“It’s nearly out.”
Arth waved his wand and levitated the egg onto the table.
Funny clicks started to come out of the egg as steadily widening cracks appeared all over. They all drew their chairs up to the table and watched with bated breath. All at once there was a scraping noise and the egg split open.
The baby dragon flopped onto the table. It was the most beautiful thing Arth had ever seen.
It’s black scales glimmered in the firelight. Its spiny wings were huge compared to its jet like body, it had a long snout with wide nostrils, the little stubs of horns and bulging, glimmering orange eyes. It sneezed. A couple of adorable sparks flew out of its snout.
“Isn’t he beautiful?” Hagrid murmured.
“Are you sure it’s a he?” Arth said gently picking up the dragon, “she has a vulva.”
“What’s a vulva?”
“A female dragon reproduction organ. It’s also found on snakes.”
Hagrid reached out a hand to stroke the dragon’s head. It snapped at his fingers, showing pointed fangs. “Bless him, look, he knows his mommy!”
“Arthur,” said Hermione, “how fast do Norwegian Ridgebacks grow, exactly?”
“It’ll grow three times his current length in about a week,” said Arth with a star stuck eyes, “isn’t it wonderful?”
“Wonderful? He’ll be bigger than Hagrid’s hut in about a month!”
“Yeah, do you reckon I could become friends with the dragon by then? You think I could ride her when she becomes an a.d.u.l.t?”
“. . . .”
Hagrid glanced at the clock and let out a yell. “Blimey there, it’s almost time for dinner. Get out of here you lot.”
“Hagrid, I’ll be back after dinner.”
“See yer then Arthur.”
“See ya.”
For the next few days, any spare time Arth had, he would spend it in Hagrid’s but taking care of the Norwegian Ridgeback who they had decided to call Noa.
“Hagrid, Noa is so adorable isn’t she? Ah, she lit your walls on fire Hagrid. Ooh, it’s such a pretty color. Such a shame I have to put it out- aguamenti.”
“Hagrid, Noa bit me. What an adorable little thing. Her teeth must be itchy. Should we get her a toy?”
The only thing that Arth was sad about was that Noa and Corvus didn’t get along together. Corvus had appeared once while Arth was holding Noa in his arms, causing Noa to think that Corvus was her food.
They would scramble around the hut, like a cat and mouse, with Noa happily chasing Corvus while spitting out fire and Corvus who would teleport every time Noa came within a certain distance.
Arth was going to split the two up when he saw a startling scene. Somehow, the situation had reversed and Corvus ended up chasing Noa. Just exactly what was Corvus?
The bite that Noa had given him turned green, which most likely came from the poison in her fangs forcing Arth to visit Madam Pomfrey.
Approximately a month later Noa had grown to about the size of a small car and Arth and Hagrid were starting to get worried.
“Hagrid, I think we have a problem.”
“Blimey, I think so too. Noa is getting quiet big isn’t she? We should give her more room to play around in her yer reckon?”
“We should teach her how to hunt as well. I think that the days of feeding Noa chickens is over. She is going to start needing more food. I saw a couple of wild goats around the forest. She’ll be able to feed herself once she learns how to hunt.”
Arth glanced at the clock and sighed. “See you later Hagrid. I have to go first. It’s almost time for curfew and I have to do something tonight.”
“See yer tomorrow Arth. Don’t be getting into trouble. Don’t want to lose me partner.”
Arth waved goodbye and made his way to the castle as the sun started to set, casting a warm glow on his entire surroundings. He climbed up the stair case that led to the Ravenclaw Common rooms.
“When does a rooster thrice cry?”
“When it’s time for the earth, hell, and heaven to die.”
“Correct.”
Arth opened the door and walked into his room, nodding at a couple of older students who waved at him from the tables.
When he entered his room, Arth made sure that the door was locked before drawing open the curtains. The sun had finished setting and the stars peaked out from the clouds showering him with specks of light. The moon was nowhere to be seen.
Arth took out the Book or Night and flipped to the second page and waited. When it was about midnight, the book started to glow as a new set of silvery words appeared onto the black pages.
-by now you have probably figured out what the price is. I’m sorry to say it but it can not be taken away. Only reduced.
-if you seek to limit its effect, then you must master the essence of the spell. To do that, you just become invisible. True invisibility. An invisibility that will cause death to forget your existence.
-how does one become invisible? Open your mind, and let me in. You have only scratched the surface of what dances around during the Night.
