Guns And Fantasy - Chapter 10 Magic Assassin
The kids from the camp made ten lines with eight kids in each and talked with each other while occasionally moving their head left and right. Nate was one of those who stood at the last because of his height. Olly stood next to him in another line and they chatted with each other as well while throwing a few jokes here and there.
“Kids, okay quite down and listen.”Baldy came to the front and ordered everyone to quiet down. Among the 130 or so kids only 80 remained and other failed to keep up and were removed from the camp.
“There are 80 of you who have passed but the real training has yet to start. As I have said in the past, the three-month drill was only to get you into shape and also to sort out those with a weak will. We’ll now separate you in different classes according to your abilities as well as preference.
Assassin, Warrior, Archer, Spy, and Swordsman are the classes available for choosing. Once you choose one of these class we’ll train you for a week. If you’re not compatible with the class of your preference then we’ll select the class for you.” Baldy said as he looked at the kids who once again started to chatter around talking about the classes.
“Other than that, I’ll call out some names. We have a special class for you.” Baldy said and took out a piece of paper from the pocket and looked at the names written there.
“Olly Rothschild”
“Nate Hunter”
“Annie Lane”
“Nadia Miller”
“And John Rogers, you guys follow me and as for the rest make a different line based on the class you choose and wait here. You’ll have a new instructor according to your class.” Baldy said and he also moved with five kids he called out leaving others to decide what classes they wanted to join.
Baldy led five kids toward his office and sat down while telling them to find a sit as well. The kids found a chair each and sat down waiting for Baldy to speak.
“Since I said special class, then you must have already guessed what I’m talking about. I’ll get to the point. All of you have already awakened your magic, while you’ve awakened them later than most people you are none the less a mage with magic in your body.” Baldy said while resting his back in the chair.
Nate looked at other kid beside him. He already knew Olly was a mage since he was his friend and he didn’t know much out the other three since he didn’t socialize much and they were not allowed to use their magic during their training.
Nate was warned the day after he joined while the rest were warned at the start of the camp so, besides Olly, Nate didn’t know how many others were mages.
“Olly Rothschild earth attribute; internal caster, Annie Lane Fire attribute; external caster, Nadia Miller water attribute; external caster, John Rogers air attribute; internal caster and finally Nate hunter attribute summoning; external caster” Baldy explained their magic attribute as well as casting type.
With their magic attribute, it was easier for them to pick a class according to their abilities. “Although all of you’ve awakened late and have a lesser chance to reacher higher realms in magic, it won’t stop us from making you a powerhouse capable to striking fear to the enemy with just your name. Of course, that will happen only if you worked hard for it.” Baldy said as he stood up
“You’ve joined a mercenary group and it was your decision to join and we didn’t drag you in here. While we have a wide range of influence in the kingdom, it won’t change the fact that we are nothing but a hired thugs to act on the words of the client. Besides the army of the kingdom, our guild has the highest mortality rate during the job.
And since you are mages the jobs you’ll undertake will naturally be of higher difficulty, which means a higher death rate. I wanted to let you guys know about the world you are going to enter. Now its the last chance to back out into your ordinary lives. Choose wisely.” Baldy said
“The five kids started to second guess their thoughts but none of them backed out. The grand kingdom from the era of Archmage Lydia was long gone and was now a hollow country filled with corrupt officials. They wouldn’t be going to their normal life even if they backed out as their life had already been ruined.
While it was easy for the four kids to accept the consequences, it wasn’t the same for Nate. Although his previous life was a struggle it wasn’t a life or death struggle. He had food, shelter and few means of entertainment. It wasn’t a true struggle, it was just that he was envious of rich lifestyle others enjoyed which he couldn’t.
Nate asked Edwin to take him because he had nowhere to go and had no idea where to start. There was also that ambush thing where he killed a person. He acted normal but that didn’t mean the incident didn’t hunt him in his dreams.
If not for the magic to enhance his body, there would definitely be huge dark circles under his eyes due to insufficient sleep and maybe even few health complications as a normal body wouldn’t be able to handle both physical and mental stress he was going through.
Nate kept seeing blood when he tried to sleep and the man he killed but he had no one to share it with. He had yet to tell it to Olly, similarly, Olly had his own secret as well. They were friends but not close enough for secrets yet.
After thinking about his choices he decided to stick with the mercenary guild. He already had blood in his hand and the only way to get over his nightmare was to accept it.
“I’m glad you guys choose to stay. Now about the classes it easy to choose since you have awakened the magic and your class must go with your attributes. Olly will train in terms of strength and vitality, John and Nadia in terms of agility and strength, Annie in spell casting and finally Nate your ability is versatile as you can summon various weapon so you train in agility, strength, and assassination.”
Baldy said as he looked at each of them and finally rested his eye on Nate.
Nate was surprised by the suggestion of Baldy as assassination was one of the taboos in the kingdom. “Why are you surprised? I just said we are nothing more than a hired thugs. People pay us for services and it will naturally include ending someone’s life. All of you can choose to be an assassin but knowing your background I highly doubt you will choose to be an assassin.” Baldy said as he saw the questioning look of other kids beside Nate.
“Then why Nate. What makes him so special?” Olly said concerned for his friend. Killing for the country, killing for protecting or self-defense and even killing in revenge was something normal for the people of the kingdom but killing for money was not a normal job. It had even higher death rate and also affected the mental health as well.
People wouldn’t be human when they start to trade the life of others for money. “Nate ability is both good for killing people from up close and from distance and it pays well. I just want his abilities to be utilized at its maximum that’s all.” Baldy said in cold voice.
Baldy had already tested the abilities of the kids beforehand and knew what they could do. Olly could enhance his skin to be as hard as earth and increase his physical strength with his magic. He was suited to be a warrior with big weapons like an ax or big sword. Nadia and John were internal caster as well and could change there body to be like air or water increasing there agility and speed.
There were immune to physical attacks as they could turn their body into air or water according to their attribute. Their abilities were also suitable for assassination but there were not mentally ready for it. Maybe once they got some blood in there hand they could transfer.
But Nate was different, the weapon he summoned “gun” as he called to good to be used as a normal weapon. It was fast and precise up to the certain distance and even he was not able to dodge the projectile it threw at him. He summoned his weapon so there was no need for him to hide his weapons in his body which meant he had an arsenal of weapon to choose from and he could take them anywhere he wanted without being detected.
He was perfect for assassination and assassination paid more than their usual jobs. If Nate was trained in assassination then he could become the number one in the guild without a doubt. In Baldy’s eyes, Nate was a rare gem with a very rare talent and ability.
