- Chapter 155 Medical Student Extraordinaire
Li Xiuying called Yao Changying: “Changying, don’t pretend you’ve forgotten our meeting. My office, 15 minutes.” She then hung up not leaving any time for Yao Changying to object.
She went and got changed. Li Xiuying then very slowly meandered to her office as if she was taking a leisurely stroll down a country line; taking in all the sights such as the large windows and the normal-sized hallways.
Li Xiuying eventually made it to her office and found a scornful Yao Changying waiting outside with her arms crossed.
Yao Changying: “I can’t stay long, I’ve left the trainee watching over the patient.”
Li Xiuying: “You usually just sit around scrolling through online articles and drinking tea.”
Yao Changying cleared her throat: “My presence makes him feel at ease. ”
Li Xiuying turned the doorknob and entered. She found Shen Xiaosi typing away at his computer with his rigid back facing Tu Nianzu.
Tu Nianzu stood from his seat and buttoned his blazer button. He wore a cordial smile on his voice but his words carried ridicule: “It’s nice that you could find time to meet me even with your busy schedule.”
Li Xiuying: “Mmm.”
Tu Nianzu: “I’ve come here to continue the discussion we had yesterday. The private and confidential case we spoke of. I think we can both agree that it would be more appropriate if irrelevant parties left the room while we talk.”
Yao Changying opened the door fully and looked at the hanging name plaque that read ‘Dr Li Xiuying’. She then tapped the sign: “YingYing I don’t think this is your office. or I’ve lost the ability to read. OMG, I’m blind!
Li Xiuying smiled at Yao Changying’s antics.
Tu Nianzu looked at Yao Changying with annoyance.
Shen Xiaosi was filled with glee when he saw Tu Nianzu’s sour expression. He had been listening to Tu Nianzu’s self-important, self-righteous, selfish complaints and criticisms for the past 1 hour 17 minutes and 32 seconds, not that he was counting.
Tu Nianzu looked at Li Xiuying expectantly.
The room fell into an awkward silence.
Yao Changying looked at her nails and thought about buying another blanket made of alpaca wool. ‘Should I get the purple one or the blue-purplish one?’
Li Xiuying stared at Tu Nianzu expressionlessly as she thought ‘You want to play the silence game? I will crush you with the pressure of silence.’
Tu Nianzu gazed into Li Xiuying eyes and in them, he found the lifelessness that his grandfather had spoken about. There was something eery about having the full weight of Li Xiuying’s gaze on him.
Tu Nianzu conceded: “Dr Li, may I please have a moment of your time to discuss some private matters.”
Li Xiuying: “Mmm”
Shen Xiaosi could see that Li Xiuying has accepted Tu Nianzu’s request. He excused himself: “I’ll take my break now.” He left and closed the door behind him.
Li Xiuying went and sat at her desk, Yao Changying rolled Shen Xiaosi’s chair next to Li Xiuying and sat down.
Tu Nianzu: “Perhaps we should be completely alone?”
Li Xiuying: “It is a skill to know what to say according to the situation at hand.” Meaning whatever he doesn’t want a third party to know, shouldn’t be said. He couldn’t boast about his powerful family or threaten her about what could potentially happen if she were to cross them.
Tu Nianzu pulled his collar a little ‘Well played. Now I won’t be able to say anything to explicit.’ He undid his blazer button as he sat down.
Li Xiuying looked at her watch.
Tu Nianzu: “Dr Li I think that we may have had some sort of misunderstanding yesterday regarding my grandfather’s operation. My grandfather would like to have the procedure this weekend. My uncle will forward the amount required into our account.”
Li Xiuying frowned ‘How was it a misunderstanding? I didn’t misunderstand anything. Everyone communicated their thoughts clearly. He reminds me a little of Qin Song, always saying everything is a misunderstanding.”
Li Xiuying’s frown deepened ‘Why did he come to mind?’
Tu Nianzu: “Dr Li are you not happy with the arrangement?”
Tu Nianzu complained internally: ‘What more does this woman want? She is being given an opportunity most people would be begging for and now she’s getting paid an extortionate amount as well. I knew she was cheap and tactless.’
Li Xiuying: “I’m busy.”
