harming patients and colleagues to progress in their career and a systematic cover-up of it all. There were also some small details about offshore accounts, tax evasion, and many other interesting events.
Qin Song smirked a little as he imagined Chen Wei’s current state and felt elated. He was going to get rid of Yang Zian once and for all, for the good of Unity hospital. It just so happened that Li Xiuying would also benefit from his actions.
He knew that she didn’t want him to meddle, so he figured as long as he didn’t reveal himself and made the situation seem like it was karma in action it was fine. Additionally, if she did find out then she couldn’t chastise him for meddling because this was the situation he meddled in previous to her warning. So technically it was counted as meddling once. Well, that’s how he justified it in his mind.
Shen Qiu: “Yep. Contacted him already. He’s making his way to the house as we speak.”
Qin Song looked out the window and couldn’t wait for tomorrow to come.
He Meiying pretended to be looking at something on her phone. She peeked at Qin Song from time to time.
He Meiying tentatively asked: “Does father know?”
He Minzhe: “What do you think? Someone from the restaurant called dad to report your behavior. He’s the one that called me to bring you home. We heard a group of you went to confront another guest. Can you imagine how dad felt being told his 25-year-old medic daughter was acting like a clown in public?”
He Meiying said defensively: “I didn’t make a scene. I was just talking to Li Xiuying, doctor to doctor about a previous medical situation that we were both a part of. When we had finished taking I simply walked away and sat down.”
He Minzhe: “Right. Even if you had a problem with her why couldn’t you talk to her in private? Why did you have to make a scene in public? You know what, forget it. There’s no point you trying to talk around it now. You should think of a way to explain everything to mum and dad instead.”
He Meiying was quiet for a moment before she gathered her courage and spoke again: “Brother Song, does Li Xiuying really work at unity hospital?”
Qin Song indifferently replied: “Yes.”
He Meiying blurted out: “Is Zhou FengMian aware of your meeting?” Qin Song had clearly mentioned that he was meeting Li Xiuying tomorrow. She mostly believed the meeting was to discuss business however, the small jealous, neurotic part of her believed there could be something going on. She could only just about tolerate the idea of Zhou Fengmian because they were childhood sweethearts and were engaged. Li Xiuying would be a different story.
Qin Song coldly turned to look at He Minzhe, nothing more needed to be said.
He Minzhe sternly said: “He Meiying. If I were you I would be thinking of ways to appease dad instead.”
Silence descended in the car.
He Meiying knew she had overstepped, she looked down at her phone and remained silent. She became immersed in her thoughts.
She had liked Qin Song for a few years. It had started off as a simple crush and developed into something more. She had been fantasizing about the day he would come to his senses and notice her and leave his fiance. Emerald is one of the top hospitals in the country and it has a widely acclaimed residency program. Additionally, one of the many other reasons she had chosen to work at Emerald hospital was because of the future. If she and Qin Song did get together then there wouldn’t be a conflict of interest and her personal life would stay private. Furthermore, she didn’t want Qin Song to see her as a clingy love-struck puppy with nothing better to do than chase him around.
She wanted to build a strong reputation as an excellent doctor. She wanted to prove her worth, not just to Qin Song and her family but to high society as well. She didn’t want the fact that she was the illegitimate daughter of the powerful He family to define her. She had escaped abroad exactly because she wanted to get away from the gossip and shark-infested waters of the upper circle.
He Meiying felt an uncomfortable feeling in her chest as she thought that her decision to go abroad and to train at Emerald hospital may have been wrong. She recalled how Qin Song had paused for a few moments and how his gaze softened when he looked at Li Xiuying. She subconsciously clenched her teeth and tightened her grip around her phone.
He Minzhe’s phone started ringing. He Minzhe looked at the screen before answering: “Hello Dad.”
He Meiying turned to look at her brother.
He Jinhai: “Did you collect your sister?”
He Minzhe: “Yes dad. We’ll be home soon. The chauffeur is picking us up at Qiu’s.”
He Jinhai: “I’ll be waiting in the study for her.”
He Minzhe put the phone in his pocket. He looked at his half-sister with pity in his eyes. He knew that his sister had a tough night ahead of her. Their father had always been extra strict and harsh with her and his mother was lukewarm towards her.
He Meiying was the result of a one night stand his father had, had. A maid had taken advantage of his father’s drunken state then disappeared, only to return 2 years later with a toddler. He Meiying’s mother was all too happy to sign over her parental rights to the He family for a large sum of money. His mother did not really react, even till this day she fulfilled her role of step-mother but anyone could see she had no feelings for He Meiying.
He Minzhe sighed.