Tu Nianzu’s voice hardened: “Dr Li I don’t think you understood what I just said. My grandfather and my uncle have accepted your offer. My FAMILY is happy for you to operate.” He put particular emphasis on family.
Yao Changying turned herself and faced Li Xiuying disregarding Tu Nianzu: “YingYing who is this?”
Tu Nianzu was about to respond when Li Xiuiyng cut in: “He’s a final year medical student. His uncle recruited me to operate on his grandfather. Unfortunately, Mr Tu Nianzu found my intentions, skills and credentials lacking.”
Yao Changying had an evil glint in her eyes: “Tu Nianzu? Is that Elder Tu, the grandfather?”
Li Xiuiyng: “No.”
Yao Changying: “Oh then our junior’s uncle?”
Tu Nianzu’s eye twitched when he was referred to as a junior.
Li Xiuying: “No.”
Yao Changying: “Then who is Tu Nianzu? Is he a vascular surgeon? Or a general surgeon? The family’s private physician?”
Li Xiuying: “No.”
Yao Changying: “Who is he then?”Find authorized novels in Webnovel, faster updates, better experience,Please click www.novelhall.com for visiting.
Li Xiuying: “Him.”
Yao Changying spun her chair to face Tu Nianzu: “The medical student?”
Tu Nianzu gripped the arms of the chair in frustration. “I did some reading about the condition and the procedure. I had also spoken to a few surgeons about the procedure so I just asked a few questions based on my research. It was to ensure my grandfather made an informed choice.”
Yao Changying: “Interesting first time I’ve seen a future doctor also consult Dr. search engine.”
Tu Nianzu was about to argue back, he hadn’t just simply used a search engine. He knew that this woman was being deliberately antagonistic and she was damn well good at it.
Li Xiuying: ” Mr Tu, let me make myself clear. I am busy this weekend, I have made arrangements which are important and which I will not rearrange. My services were sought out. I have the choice to accept or decline. No one will dictate my actions. Since you have stepped into my office, all you’ve done is highlighted your family’s opinion. Do you think I will make myself available on your whim?”
Tu Nianzu knew that he couldn’t simply talk his way out of this situation. If he didn’t resolve this situation with Li Xiuying and something happened to his grandfather, he was scared to even think about it.
Tu Nianzu would apologize if he had to but it would be difficult to sound sincere: “What will it take for you to perform the surgery?”
Li Xiuying smirked: “Simple words.”
Tu Nianzu: “What? Words?”
Li Xiuying: “10,000 words.”
Tu Nianzu huffed a laugh: “You want me to write an assignment?”
Li Xiuying: “Detailing the consultation that took place yesterday evening providing your analysis on what was said and the possible reasons why. Then write about carotid artery stenosis, physiology, pathology, sequelae/complications, genetics, biochemistry, anatomy, epidemiology, risk factors, investigations and interpreting results, medical and surgical management, complications of the surgery etc.”
Tu Nianzu: “Dr Li you can not be serious?”
Li Xiuying: “5% for references, 25% for structure and syntax, 70% for content. Due date Sunday at 2:30 pm. Late submissions will be penalized by 10%. Over or under-length by 5% will be penalized by 10%.” This guy was constantly assessing others, let’s see how he likes it.
Tu Nianzu: “This is simply unreasonable. 10,000 words in basically one and a half days? Didn’t you say that you were busy this weekend, why does it need to be in on Sunday?”
Li Xiuying: “Only if the candidate scores 70% or above will I consider doing the surgery. In the world of medicine, there are no guarantees. The door is behind you.”
Tu Nianzu gave Li Xiuying one last look before standing up and heading out.
Yao Changying: “Oh Mr. Tu Nianzu medical student extraordinaire, I’ll be the second external marker to ensure your marks are fair and reasonable. Just a small piece of advice, it would be wise to use journals for reference not random ramblings of people online. Also, the opinions of work colleagues are not regarded as strong evidence. It’s always polite to close the door on the way out.”
Yao Changying burst into laughter as soon as Tu Nianzu left: “I guess someone won’t be sleeping this weekend.”
Li Xiuying smiled. She felt her phone vibrate in her pocket, it was little 4th calling: “One-moment Changying.”
